Chapters 6 & 7

6-19) A heat engine with a thermal efficiency of 40% rejects 1000kJ/kg of heat. How much
heat does it receive?

6-78) An inventor claims to have devised a cyclical engine for use in space vehicles that
operates with a nuclear-fuel-generated energy source whose temperature is 550K and a
sink at 300K that radiates waste heat to deep space. He also claims that this engine
produces 5kW while rejecting heat at a rate of 15000kJ/h. Is this claim valid?

6-93) A refrigerator is to remove heat from the cooled space at a rate of 300kJ/min to
maintain its temperature at -8degreesC. If the air surrounding the refrigerator is at
25degreesC, determine the minimum power input required for this refrigerator.
*Note: minimum power input of refrigerator implies refrigerator operates in reversible
manner

6-103) A Carnot heat engine receives heat from a reservoir at 900degreesC at a rate of
800kJ/min, and rejects the waste heat to the ambient air at 27degreesC. The entire work
output of the heat engine is used to drive a refrigerator that removes heat from the
refrigerated space at -5degreesC and transfers it to the same ambient air at 27 degrees C.
Determine (a) the maximum rate of heat removal from the refrigerated space (b) the total
rate of heat rejection to the ambient air.

7-32) A piston-cylinder device contains 1kg of refrigerant-134a at 0.8MPa and 50degreesC.

The refrigerant is now cooled at constant pressure until it exists at a liquid at 20degreesC.
Determine the entropy change of the refrigerant during this process.

7-36) Water vapour enters a turbine at 6MPa and 400degreesC and leaves the turbine at
100kPa with the same specific entropy as that at the inlet. Calculate the difference between
the specific enthalpy of the water at the turbine inlet and exit.

7-41) A piston-cylinder device contains 1.2kg of saturated water vapor at 200degreesC.

Heat is now transferred to steam, and steam expands reversibly and isothermally to a final
pressure of 800kPa. Determine the heat transferred and the work done during this process.

7-54) Steam enters a steady-flow adiabatic nozzle with a low inlet velocity as a saturated
vapor at 6MPa and expands to 1.2MPa. A) Under the conditions that the exit velocity is to be
the maximum possible value, sketch the T-s diagram with respect to saturation lines for this
process. B)Determine the maximum velocity of the steam in m/s.

7-86) An insulated rigid tank contains 4kg of argon gas at 450kPa and 30degreesC. A valve
is now opened and argon is allowed to escape until the pressure inside drops to 200kPa.
Assuming the argon remaining inside the tank has undergone a reversible, adiabatic
process, determine the final mass in the tank.

7-90) Air is expanded in an adiabatic nozzle during a polytropic process with n=1.1. it
enters the nozzle at 700kPa and 100degreesC with a velocity of 30m/s and exits at a
pressure of 200kPa. Calculate the air temperature and velocity at the nozzle exit.

7-133) Nitrogen is compressed by an adiabatic compressor from 100kPa and 25degreesC to

800kPa and 307degrees C. Calculate the entropy generation for this process, in kJ/kgK.
