Answer All Questions

(Use of Heat and Mass Transfer data book and steam table is permitted)
Part A (6x2=12 Marks)

1. Define boundary layer thickness.

2. Mention the difference between free and forced convection.
3. State Newtons law of convection.
4. Define Grashof number, and explain its significance in natural convection heat transfer.
5. Define the term Reynolds number.
6. Define the term Prandtl number.
Part B (3x 16=48 Marks)
7. a. Air a 25 C at the atmospheric pressure is flowing over a flat plate at 3 m/s.If the plate is 1m
wide and the temperature Tw=75 C.Calculate the following at a location of 1m from the leading
edge.
(i)Hydrodynamic boundary layer thickness
(ii) Local friction coefficient
(iii)Thermal boundary layer thickness
(iv) Local heat transfer coefficient
(Or)
b.A vertical plate of 0.75 m height is at 170C and is exposed to air at a temperature of 105C
and one atmosphere. Calculate mean heat transfer co efficient and rate of heat transfer per unit
width of the plate.

8. a. Air at 200 kPa and 200C is heated as it flows through a tube with a diameter of 25 mm at a
velocity of 10 m./sec. The wall temperature is maintained constant and is 20C above the air
temperature all along the length of tube. Calculate:
(i) The rate of heat transfer per unit length of the tube.
(ii) Increase in the bulk temperature of air over a 3 m length of the tube.
(Or)
b A hot plate 1.2 m wide,0.35 m height and at 115C is exposed to the ambient still air at
25C.Calculate the following.
(i) Maximum velocity at 180 mm from the leading edge of the plate.
(ii) The boundary layer thickness at 180 mm from the leading edge of the plate.
(iii) Local heat transfer coefficient at 180 mm from the leading edge of the plate.
(iv) Average heat transfer co efficient over the surface of the plate.
(v) Total mass flow through the boundary.
(vi) Heat loss from the plate.
(vii)Rise in temperature of the air passing through the boundary.
9. a. Air at 400 K and 1 atm pressure flows at a speed of 1.5 m/s over a flat plate of 2 m long. The
plate is maintained at a uniform temperature of 300 K. If the plate has a width of 0.5 m, estimate
the heat transfer coefficient and the rate of heat transfer from the air stream to the plate. Also
estimate the drag force acting on the plate. (16)

b.An electric current is passed through a wire 1 mm in diameter and 10 cm long. The wire is
submerged in liquid water at atmospheric pressure, and the current is increased until the water
boils. For this situation h = 5000 W/m2C, and the water temperature will be 100 C. How much
electric power must be supplied to the wire to maintain the wire surface at 114 C?
