CHAPTER - I

INTRODUCTION

An internship is an opportunity offered by an employer to potential employees, called interns, to


work at a firm for a fixed, limited period of time. Interns are usually undergraduates or students,
and most internships last for any length of time between one week and 12 months. Internships
also called "placements", "work placements" or "industrial placements" may be part-time or full-
time. They are usually part-time if offered during a university semester and full-time if offered
during the summer, winter or Easter holidays, when they typically last 4-12 weeks. Placements
are usually full-time, and take place irrespective of term time or holiday time.

The programmer provides hands-on work experience from day one, providing students the
opportunity to work directly with inspiring and experienced professionals. The insights and skills

WHO ARE INTERNS?

Interns are usually university students, or university graduates who have not yet found
employment. Interns are less frequently college students (under 23) or older "career changers".

WHAT DO INTERNS DO?

An intern is someone who works in a temporary position for an employer that operates in an
industry they are interested in working in. Unlike conventional employment, internships have an
emphasis on training, rather than employment itself.

WHY DO AN INTERNSHIP?

An internship provides a great opportunity for prospective employees to gain experience in a


particular field or industry, determine if they have an interest in a particular career, create a

Why Companies offer Internships

Companies offer students internships for a variety of both short and long-term reasons:

Short-term

In the short-term, internships provide employers with cheap (and sometimes even free) labor, for
what is usually low-level office based tasks, such as photocopying, filing or report drafting.

Long-term

Long-term, employers can use internships as an effective way of advertising their graduate jobs
and/or schemes to students. Graduate job surveys suggest that almost half of all graduate
employers hire at least 20% of their ex-interns for graduate jobs and training schemes. It is
highly likely that graduates will return to the organization that hired them as an intern for full-
time employment after leaving university.

The prospect of hiring ex-interns after graduating is also very appealing to employers because
these graduates already understand the company and the job they will be doing. Ex-interns
require little or no training.

OBJECTIVE OF INTERNSHIP TRAINING

INTRODUCTION

The main objective of the Industrial Training is to experience and understand real life situations
in industrial organizations and their related environments and accelerating the learning process of
how students knowledge could be used in a realistic way. In addition to that, industrial training
also makes one understand the formal and informal relationships in an industrial organization so
as to promote favorable human relations and teamwork. Besides, it provides the exposure to
practice and apply the acquired knowledge hands - on in the working environment. Industrial
training also provides a systematic introduction to the ways of industry and developing talent and
attitudes, so that one can understand how Human Resource Development works. Moreover,
students can gain hands-on experience that is related to the students majoring so that the student
can relate to and widen the skills that have been learnt while being in university. Industrial
training also exposes the students to the real career world and accustoms them to an
organizational structure, business operation and administrative functions. Furthermore, students
implement what they have learned and learn more throughout this training. Besides, students can
also gain experience to select the optimal solution in handling a situation. During industrial
training students can learn the accepted safety practices in the industry. Students can also
develop a sense of responsibility towards society.

Why are internships important? There are very few courses at university that provide graduates
with a specific professional qualification. It is generally down to you to define and implement

PURPOSE OF INTERNSHIP:

The purpose of Industrial Training is to expose students to real work of environment experience
and at the same time, to gain the knowledge through hands on observation and job execution.
From the industrial training, the students will also develop skills in work ethics, communication,
management and others. Moreover, this practical training program allows students to relate
theoretical knowledge with its application in the manufacturing industry.

The objectives of industrial training are:


To provide students the opportunity to test their interest in a particular career before
permanent commitments are made.
To develop skills in the application of theory to practical work situations.
To develop skills and techniques directly applicable to their careers.
Internships will increase a student's sense of responsibility and good work habits.
To expose students to real work environment experience gain knowledge in writing

NEED OF STUDY

A summer internship with a large firm will give you practical work experience in your field of
interest. An internship with a good firm will add great value to your resume and will give you an

work experience in the field you have chosen to pursue.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY:

The main issues may be human, economical, functional etc, but the construction and/or
application of some kind of research instrument are the focus of the study. The analysis of the
research findings (e.g. clients responses to questionnaire about changing product specifications)
should take place, resulting in proposals about how to manage relevant aspects of the
organisations future. Explanatory- a study, which would involve studying relationships between
different
variables like a cause & effect relationship study. Descriptive- a study that would need an in-
depth portrayal of an accurate profile of events.

MANAGERIAL SKILS:

Since the automotive industry is known for its ability to adapt to new trends and technology, its
important that workers within the sector maintain a comprehensive and multifaceted skill set.
While the needs of a specific employer may change from year to year, there are several traits that
are commonly considered when recruiting skilled workers in the automotive industry.

Given the constantly changing and ever-evolving nature of the automotive industry, many
