Israel announced plans for 3,000 new settler
units in the occupied West Bank, the fourth
such announcement in the less than two
weeks since US President Donald Trump took
office.
The former US administration of Barack
Obama despaired of Israels accelerating set-
tlement expansion and, in a sharp break with
longstanding policy, withheld its veto on a
critical UN Security Council resolution in its
final days, AFP wrote.
But since Trump took office with top aides
sympathetic to the settlement enterprise, Is-
rael has announced a string of new projects
that will add more than 6,000 units for Israeli
settlers.
According to a statement by Israel, 2,000 of
the units are ready to be put on the market,
while the rest are in various stages of plan-
ning.
Since the January 20 inauguration of
Trump, Israel has approved the construction
of 566 units in three settlement neighbor-
hoods of annexed East Beit-ul-Moqaddas and
5,502 more elsewhere in the occupied West
Bank.
On Thursday last week, Israeli officials
gave final approval for 153 settler units in
East Beit-ul-Moqaddas.
They had been frozen under pressure from
the Obama administration, which had warned
that settlements could derail the so-called
peace process.
Trump has pledged strong support for Is-

area of space technology during a ceremony attended by Presi-
dent Hassan Rouhani and other senior officials.
The Exhibition of Space Achievements was held in Tehran on
Wednesday to mark the ninth National Space Technology Day.
Also present at the event were Minister of Science, Research, and
Technology Mohammad Farhadi and Defense Minister Brigadier
General Hossein Dehqan.
During the ceremony, the domestically-designed Nahid 1 tel-
ecommunications satellite, and student-manufactured Cube satellite
were unveiled.
Nahid 1 has been manufactured at Irans Space Research
Center. Through its production, the country has sought to hone
its capabilities in building geosynchronous satellites. The solar-
powered satellite is designed to provide telecommunication and
imaging services.
Among other achievements put on display were the surveillance-
imaging Payam-e Amirkabir satellite, designed and built by Irans
Amirkabir University of Technology and Saman 1 orbital maneuver

France determined to
boost ties with Iran

The trip of French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault to Iran
can play an influential role in cementing bilateral ties.
Tehran-Paris ties were adversely impacted after the imposi-
tion of anti-Iran sanctions. However, the conclusion of a nu-
clear deal between the Islamic Republic and the P5+1 in 2015

2016 turned over a new leaf as the European nation decided to
provide a fresh impetus to mutual relations.
Presently, France as one of the powerful European nations,
and Iran as an influential country in the Middle East, can be
reliable partners in cultural, economic and political fields.
The enormous cultural capacities of the two nations can be
a driving force for boosting future cooperation.

Prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the first group of

French banks to help strengthen bilateral economic bonds.
Ayrault also held political talks with Iranian officials during
his trip. Irans influential role in the Middle East, in particular
after clinching the JCPOA, has pushed France to adopt a more
convergent approach toward Iran.
Terrorism has eclipsed the region over the past years. Eu-
ropean countries including France are reeling from the conse-
quences of the gloomy phenomenon.
As a result, France which pays special attention to develop-
ments in the Middle East in particular to Syria and Leba-
non is making efforts to enhance ties with Iran as a key
regional player.

and the new center equipped with the latest German
technology in the field is a state of the art center
with staff trained in Germany.
Efforts to upgrade Navys diving medicine start-
ed in 2003, but after anti-Iran sanctions the project
experienced some impediments. However, follow-
ing the directive by the Leader of the Islamic Revo-
lution for the naval force to be at its best in this field
of medicine, they mustered all their capacity to
open the most-befitting facility of the field in Iran.

ing a 2010 reform allowing asylum seekers to
work in Japan once their applications have been

Results from a new study are showing that children receive the
same beneficial effect from being active. Were talking about mod-

Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technol-
ogy (NTNU) and NTNU Social Research have followed hundreds of
children over four years to see if they could find a correlation between
physical activity and symptoms of depression.
Researchers examined just under 800 children when they were six
years old, and conducted follow-up examinations with about 700 of them
when they were eight and ten years old. Physical activity was measured
with accelerometers, which served as a kind of advanced pedometer, and
parents were interviewed about their childrens mental health.
Being active, getting sweaty and roughhousing offer more than
just physical health benefits. They also protect against depression,
said Tonje Zahl, a PhD candidate at NTNU. She is first author of the
article on the study findings, which was recently published in the Feb-
ruary 2017 issue of Pediatrics.
The work was conducted as part of Tidlig Trygg i Trondheim, a
multi-year study of child development and mental health.
Physically active six- and eight-year-olds showed fewer symptoms
of depression when they were examined two years later. Physical ac-
tivity thus seems to protect against the development of depression.
This is important to know, because it may suggest that physical
activity can be used to prevent and treat depression already in child-
hood, said Silje Steinsbekk, associate professor in NTNUs Depart-
ment of Psychology. Steinsbekk and Professor Lars Wichstrm are
Zahls mentors and coauthors.
Steinsbekk stressed that these results should now be tested in rand-
omized studies where researchers increase childrens physical activity
and examine whether those who participate in these measures have
fewer symptoms of depression over time than those who do not par-
ticipate.
We also studied whether children who have symptoms of depres-
sion are less physically active over time, but didnt find that to be the
case, she said.
Previous findings in adolescents and adults showed that sedentary
lifestyles like watching television and computer gaming are as-
sociated with depression, but the NTNU childrens study found no
correlation between depression and a sedentary lifestyle.
Depressive symptoms did not lead to greater inactivity and a seden-
tary lifestyle did not increase the risk of depression.
So the message to parents and health professionals is: Facilitate
physical activity, which means that children get a little sweaty and
breathless. Try a bike ride or outdoor play. Limiting childrens TV or
iPad screen time is not enough. Children need actual increased physi-
cal activity.
Montessori method teaches children
to manage their community
Rafe Cebeci, founder of the Istanbul Montessori Institute (ME), has
shared details of the Montessori education method at a seminar.
She said the Montessori method is an approach that places impor-
tance on the soul and social nature of people and the social, emotional,
cognitive and physical development of children, Daily Sabah wrote.
Cebeci started the seminar by talking about the method, developed
by Italian doctor Maria Montessori, which aims to improve the curi-
osity of children aged between three and six by nurturing them in an
educational environment. She talked about how the Montessori meth-
od first came to the region, saying that the education method, which
recalls traditional Turkish culture, first became a source of inspiration
in the Ottoman era. Research and work on the method intensified be-
tween 2002 and 2012, focusing on the pre-school period. Cebeci ex-
pressed her concerns that it is becoming a trend today and that some
are using it for financial gains.
This situation is used by some people to take financial advantage,
ignoring quality. However, the quality of class and teacher should be a
priority in this method, she stated.
The first six years of human life is the period when our brains de-
velop the fastest. If families and teachers support brain development
in the right way during this period, the child will be successful both in
educational and social life. They will be ready for life no matter where
they go or what they do in the future, said Cebeci. She added that chil-
dren should have concrete experiences until the age of six, an argument
which is supported by the Montessori method, which she also claims
supports both the cognitive and mental development of children.
Cebeci stated that the Montessori method aims to raise the child as
a polite and calm person. In Montessori classes, children learn how
to manage their own community. While the older children develop a
sense of love, compassion and leadership toward the young ones, the
younger students observe the older ones and learn how to learn from
them, she said.
Cebeci noted that a punishment and reward system is not imple-
mented in the method, which is known for its closeness to natural
human behavior. Instead, the system presupposes that we need to ap-
proach children in times of crisis and explain the reasons to them.
Cebeci also mentioned that there are misunderstandings in terms of
the approach to freedom in the Montessori method. Students learn that
their freedom is limited to other peoples freedom and they grow with
self-discipline in Montessori classes. A question-and-answer session
held after the seminar helped answer the question marks in partici-
pants minds, leading to a better understanding of the method.

dles of joy when a female jaguar gave birth to a pair of cubs.
Staff at Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown were surprised
to find that resident female Inka had given birth to two cubs three
months after being introduced to male Zean, UPI wrote.
Inka gave birth in the early morning hours of January 24, the
zoo said. The birth was unexpected, but our animal care team has
done everything in their power to make sure mom and cubs are safe
and comfortable.
Inka and Zean were first directly introduced in October 2016 after
they had previously only been able to view each other between the
fencing that separates their exhibit spaces.
The first day of their introduction was October 12. The chances
for a successful conception were slim for a couple of first-timers,
which is why the birth came as somewhat of a surprise, the zoo
said.
