7.2StationBatteriesandBatteryChargers
7.2.1Scope
i.Onesetof110volts,DCsystemsconsistingofonebatterybankofminimum200AH
capacityandonebatterychargershallbeprovided.Thesystemwillbesuitableforthe
completerequirementsforcontrol,protectionandinterlocks,emergencyDCdrives,
emergencylighting,annunciationandfieldflashingetc.
ii.Twosetsof24voltsDCsystemconsistingofbatterybankandchargeraspartof
UPSsystemsuitableforSCADAsystem.(OptionalwithSCADAsystemonly)
Detailedsizing/selectioncalculationsshallbesuppliedandwillbesubjectto
Purchasersapproval.
ManualandDrawingsofBatteryChargershallbemadeavailabletothe
EmployerbytheContractor

7.2.2CodesandStandards

7.2.3ConstructionFeatures
ThebatteriesshallbeofNickelCadmiumandhighdischargetype.Eachbatteryshall
haveastaticbatterycharger,ratedtofullyrechargethebatteryfromacompletely
dischargedconditioninnotmorethanten(10)hoursinboostchargingmode.Each
batterychargershallbecapableoffloatchargingthetwobatterieswhilesupplyingthe
normalvoltageregulators.
(a)Manualselectionfacilityforbatterychargingmodei.e.whethertrickleorboost.
(b)Automaticandmanualcontrolofoutputvoltageandcurrent.Selectorswitch
shallbeprovidedforauto/manualselection.Autotomanualchangeovershall
notresultinanyharmfulsurges.
(c)Effectivecurrentlimitingfeatureandfiltersonbothinputandoutputto
minimiseharmonics,RFT,EMTetc.
(d)Whenonautomaticcontrolmodeduringtricklecharging,thechargervoltage
shallremainwithin1%ofsetvalueformaximumpermissiblevoltage,
frequencyandcombinedvoltageandfrequencyvariationonfeedingsystem
anddcloadvariationfromzerotofullload.
(e)DegreeofprotectionshallbeIP:42.
(f)Therectifiershallutilisediode/thyristorsandheatsinksratedtocarry200%of
theloadcurrentcontinuously.Temperatureofheatsinkshallnotbepermitted
toexceed85deg.Cdulyconsideringthemaximumchargerpanelinside
temperature.
(g)RectifierfuseandRCsurgesuppressor.
(h)Ripplecontenttobelimitedto1%peaktopeak.
(i)Allintercellconnectorsandterminalsshallbefullyinsulated/shrouded.
DCschemeshallprovideatleasttwofeedsthroughdiodesharingcriticalconsumers
e.g.allprotectionpanels/controlallcircuitbreakerstransformerandemergency
lighting,switchgearpanels,generatorexcitationsystem,generatoroilsealsystem,
etc.ThedetailsshallbesubjecttoEmployersapproval.
Batteriesandchargersshallbeconnectedtodcdistributionboard(DCDB)through
singlecorecablesforeachpole.ThemainHRCfusesonbatteryandchargeroutput
shallhavealarmcontacts.Thebatteryfuseshallbelocatedclosetobatteryinthe
batteryroomandshallbeeasilyaccessible.
TheDCsystemsshallbeunearthed,andrelaysshallbeprovidedforasensitiveearth

faultdetectionandannunciation.Thelow/highvoltagealarms,instrumentsfor
indicationofchargercurrentandvoltage,dcvoltage,batterycurrent,etc.shallalsobe
provided.
Batterieshavingcompletecellweightof50kgormoreshallbearrangedinsingletier.
Thebatterieswhichareinterconnectedtoserveasstandbytoeachothershallbe
located.
Onesetofvariablemetallicresistorandshuntsuitableforcarryingoutdischargetests
(5hourdischarge)onallbatteriesshallalsobesupplied.

Onecompletesetofallaccessoriesanddevicesrequiredformaintenanceandtesting
ofbatteriesshallbesuppliedforeachbatterybank.Eachsetincludeatleastthe
following:
a.Hydrometer2nos.
b.Setofhydrometersyringessuitablefortheventholesin2nos.
differentcells.
c.Thermometerformeasuringelectrolytetemperature5nos.
d.Specificgravitycorrectionchart2nos.
