Question No.1 is compulsory. Out of the remaining SIX questions attempt
any FOUR.
All questions carry equal marks. The number of marks carried by a part of
a question is indicated against it.

Unless otherwise mentioned, symbols and notations have their usual


standard meanings.
Assume suitable data, if necessary and indicate the same clearly.

Neat sketches may be drawn, wherever required.


All parts and sub-parts of a question are to be attempted together in the
answer book.
Attempt of questions shall be counted in chronological order. Unless struck

(a) 215 litres of gasoline (specific gravity 0.82) flow per
second upwards in an inclined venturimeter fitted to a
300 mm diameter pipe. The venturimeter is inclined at 60
to the vertical and its 150 mm diameter throat is 1.2 m
from the entrance along its length. Pressure gauges
inserted to entrance and throat show pressures of 0.141
N/mm2 and 0.077 N/mm2 respectively. Calculate the
discharge coefficient of venturimeter.

and momentum correction factor. What are the least

(d) A rectangular footing 8 m by 4 m size carries a total load


of 600 kN. Newmarks solution for stresses below corner
of uniformly loaded rectangular areas may be used to
find the vertical stress below the footing. The following
table may be used to find influence coefficient (I) In this
Newmarks method.

e) A tank 1.5 m high stands on a trolley and is full of water.


It has an orifice of diameter 0.1 m at 0.3 m from the
bottom of the tank. If the orifice is suddenly opened, what
will be the propelling force on the trolley? Coefficient of
discharge of the orifice is 0.60.

(a) A 15 kW pump with 80% efficiency is discharging oil of
specific gravity 0.85 to the overhead tank as shown in
figure. If losses in the whole system are 1.75 m of flowing
fluid, find the discharge.

(b) Velocity distribution for laminar flow of real fluid in a


pipe is given as v = Vmax [1 (r2/R2)], where Vmax is
velocity at the centre of the pipe, R is pipe radius, and v is
velocity at radius r from the centre of the pipe. Determine
the momentum correction factor.

of 40 kN/m2. Determine the vertical stress at P which is 3
m below the ground surface. Use equivalent point load
method (in kN/m2). (Divide the footing into nine equal

(a) To what change in pressure a liquid of specific gravity

(a) What is the maximum value of H/d for floating cylinder
in water with stable equilibrium where H = height of the
cylinder d = diameter of cylinder.

(b) Water flows through a 0.8 m diameter pipe at the end of


which there is a reducer connecting to a 0.55 m diameter
pipe. If the gauge pressure at the entrance to the reducer is
400 kN/m2 and the velocity is 2 m/s, determine the
resultant thrust on the reducer, assuming that the frictional
loss of head in the reducer is 1 m.

shown in figure. Take w = 10 kN/m3 and draw active

(a) An elevated structure with a total weight of 6,000 kN is
supported on a tower with 4 legs. The legs rest on piers
located at the corners of a square 4 m on a side. What is
the vertical stress increment due to this loading at a point
7 m beneath the centre of the structure?

(b) A canal of 6 m depth having side slopes at 450 is proposed


to be constructed using a soil with u = 150, Cu = 18 kN/m2,
e = 1, G = 2.65. The w of water may be taken as
9.80 kN/m3. Taylors stability number method may be
used to analyse the slope. The stability numbers against
the mobilised friction angles are shown below.

For m = 100 ; Sn = 0.113
For m = 70 ; Sn = 0.126
When there is a sudden drawdown of water in the canal,

(c) A square footing located at a depth of 2 m from the


ground level carries a column load of 200 kN. The soil is
submerged having an effective unit weight of 10 kN/m3
and angle of shearing resistance of 30o. Find the size of
the footing using Terzaghis theorem if Fs = 3; for
= 30o; Nq = 10; N = 6.0

(a) The sub soil at a building site consists of medium sand
with = 18 kN/m3, C = 0, = 30o and water table at
the ground surface. A 3 m square footing is to be placed
at 2 m below the ground surface. Compute the safe
bearing capacity of footing. What will be the safe bearing
capacity if the water table goes down to 3.5 m below the
ground surface? For = 30o, N = 19.7, Nq = 20.3

(b) Explain about over burden correction, Dilatancy


correction and importance of N-value of SPT test in
soil exploration.

(c) In a two-dimensional incompressible flow, the fluid


velocity component are given by

Show that velocity potential exists and determine its form.
Also determine the related stream function.

(a) A group of nine piles, 14 m long and 300 mm in diameter,
is to be arranged in a square form in a clay soil with an
average unconfined compressive strength of 60 kN/m2.
Work out the centre to centre spacing of the piles for a
group efficiency factor of 1 and Adhesion factor is 0.90.
Neglecting bearing at the tip of the piles.

(b) 250 mm diameter, 8 m long piles are used as foundations


for a column in a uniform deposit of medium clay { qu =
100 kN/m2 }.
The spacing between the piles is 450 mm. There are 9
piles in the ground arranged in a square pattern. Calculate
the ultimate pile load capacity of the group. Adhesion
factor is 0.90.

(c) A vertical jet of water 8 cm in diameter leaving the nozzle,


with a 10 m/s velocity strikes a horizontal and movable
disc weighing 200 N. The jet is then deflected horizontally.
Determine the vertical distance y above the nozzle tip at
which the disc will be held in equilibrium.
