Disconnect power cable before working on your computer.

1. Remove the computer cover from the Dell Precision R5500.

2. Remove the Cooling Shroud. Gently lift the shroud straight up and away from the system board.

3. Move the Front Chassis Assembly forward to gain access to the Memory Modules. Press down
on the two release tabs (marked as 1) and slide the front-chassis towards the front of the
computer (marked as 2).
4. Removing existing memory modules. Press down and out on the ejectors on each end of the
socket until the memory module pops out of the socket. CAUTION: The DIMMs are hot to the
touch for some time after the computer has been powered down. Allow the DIMMs to cool
before handling them. Handle the DIMMs by the card edges, and avoid touching the DIMM
components.

5. Installing memory modules. Locate the memory module sockets on the system board. Align
the memory modules edge connector with the alignment key on the memory module socket,
and insert the memory module into the socket. Press down on the memory module with your
thumb while pulling up on the ejectors with your index fingers to lock the memory module into
the socket.

6. It is a good idea to run the Dell Diagnostics after new RAM install.
A. Restart the computer.
B. As the computer boots, press <F12> when the Dell Splash Screen appears.

C. When the Boot menu appears, highlight the Boot to Utility Partition option, or
the Diagnostics option and then press <Enter> to start the 32-bit Dell Diagnostics.
D. Press the <Tab> key to highlight Test System Press <Enter> to continue to 32-bit Diagnostics.

Note:

In some cases PSA Diagnostics will run first. If you receive an error during PSA diagnostics Click
Here to go to the PSA Diagnostics Page. To continue onto 32-bit Diagnostics, Press N for No
when it asks you to Continue Memory Tests. Press Y To Continue the Memory Tests.

o Express Test will run a quick test of devices in the system. This typically can take 10-20
minutes.
o Extended Test performs a thorough check of devices in the system. This typically can
take an hour or more.
o Custom Test used to test a specific device or customize the tests to be run. Exit to MS-
DOS will exit the diagnostics to a command prompt.
o Symptom Tree. This option lists the most common symptoms and allows you to select
tests based on those symptoms.
