have been partnering with
the Sherburne Soil & Water
Conservation District and
the U of M Minnesota Tree
Care Advocate Program on
a pilot program since 2014.
The program aids in in-
creasing local capacity by
working together to engage
citizens in community
forestry.
Volunteer Citizen
Pruners are trained in tree
identification, biology, and
pruning techniques. Tree
pruning requires not only
an understanding of how to
prune, but also an under-
standing of the trees biol-
ogy to make sure you
prevent the spread of cer-
tain diseases.
If you enjoy being out-
doors, love trees and your
community, this is an op-
portunity you need to check
out. No prior knowledge of
trees is necessary.
Training sessions have
been scheduled for March
and early April. The cost to
attend the 6 hours of train-
ing is $25, BUT special
funding is allowing the
SWCD to subsidize the
class this year. Attend for
only $5! Course material
will be taught by U of M
Urban Forestry Department
staff.
The class will be held
on Saturday, September
23rd from 9:00 am to 3:00

Sign-Up month, and Great River Regional
Library (GRRL) has joined forces with the
American Library Association and libraries
across the country to highlight the ways li-
brary cards change lives.
This year marks the 30th anniversary
of Library Card Sign-up Month, launched
in 1987 to encourage all people, particu-
larly children, to register for a library card.
Since then, thousands of public and
Libraries provide strong foundations
for children starting at the earliest stages of
development, and librarians are key players
in educating families on the link between
early literacy and future academic success.
GRRL branches offer a variety of pro-
grams year-round to stimulate an interest in
reading and learning. Preschool storytimes
expose young children to the joys of read-
ing, while homework and research assis-
tance for older children inspire strong
academic success and pave the way for suc-
