What do you think is the general idea of the text? How did you get your answer?

__________________________________________________________________________________
PETS | 6

1.3.2 What is skimming?

SKIMMING
When we read a newspaper, sometimes we dont really read what is in it.
Instead, we out read really, really fast, because we just want to know what
the main thing the news item contains is. We call this reading skill as
skimming.

1.3.3 Lets look at this text.

Youd be surprised how many online groups there are for alumni. I belong to two groups on Facebook.
One is an alumni group for people from my secondary school who are now living in Johor Bahru and
the other group is for people who were alumni of University Pendidikan Sultan Idris. Both of these
groups get together once in two weeks, or once a month. We would usually to go to a caf or maybe
have a picnic. This would give us a lot of chance to catch up with each other.

1. For this text, what could be the general idea?

______________________________________________________________________________

You can meet new friends in your university by joining a club or an association. This is the easiest and
most effective way to meet new people who would share similar interest with you. Don't be afraid of
going by yourself. That is the only way you can get to know people in a more personal manner. During
the first weeks everyone is going to the clubs by themselves. If you joined late, dont be worried. The
people in most groups will be very happy to show you around. You could try a group which activities
are related to your interests, or you could join clubs that to learn about new interests or activities..

1.4 Nouns?

Count nouns:
Things that are countable, for example books,
bottles and cars.
Non-count nouns:
Things that cannot be counted, like air, sand, water
and oil.

all around us. The examples would be books, Singular nouns
cakes, cat, water and air.

Nouns can be put in different categories.
Nouns can be categorised at count and non-count
nouns. Plural nouns

nouns. place, idea.
They can also be grouped as common and proper

SINGULAR PLURAL COMMON PROPER

Car Cars Laptop Kulai

.. .. ..
PETS | 8

1.4.2 Underline the common nouns and proper nouns in the text below.

Making friends can be difficult. Here is one of the strategies to try, if youre eager to make

friends but finding it tough:

Just as Woody Allen said that Eighty percent of success is showing up, a big part of friendship

is showing up. Whenever you have the chance to see other people, take it. Go to the party.

Stop by someones desk. Make the effort. I'm a big believer in the power of online tools

like Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ to help sustain relationships, but nothing can replace a

face-to-face meeting.

Also, the mere exposure effect describes the fact that repeated exposure makes you like

someone better and makes that person like you better, too. Youre much more likely to

become friends with someone if you see him or her often. Ive seen this happen over and over

in my life. Ive become close to unlikely people, just because circumstances put us in constant

contact.

2.3 How to Care for a Pet

2.3.1 Wilmas brother, Harris has just gotten a pet cat. He is talking to the vet, Dr. George, on how to
care for a cat. Take note of the important points.

Dr. George: So, Harris, you have just got a pet cat, and his name is Bujibu, correct?
Harris: Yes, Dr. George. Ive never had a pet cat before, so I need some advice from you.
Anyway, is Bujibu healthy?
Dr. George: Sure. I am more than happy to help. Bujibu is a really healthy cat. Now, what would
you like to know?
Harris: How often should I bring the cat to the vet, to get his vaccinations?
Dr. George: It depends on the age of the cat. Since your cat is an adult, you should give it a
vaccination once a year.
Harris: What about its required nutrition? Food? Water?
Dr. George: Most importantly, make sure fresh, clean water is available at all time. Cats require
taurine, an essential amino acid, for heart and eye health. The food you choose
should be balanced for the life stage of your cat or kitten. Properly balanced foods
will contain taurine.
Harris: Do I need to provide anything special for my cat?
Dr. George: Well, if your cat is an indoor cat, provide enough litter boxes around the house. Or
you could try to toilet-train you cat. Remember, cats need to scratch! When a cat
scratches, the old outer nail sheath is pulled off and the sharp, smooth claws
underneath are exposed. So provide your cat with a sturdy scratch post.
Harris: Okay, I will provide one for my cat. Ive a cat bed, some interactive toys and a food
and water bowl for him. But Ill try to get more items for him. Thank you for the
advice, Dr. George.
Dr. George: You are most welcomed. Dont forget to see Miss Sim to set an appointment to get
your cat vaccinated again next year.
Harris: Sure. Thanks again, Dr. Bye!

