Create a MSC.Nastran input file directly or by using
MSC.Patran.
Run the analysis using MSC.Nastran.
Review results.
Model Description:
Below is a finite element representation of the truss structure shown
on page 1-1. The nodal coordinates provided are defined in the
Global cartesian coordinate system (MSC.Nastran Basic system).
The structure is comprised of truss segments connected by smooth
pins such that each segment is either in tension or compression. The
structure has a pinned support at Grid Point 1 and is supported by a
roller at Grid Point 7. Point forces are applied at Grid Points 2, 4, and
6. In addition, out of plane translations and all rotations shall be
constrained for all Grids.
HINT: DOF 3456 for Grid 1 through 7 can be constrained by
using the permanent single point constraint option in the
GRID entry.

Objectives:
Define a set of material properties using the beam
library.
Perform a static analysis of a truss under 3 separate
loading conditions.
Review results.
Model Description:
Below is a finite element representation of the truss structure shown on
page 2-1. The nodal coordinates provided are defined in the Global
Cartesian Coordinate System (MSC.Nastran Basic system).
The roof frame shown in the attached figure consists of eleven wood and
steel members. The wood members, have uniform cross section
properties and act only as tension and compression members (See page
2-5 for location). The steel members, are bars that are capable of
withstanding tension, compression, shear, and loads in the plane of the
frame (See page 2-5 for location). The section properties for the steel
members are supplied as problem data. All the steel members are
welded end to end, however, the wood members are pinned end to end.
The frame is supported by pinned connections in the horizontal and
vertical directions at Grid Point 1 and in the vertical direction at Grid
Point 7. In addition, all Grid Points have fixed out of plane translations
and have constrained out of plane rotations.
HINT: DOF 345 for grid 1 through 7 can be constrained by using the
permanent single point constraint option in the GRID entry.

Objectives:
Create a MSC.Nastran analysis model comprised of
CQUAD4 & CBAR elements.
Prepare a MSC.Nastran input file for a Linear Static
analysis.
Visualize analysis results.
Model Description:
Below is a finite element representation of the stiffened plate shown
on page 3-1. The plate is 0.1 inches thick; therefore thin-shell theory
applies. I-beam stiffeners are mounted as shown. The structure has
pin supports on its four corners and a uniform pressure of 0.5 psi is
applied to the surface of the plate (See Figure 3.3). Table 3.1
contains all the necessary values to define the material and property
of the stiffened plate.
HINT: Because the centroidal axes of the stiffeners do not coincide
with the mid-plane of the plate, you will need to account for
this when you define the element properties for the
stiffeners.

Objectives:
Idealize the tube with QUAD4 elements.
Use RBAR elements to model a rigid end.
Produce a Nastran input file that represents the cylinder.
Submit the file for analysis in MSC.Natran.
Find the displacement vectors.
Model Description:
The goal of this example is to maintain a circular cross section at the
rigid end of the tube, (using RBAR elements), while applying a torque
of 6000 in.lbs about the z-axis of the tube.
Below is a Finite Element representation of the tube. One end of the
tube is considered rigid, and the other end is fixed in all translational and
rotational degrees of freedom. Table 4.1 contains all the necessary
parameters to construct the input file.

Objectives:
Idealize a rigid end using RBE2 elements.
Define a concentrated mass, to represent the weight of the
rigid enclosure (CONM2).
Model Description:
The goal of this example is to maintain a circular cross section at the
rigid end of the tube, (using a RBE2 element), while applying a
gravitational force of 2.7g in the z-direction.
Additionally, a concentrated mass needs to be defined to represent the
weight of the rigid enclosure. It is very important to account for all the
weight contribution since inertial loading is used in this problem.
Below is a Finite Element representation of the tube. One end of the
tube is considered rigid, and the other end is fixed in all translational and
rotational degrees of freedom. Table 5.1 contains all the necessary
parameters to construct the input file.

Modal Analysis of a
Circular Plate
Objectives:
Reduce the model to a 30 degree section and use symmetric
boundary conditions.
Produce a Nastran input file.
Model Description:
For this example, use Lanczos method to find the first three natural
frequencies and mode shapes of a circular plate that is fully clamped
around the edge. In addition, model the circular plate by using a 30
degree section to reduce the size of the model. Be certain to incorporate
all the necessary symmetric boundary conditions to ensure the accuracy
of the analysis.
Below is a finite element representation of a 30o section of the circular
plate. It also contains the geometric dimensions and boundary
constraints. Table 6.1 contains the necessary parameters to construct the
input file (or the model if you are a MSC.Patran user).

Objectives
Produce a Nastran input file.
Submit the file for analysis in MSC.Nastran.
Find the first five natural modes of the plate.
Model Description:
For this example, find the unit critical compressive stress of a flat
rectangular plate. This plate is under equal uniform compression of 100
psi on two opposite edges. All edges are simply supported.
In addition, the applied edge compression shall be idealized as nodal
forces for this example. See Page 7-5 for helpful hints.
Below is a Finite Element representation of the flat plate. It also contains
the geometric dimensions and the loads and boundary constraints. Table
7.1 contains the necessary parameters to construct the input file.

Objectives:
Using the model from Workshop 2, create two additional
load cases for the truss using a combination of three
previous load cases on a restart run.
Restart an existing static analysis of a truss under these
loading conditions.
Review results.
Model Description:
This problem will be a restart of Problem 2. The solution will consist of
two subcoms that will combine the results of the previous run.
The first subcom will be the sum of the first three subcases.
The second subcom will be the sum of the following:
(1.0 x subcase 1) + (2.0 x subcase 2) + (1.5 x subcase 3)
For each of the two combination cases -ONLY-, find the displacements
and reaction forces for all grid locations, the element forces, stresses and
margins of safety for all elements.

Model Description:
Below is a finite element representation of the truss structure shown
on page C-1. The nodal coordinates provided are defined in the
MSC.Nastran Basic system.
HINT: DOF 3456 for Grid 1 through 7 can be constrained by
using the permanent single point constraint option in the
GRID entry.

APPENDIX D
Objectives:
Create a MSC.Nastran analysis model comprised of
CQUAD4 & CBAR elements.
Prepare a MSC.Nastran input file for a Linear Static
analysis.
Visualize analysis results.
Model Description:
Below is a finite element representation of the stiffened plate shown
on page D-1. The plate is 2.54 mm thick; therefore thin-shell theory
applies. I-beam stiffeners are mounted as shown. The structure has
pin supports on its four corners and a uniform pressure of 3447 Pa is
applied to the surface of the plate (See Figure D.3). Table 2.1
contains all the necessary values to define the material and property
of the stiffened plate.
HINT: Because the centroidal axes of the stiffeners do not coincide
with the mid-plane of the plate, you will need to account for
this when you define the element properties for the
stiffeners.

One end of the tube
is considered rigid, and the other end is fixed in all translational and
rotational degrees of freedom. Table E.1 contains all the necessary
parameters to construct the input file

Model Description:
The goal of this example is to examine the effect of rigid and
interpolation constraint elements. The rigid element, RBE2, will
maintain a circular cross section at the rigid end of the tube, while
the interpolation constraint elements, RBE3, are used to distribute
either loading or mass.

Modal Analysis of a
Circular Plate (SI)
Table G.1 contains the necessary parameters to construct the
input file.

Find the first five natural modes of the plate.
Model Description:
For this example, find the unit critical compressive stress of a flat
rectangular plate. This plate is under equal uniform compression of
6.89E+5 Pa on two opposite edges. All edges are simply supported.
In addition, the applied edge compression shall be idealized as nodal
forces for this example. See Page H-4 for helpful hints.
