1. Introduction

This design note contains the design of uplift resisting arrangement of 103.5m steel open web
through type superstructure. Total uplift force for bearing under seismic load condition has been
furnished in bearing load calculation (Refer Design Note No. 9293/E/DN-164-108, DN-130-109,
9372/E/DN-53-106 & DN-44-108). It has been decided by the client that maximum vertical upward load
to be carried by bearing shall be 1000 kN for 103.5 m span & 1100 kN for 69 m span & balance part of
the force shall be carried by a separate device to be designed (Refer NF Railway letter no.W/60/Con/J-
IMB (Br. No. 164)/2014/41 dated 7/10/2016).
Accordingly a device has been designed & detailed in such a way so that the uplift of the
superstructure can be resisted by a portal structure developing vertical downward reaction at the
jacking point of cross girder whenever there is a tendency of uplift of the superstructure during seismic.
As the cross girder is already designed for an equivalent amount of static force the design of the cross
girder will remain unchanged. The portal support has been taken from the pier cap & longitudinal
arrester. The design note furnished the detailed design of the portal beam, column, connection of the
beam & column, connection of the column base & base plate including the calculated the force to be
resisted for the uplift.