2.3.2 Harris is at home now. He is telling his mom what they need to do to care for their pet cat.

2.6 Skimming: Knowing the topic/main idea before reading

In order to really understand what is read, it is important for us to know the topic and also the main
idea. But what is a topic, and what is a main idea?

The topic of a selection is the subject matter. It is usually expressed in a short phrase.
The main idea of a selection is the complete statement about the topic that the writer is
making.

Read this text

Scratching is a normal part of cat behaviour. Cats do it for several reasons, like to keep their claws in good
condition and to tell other cats they are there before. The act of scratching actually helps cats to have healthy claws.
But sometimes this behaviour causes cat owners to be upset. The reason is scratching could cause the cat owners
furniture to be damaged.

The topic of this paragraph is scratching.

The main idea is Scratching is a normal part of cat behaviour.
KONSEP KESIHATAN AWAL KANAK-KANAK | 3

Look at the next text. Identify the topic and main idea of the paragraphs below:

Among the easiest pet to care for are canaries. They do not really need much room, so a small
sized apartment would be just fine for them. Canary owners do not have to fuss much over their
pet. Canaries do not mind if they have to live alone without other canaries, or be left alone at
home. The reason is they are solitary birds.

1. What would be the topic?

2. What is the main idea?

Lets try this one:

A rabbit kept as a pet would be a happy one when it is able to show its natural behaviour. As
rabbit owners, we can find ways to help them do this. They need to be able to jump around,
stretch and play, either by itself or with other rabbits or pets. Rabbits live together in the wild, so it
is very important to keep them in a pair or well-matched group. If they do not get this, rabbits are
likely to get very depressed. Make sure your pet rabbits are neutered. We have to do it even if
theyre in a same-sex group, because this will avoid them from fighting each other

Goldfish have rather good memories, and they are actually quite intelligent creatures. They can
identify shapes, colours and even sounds. Goldfish can even recognise individuals. They may
swim to the front of the tank and seem very happy when their owner appears. They would act the
same if the people who often feed them come near the aquarium. Goldfish may become less shy
if they frequently see people. If they are very used to seeing you, they might even allow you to
hand feed them.

2.7 Simple Sentences

A linking verb is used to express a state of being. They link the subject with the predicate that
describes the subject or renames the subject. List of the linking verbs are as shown below:

(a) am, is, are, was, were, being, been

Linking verbs
(b) remain, appear, become, grow, look, seem, smell, sound, stay,
taste, turn feel,

Example:
Mr. Abu is a teacher.
The cats are Persian cats.
The monkeys remain quiet after feeding time.
He looks old for his age.
Note: To see if the linking verb in group (b) is used correctly, replace it with the correct verb-to-be. If the
sentence makes sense and almost have the same meaning, they are linking verbs.
KONSEP KESIHATAN AWAL KANAK-KANAK | 5

Example:

(i) Paul appears sleepy.

(ii) Paul appears is sleepy.

Both sentences (i) and (ii) have the same meaning.

Sometimes we would want to tell more about a person or thing. This can be done by using a
simple sentence, but we insert the subject complement. A subject complement is a word or a
group of words that describes or renames the subject. Subject complement must come after the
linking verb.

Mr. Abu is a teacher. (a teacher describes about Mr. Abu)

The cats are Persian cats. (Persian cats describes about the cats)
The monkeys remain quiet after feeding time. (quiet after feeding time explains about the monkeys)
He looks old for his age. (old for his age tells about the person)

2.7.1 Try to write five simple sentences with the subject complement.
1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Sometimes we want to make the sentence longer. To do so, we can extend the sentence by adding
more words. Wh- questions can be used to help us provide more information to the sentence.

Example:
He smiles. (This is a complete sentence.)
He smiles happily. (How does he smile? Happily.)

We stood.
We stood in the bush. (Where did we stand? In the bush.)

3.6 Describing Routines

3.6.1 Read the closure of Damias Diary Entry and help her to complete the diary with Things to do for
tomorrow.

We had so much fun talking and reminiscing

our school days at the restaurant just now. I am
going to miss John so much. He is one of its
kind. He loves to joke around and I will be
laughing most of the time when I am with him.
He cried just now when we decided to sing a
song for him. He even said that we are his best
friends. I hope he would realize that he is our
best friend too.

