Part-A (5x2) (10 Marks)
1. What is normal shock?
2. What is oblique shock?
3. What is Prandtl-Mayer relation?
4. Define strength of shock wave.
5. How the Mach number before and after the occurrence of a normal shock are related?
Part-B (2x16+1x8) (40 Marks)
6. a. Air flows adiabatically in a pipe. A normal shock wave is formed. The pressure and temperature of air
before the shock are 150 kN/m2 and 25C respectively. The pressure just after the normal shock is 350
kN/m2.Calculate
(i)Mach number before the shock,(ii)Mach number, static temp and velocity of air after the shock wave
(iii)Increase in density of air, (iv)Loss of stagnation pressure of air,and (v)Change in entropy
(Or)

b. A covergent divergent nozzle is designed to expand air flows a reservoir in which the pressure is 800kPa
and temp is 40C to give a Mach number at exit of 2.5.The throat area is 25 cm2.Find (i)mass flow rate
(ii)exit area (iii)when a normal shock appears at a section where the area is 40cm 2,determine the pressure
and temperature at exit.

7. a. A convergent divergent nozzle is designed to expand air flows a reservoir in which the pressure is 700 kPa
and the temperature is 5C and the nozzle inlet Mach number is 0.2.The nozzle throat area is 46cm 2 and the
exit area is 230 sq.cm.A normal shock appears at a section where the area is 175 sq.cm.Find the exit
pressure and temperature. Also find the increase in entropy across the shock.

(Or)

b.When a convergent divergent nozzle is operated at off-design condition a normal shock occurs at a section
where the cross sectional area is 18.75 sq.cm. in the divergent portion. At inlet to the nozzle the stagnation
state is given as 0.21 MPa and 36C.The throat area is 12.5 sq.cm and exit area is 25 sq.cm.Estimate the
exit Mach number, exit pressure and loss in stagnation pressure for flow through nozzle.

8. a. An oblique shock wave occurs at the leading edge of a symmetrical wedge.Air has a Mach number of 2.1
and deflection angle of 15.Determine the following for strong and weak waves.(i) Wave angle,(ii)Pressure
angle,(iii)Density ratio,(iv)Temperature ratio,and (v)Down sream Mach number.

(Or)

b.A gas at pressure of 340 mbar, temperature of 355K and entry Mach number of 1.4 is expanded
isentropically to 140 mbar.Calculate the following (i)Deflection angle,(ii)Final Mach number,and (iii)Final
emperature of the gas.
