Seminar Series on Selected Topics in Electrical and Electronic Engineering2017

Venue: Billings Room

DATE: Thursday, 12 Oct 2017
TIME: 10:00 - 11:00AM

Abstract
The demand for intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) in SMART Grid applications is continuously grow-
ing. The communication method and media for these devices is clearly defined in most parts of the
world using internationally recognized standards. The functionality of these IEDs is typically fixed.
However, the demand for distributed process control devices with a user programming interface is al-
so growing. The past two decades have shown how the electrical utility industry developed from de-
ploying propriety technology owned by individual companies to open standards technology applied by
most vendors worldwide. These days newly developed smart grid systems demand even more com-
munication interfaces linking the traditional utility communication network safely into the World Wide
Web, cloud services and the Industry 4.0 industry. Any new communication link requires careful plan-
ning regarding the accessibility of user data, secured communication and the implementation of safety
barriers in smart grid IED node. The historical path from the beginning of electrical grid management
to todays challenges of our modern IT communication environment will be presented and discussed
in this session.