Anyway, tomorrow I need to wake up early

because I promise mother that I would
accompany her to the market. I shall bring
some cat food too, so that I can feed the stray
cats. In the afternoon I need to prepare the
forms needed for my registration at USM next
week. I cant wait for tomorrows dinner as
father told me that my grandmom will be
joining us! Till then, Goodnight, Mr. Diary.

4.5 Online Shopping

LETS GO SHOPPING | 10

Read this text and answer the following questions

Online shopping allows you to shop from any vendors, at anytime, anywhere in the world. You can
comfortably shop while having coffee, or even on the bed before going to sleep in your pyjamas!
Virtual window shopping enables all users to shop at their own leisure. Besides, you no longer
have to get dress, or even get into your car, only if the traffic is smooth. For commuters, there is
no need for you to beat the hassle of lining up into the bus or train just to get the best deal! You
can simply compare prices from various shopping websites or social media accounts before
making the purchases. Isnt that convenient? Furthermore, you can also avoid crowds especially
during festive seasons. These are the perfect time for the retailers to organize massive sales and
gain the revenue. Finding a parking is already a problem for some, it tends to make people to
hurry or rush and can cause people to be frustrated when they are stuck in a long queue before
paying. Other than that, you can also avoid from spending more especially on dining, a cup of
coffee or ice cream when you are out. Lets not forget impulse buys, especially if you are in a
mall where there are numerous vendors with great sales inviting you for another shopping spree!

While online shopping seems to take shopping experience to a new level, not all deals are as
great as they seem at first glance. While the base price for an online item might look lower than
the store price, you also have to factor in the cost of shipping. Though some companies offer free
flat rate shipping, it still may come at a cost. For instance, a clothing store may offer free shipping
but at a minimum of a RM75 purchase. Aside from the shipping, there is another problem, waiting!
Remember you are not the only customer, there could be hundreds or even thousands
(depending on the item you buy) who are waiting for the things you pay for at your doorsteps. It is
best to check the companys website shipping policy before you click on the purchase icon. If you
need something urgently, it is advisable to just get it the traditional way. Last but not least, if an
item comes damaged or not as described, you will want to return the item or be refunded of your
money. Depending on where you purchased your item, there can be different policies for refunds
and returns; this process is tedious and is prolonged since you would have to ship back the item
and wait on the seller to refund your payment.

4.5.1 Match the word or phrases with the meaning.

Commuters to shop excessively

Shopping spree buying something without

Impulsive buys standard rate for shipping cost

Flat rate a person who travels some distance

on a regular basis.

6.5 Strange Hobbies!

Read the passage and answer all questions that follow.

Coin collecting? Reading sci-fi novels? Taking long walks? Crochet?

Whatever your hobbies are, we bet they're not as bizarre as these.

Most of us hate that terrifying question: "What are your hobbies?"

Perhaps you're part of a sports team, go to the gym, enjoying reading,

or knit in your spare time?

Here we have a collection of some of the most bizarre interests from all over the globe,
by Gifts.co.uk

1. Toy Voyaging, Worldwide

The basis of this is to send your toys off on a potentially world-wide adventure. The
website, ToyVoyagers, lets you choose a temporary home for your toy, wherever you
please around the world, and off they go. You can use the travel log to write to
your toy, as well as send and receive pictures from them. Once you want them back,
you just contact your toy's hosts and ask them to return them to their rightful
owner.

2. Competitive Dog Grooming, China

This, as you might imagine, involves grooming your dog in the most eccentric way
you can. While this hobby takes a lot of time, if you're successful enough, you can
win up to $30,000 from a single event.

3. Mooing, USA

In Wisconsin, USA, a competition takes place in which competitors must do their

best impression of a cow. The latest winner was a ten-year-old boy named Austin,

who received $1,000, a cow print jacket, and a golden cow bell among other prizes.

4. Collecting In-Flight Sick Bags, Singapore

Believe it or not, websites are available for 'Baggists' to buy and trade any sick bags
they may or may not have found on aeroplanes. One of the original 'Baggists' is from
Singapore, and has now got an impressive collection of 388 bags from 186 airlines.

