NRHEG BEL CANTO, VARSITY CHOIR & CONCERT

CHOIR 2017-2018
Welcome to Choir! Panther Nation, we are back from a wonderful summer vacation
and ready for a new school year! Panther Pride is going strong and well continue to
see growth in all of our students. In choir you will use the analytical side of your brain
and will have many opportunities to sing, move, listen, and create music. Lets get
started!

GOALS
-Introduce students to a variety of musical styles from various time periods & countries.
-Learn and practice healthy vocal techniques, which minimize the strain on vocal folds.
-Help students develop a balanced perspective of, and appreciation for the arts and
their importance to community life.
-Teach students to work as a team in a collaborative, non-competitive environment,
and to appreciate the talents of each individual and their contributions to the choir.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS
1. Be respectful.
2. Be prepared.
3. Follow classroom guidelines (Listen/Respect/Safety)

CONCERT PERFORMANCES
-Singers are expected to attend all concerts and use appropriate concert etiquette
on and off stage.
-Absence due to illness is excused with communication from parent or guardian.
Make- up assignment is then discussed and assigned.
-Singers are expected to arrive on time in recommended concert attire.

Monday, December 4 at 7:30p.m. Holiday Concert ~ Black slacks (no jeans or athletic
wear) or black skirts (knee length or longer). White dress shirts/blouses (no athletic
wear).
Thursday, May 10 at 7:45p.m. Dress up! (School dress code applies)

Varsity Choir ( 7th - 8th grades)


Monday, December 4 at 7:30p.m. Holiday Concert ~ Black slacks (no jeans or athletic

Thursday, May 10 at 7:45p.m. Dress up! (School dress code applies)
Concert Choir (9th 12th grades)
September 18 at 7:00p.m. ~ Homecoming Coronation (solo/duet)
November 11 TBA ~ Veterans Day (school clothes)
December 11 at 7:30p.m. Holiday Concert (school robes)
March 5 Large Group Contest at NRHEG (during regular school hours/robes/we host
will need volunteers)
March 13 Concert Choir Spring Concert at 7:30p.m. (robes)
April 7 Solo/Ensemble Contest at MSU (Minnesota State University Mankato)
May 7 Pops Concert at 7:00p.m. (dress up!)
May 20 Baccalaureate at 7:00p.m. (solo/duet)
June 3 Graduation at 2:00p.m. (solo/duet)

ASSESSMENTS
Students will be assessed individually in the following areas:
-Recognizing and performing rhythmic/melodic patterns.
-Singing a simple melody a cappella (no piano)
-Knowledge of Curwen/Kodaly hand signs and sol fege syllables.
-Knowledge of treble and bass clef note names
-Performance skills such as proper breathing, posture, and vocal technique.

GRADING
Concert Performance 50% OR Daily Participation 50%
Daily Participation 25% Music Theory 20%
Music Theory 10% Assessments 30%
Assessments 15%

REHEARSAL & CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION


5 Follows classroom guidelines and participates almost all of the time.
May need a single reminder to participate. Readily corrects behavior and needs no
further reminders.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR CHORAL OPPORTUNITY


9-12th grade singers sign up for an audition to be a member of our mixed vocal ensemble,
PANTHERA VOX MUSICA. This group will meet on a selected day after school from 3:10p.m.
to 3:45p.m. in the Choir room, and perform at school concerts and community events.
