COURSE DESCRIPTION: Historical and comparative analysis of race and ethnic

relations. Origins and maintenance of ethnic stratification systems, discrimination and
prejudice, the adaptations of minority communities, role of social movements and
government policies in promoting civil rights and social change.
PURPOSE AND FORMAT OF THIS COURSE: If you are a feminist, you would insist that
patriarchy, that is, the system of male domination, is the most fundamental form of
oppression. If you are a member of a racial or ethnic minority group, you would
insist that the most fundamental form of oppression is that of racism and
ethnocentrism. If you are Marxist, or a member of the economically challenged class,
or lower class, you would insist that the most fundamental form of oppression is that of
Capitalisms exploitation of the worker. How do we reconcile all of these issues within a
coherent discourse? We must first agree on the ground rules for this class. Everyone in
this class has problems. Everyone in here has or will be the victim of some form of
discrimination. Naturally, all of us believe that our own experiences are the most
insidious, and no one else could possibly understand how we feel unless he or she were
exactly like us. We must agree to disagree. We must be open to one anothers
experiences and feelings if we are to learn anything about race, class and gender this
semester. Emphasis will be placed on the social construction of race, class, and gender in
America. You must be open to new ideas and new realities if you are to appreciate, enjoy,
and learn anything in this class.