5. Soap Carving, Thailand

In Thailand, it's common to see hand-carved soap flowers sold at night markets. As a
hobby, soap-carving is viewed very highly and people often sell their creations as
souvenirs.

hometown. I celebrate Christmas! Christmas is celebrated end of the year, 25

December to be exact. It is celebrated by Christians in commemorating Jesus Christs

birth anniversary in Bethlehem. People do lots of preparations and decorations of the

Churches and houses few days before the event celebration. Christmas trees are the

icons where you can see everywhere whether in the street or inside the house.

Usually during Christmas, family and relatives are gathered somewhere. As for

my family, we always gather at my grandpas house in Warwick. My immediate family

would be the one who arrive there first, followed by my cousins. Its fun to be around

with my relatives because I dont see them often. A day before Christmas, the female

members would help to cook in the kitchen. We normally have Turkey and cakes too.

Since the children in my family love cookies, its a must on Christmas.

The male on the other hand would be playing cards, but dont get me wrong. We

also decorate the house. We put candles and ornaments on Christmas trees. On

Christmas Eve, we have dinner. The food is delicious. On the day of Christmas, most of

my family members go to Church. On this occasion, everybody wishes Merry Christmas

to each other. Special Christmas Carols are sung in churches and abbeys. Oh yes, people

put on new clothes and present gifts to each other.

8.5 The Lunar New Year

Read the text and answer the following questions.

1 Young Malaysian Chinese may find some Lunar New Year traditions difficult to observe.
Wearing new clothes, preferably in red, on the eve may be easy but other customs may need
effort, such as remembering to greet their relatives by their proper terms. And, bad words are
forbidden. Cleaning the house before New Years Day brings good luck but doing it on the
first day sweeps it away. Fish, chicken, duck or goose is eaten whole, denoting beginnings 5
and endings, in other words, completeness. These are among the customs young celebrants
must obey and some may feel that they have a lot more to deal with during this period
compared with Christmas or the Western New Year.

2 It is a common complaint among the older generation that young people do not take
10
the festivals time-honoured practices seriously. The connection between traditions and their
meanings progressively breaks as time passes and older relatives die. The fast- paced and
technologically-driven world we live in today makes it even more challenging for families to
keep traditions alive. This is not peculiar to Chinese communities here and elsewhere; it is
true in almost every society in the world. Some, especially the younger generation, believe
15
that traditions associated with major festivals and rituals are outdated or reflect a value
system that is not applicable today.

3 However, some mothers and grandmothers of Chinese families in Malaysia insist

on maintaining the multitude of festivities that make up the celebration despite the current
trying times. They take a few shortcuts, either by reducing quantity, postponing luxuries or 20
recycling decorations. They declare that abundance should not only be enjoyed on the eve of
the big day but throughout the year as well. However, some things are hard to give up.
Prayer rituals, New Years Eve reunion dinners and ang pow-giving figure prominently on the
must do list. Young families who live away from their parents also fear that prayer rituals
will disappear when their parents pass on.
25

4 Lunar New Year festivities in Malaysia and around the world are beginning to reflect
younger tastes. It has become fashionable to take family vacations overseas instead of
celebrating the event at home. Hotel buffet dinners and multi-course restaurant reunion
meals take the burden of preparing a full-blown meal away for many. And, the older

generation are more accepting of those in black designer clothes.

9.4 Zoo keepers in a zoo

Contextual clues are hints or clues that are given by the author to help
readers define a difficult or unusual word. The hint could be seen in the same
sentence, or it may be found in the sentence that follows, or even the
sentence before it.
I HOPE ID BE... | 7

9.4.1 Read this short essay.

Joseph works as a Zoo Keeper in Zoo Negara. He is attached to the Cat Walk Unit. Every
morning, the first thing that he has to do is to go around and check all the animals. He
administers medications if needed because he has to make sure that the animals are okay.
After that, he starts cleaning yards and preparing diets for the cats. He also
prepares enrichment items [toys and food treats used to help recreate an animals natural
habitat] for the animals before they go out for the day.

