Indian Institute of Technology Madras is one among the foremost institutes of national
importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research. In 1956, the German
Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in
engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the
establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959.

The Institute was formally inaugurated in 1959 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister
for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. The IIT system has sixteen Institutes of Technology.
The first of these to be instituted are at Kharagpur (estb. 1951), Mumbai (estb. 1958), Chennai
(estb. 1959), Kanpur (estb. 1959), Delhi (estb. 1961), Guwahati (estb. 1994) and Roorkee (estb.
1847, joined IITs in 2001). IIT Madras is a residential institute with nearly 550 faculty, 8000
students and 1250 administrative & supporting staff and is a self-contained campus located in a
beautiful wooded land of about 250 hectares. It has established itself as a premier centre for
teaching, research and industrial consultancy in the country.

The Institute has sixteen academic departments and a few advanced research centres in
various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organized in a
unique pattern of functioning. A faculty of international repute, a brilliant student community,

Digital Transformation with Digital Twins

Over the past few decades, dramatic improvements in communication and computing
technologies have driven the growth of consumer internet which has improved efficiencies,
increased customer base and created new business models in many industries including retail,
banking, hospitality, and transportation. Newer technologies such as additive manufacturing,
sensing technologies, artificial intelligence are changing our lives in ways we did not anticipate.
A confluence of these technologies is rapidly changing the landscape of what is possible in
manufacturing systems and asset health monitoring. This Industrial internet is going to have a big
impact on heavy industries such as power, water, airlines, manufacturing, oil and gas, etc. by
driving new outcomes and efficiencies in the industries. For example, 1% fuel saving in airline
industry today is worth $30B over the next 15 years in the industry.
This talk will focus on Digital Twin technologies GE is driving for Digital Transformation
of industries to improve efficiencies of industrial assets by bringing together sensing, monitoring,
control, prognostics and optimization. Digital Twins are personalized learning models of different
assets that assist in improved decision making related to maintenance and operations of these
assets. For example, Digital Twins models of turbine system in GE90 engine are used to optimize
maintenance saving tens of millions of dollars in unnecessary overhauls. In rail, Digital Twin
models of locomotives enable customers to minimize fuel consumption and emissions by
optimizing driving profile. In manufacturing, Digital Thread and Digital Twins are being
connected to reduce cycle time and improve manufacturing productivity.

Vyomabout Micro

V.K.Jain and J.RamkumarMachining
Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kanpur

The principle of electrochemical dissolution is known to us by Michael Faraday since 1834

which was first used for machining of metals in 1929 and later got commercialized in 1959 by Anocut
engineering company, USA. Non-contact and High material removal rate achieved through ECM
process making it a potent for batch and mass production of parts/features. Ever then, researchers
around the globe have developed different variants (Electro stream drilling, Wire electrochemical
machining, Shaped tube electro machining (STEM), Electrochemical turning etc.) and hybridizations
(Electrochemical grinding(ECG), Electrochemical spark machining(ECSM), Electrochemical
drilling(ECD) etc.) to this process. Transition from macro to micro electrochemical machining
necessitates the understanding of various underlying phenomenon occurring during metal dissolution
(generation of passivation layer, polarization of electrodes, double layer capacitance etc). A clear
demarcation between the working range of process parameters and its parameter interaction while
transiting from macro to micro domain is observed. This makes the process unique and interesting.
A comparative study is carried out between electrochemical micromachining and other
micromachining processes so as to acknowledge its advantages in critical areas of application. Lastly,
we would like to present the ongoing research work in the domain of ECMM at IIT Kanpur.
Dr. Sathyan Subbiah
Associate Professor
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Indian Institute Of Technology, Madras

Dr. Sathyan is a BTech alumni of IIT Madras (97 batch, ME), and obtained his MS in 2000
from University of Illinois Urbana Champaign and PhD in 2006 from Georgia Tech. He worked
for three years in the automotive industry between his MS and PhD. He has about 7 years of
experience as faculty at NTU Singapore before he joined IIT Madras in 2014.

Unusual Applications of Machining

Machining as a way to shape raw material in the form of turning, milling, drilling etc.. is
well known for centuries. Less well known are unusual applications of machining that people have
thought about, tested and reported either in the form for academic publications or patents. Some
of these have been adopted for practical use, while others have not yet found use and yet still
induce awe when we read about them. This talk will introduce the audience to these strange
applications and the people who thought about them. The author himself has attempted a few
unusual applications of the machining process which will also be presented.

India has had a rich tradition of learning and honouring the learned. It is this richness of
learning that has kept alive a thriving civilization, with its uniformities and diversities in various
regions, for many millennia, despite various external and internal tumults.
This essay attempts to gain a glimpse of this learning tradition in the past, with specific reference
to the Tamil culture, and look at what learning means to us now. The essay goes on to seek answers
to some of the important questions about learning. How important are cultural continuity and
societal impact? How does learning happen? How does the larger world influence learning, and
vice versa? What are some of the approaches that can enhance learning and its impact?

transformed into Vehicle Research & Development Establishment (VRDE), Ahmednagar.
In 1965, when a decision was taken for manufacturing Vijayanta Tank, the Heavy Vehicles Factory
was set up at Avadi. To render R&D support to HVF, a detachment of VRDE was established as
a nucleus at Avadi. In 1969, a need was felt to set up an independent DRDO laboratory for handling
tasks relating to Armoured Fighting Vehicles, and accordingly, on 26 March 1975, the detachment
of VRDE Avadi was re-designated as Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment
(CVRDE).
