1 Explain conjugate action in gears. What are the ways by which interference is
avoided in gear drives?
2 What is involute pressure angle? Explain the various methods of gear production.
3 Specify any two applications where cycloidal profiles are used. Justify your
answer.
4 Explain with examples different types of lubrication in journal bearings.
5 What is multi- viscosity oil? Explain Stribecks curve.
6 Suggest and design a suitable gear drive for a reciprocating pump-motor system.
The pump is running at 320 rpm and is driven by a 50 kW motor running at 2880
rpm.
7 Design a straight bevel gear drive to transmit 20 kW .The r.p.m of the pinion is
1400 and that of the gear is 350. The material for both pinion and gear is steel
with UTS 900 MPa . Also determine the shaft forces.
8 Design a worm gear drive for a speed reducer to transmit 37 kW. The minimum
efficiency expected is 85%. The velocity reduction required is 20.The worm
speed is 500 r.p.m.