Abdul Rahman is a Zoo Keeper at both the Mammals World and Bear Complex in Zoo
Negara. He and his colleagues would go in and set up the outdoor yards in the morning
before they let the animals out. They would put food out into the different parts of the
habitat, and this is very important to do. They know they need to encourage the animals to
search for the food and stimulate their natural instincts. They try to keep it as close to
nature as possible. The animals need to exercise their natural behaviours of going out and
sniffing out their food. Even though the animals spend their time in the same enclosure
every night, they can still feel that they are in a brand new habitat. This is because the
zookeepers change the structures of the logs or put different enrichment toys into the stalls
daily. This is important to recreate the animals natural habitat.

What is the text about? _______________________________________________________________

There are several words that we are not familiar with. Sometimes, a word may have several different
meanings, and we need to know which is the one intended by the author. A good reader would not
immediately refer to the dictionary to see the meaning of the difficult word. Instead, it would be better if
we could guess the meaning of the words, based on the information that we can find in the text.

9.4.2 The words in bold are words that may be new to us. Select the correct answer for each
question.

1. He administers medications if needed because he has to make sure that the animals are okay.

In this sentence, the word administers means

A. gives
B. spreads
C. conducts

2. He also prepares enrichment items [toys and food treats used to help recreate an animals natural

9.5 Writing a story

9.5.1 What is a narrative essay?

When you write a narrative essay, you are actually writing a story. A good narrative essay focuses on
one very important idea, that usually resolves a conflict or problem, and the character may display
some changes by the end of the story. A good narrative essay would be able to affect the readers
feelings when he reads it.

There are several types of narrative essay, like anecdotal, experiential and personal. However, let us
focus on one, which is the personal narrative essay.

This is an example of a short personal narrative essay.

It was when I followed my mother to work that day. She was a pre-school teacher in my hometown.
When I saw how the kids really adored her, I realised what a big impact she is making to them. They
really looked at her like their mother. When it was story-telling time, they listened intently. I then
realised what I want to be! I want to be a teacher like my mother! She supported my decision in taking
the Diploma in Early Childhood Education. Never in one day have I ever regretted my decision. Now I
have graduated, I am currently working in the same pre-school as my mother did. The satisfaction that
I get from my work is unbelievable. I never think of me being a teacher as a work, an occupation. Its
more of part of my life, things that I dont mind doing every single day.

9.5.2 Now, try to write one story about yourself. To help you with what to write, these questions might
be able to guide you.

What made you want to be a pre-school teacher?

What made you decide to study in the Diploma in Early Childhood Education?
Where do you plan to work?
Do you plan to further your studies after completing your diploma? Why?
What are the satisfaction that you have when you work as a pre-school teacher?

The sentences that are written in the Present Progressive Tense can be in positive, negative or in a
question form.

Positive Negative Question

I / he / she / it I am eating. I am not eating. Am I eating?

Paraphrasing is actually easy. You just have to take what you have heard or read, and put it in
your own words. To do so, you need to change a few words. Sometimes, you can change the
sentence from active form to passive form, but dont forget to change a few words! Keep in mind
that you have to maintain the original meaning the writer wants to tell you when you paraphrase. If
you are able to do so, you may have produced a good paraphrased sentence.

10.1.3 Lets try this exercise. These sentences are paraphrased version of the sentences that you will
hear after this. Rearrange each of the sentences after the original sentence has been played twice.

happened in the past.

You / we / they You were eating. You were not eating. Were you eating?

There are several use of the past progressive tense, as stated below:
INSPIRATIONAL FIGURES | 12

To tell about an action that was happening during a certain time in the past

Example:

Where were you at 7 am yesterday? I was going to school.

At 12 noon last Sunday, Billy and Sarah were cooking lunch for the kids.

Most of the time, we would use the past progressive tense with the simple past tense. This
happens when we want to explain about an action (in simple past tense) that interrupts a
progressing action (in past progressive tense). The past progressive tells about a longer action
or situation and the simple past tense tells about the action or something that happened.

Example:

When Zahra woke up this morning, it was raining very hard.

Hafza and Kamarul were walking home together when they saw two robbers ran out from the
bank.

Generally, the act described by the simple past tense disrupts the situation that is described by
the past progressive tense.

Sivagamy fell down while she was cycling to class.

Lai was reading her book when the telephone rang.
