Engineering Civil
Environmental Engineering and Safety
Sangeeta Raut & Sudip Kumar Sen
Future scien sts, engineers, public health workers face challenges which were predicted, but
certainly not expected to emerge this soon and to the magnitude presently occurring. The
problems and projected solu ons in this book cover a broad spectrum of issues including
industrial and domes c solid wastes, air pollu on and associated global warming, noise pollu on
and safety. Many engineering elements go into developing solu ons to these problems including
the need for addi onal detailed mapping and surveying, developing improved waste water
treatment, including the development of more eco-friendly process and importance on
conserva on. Issues such as environmental assessments now play a most important role in
prac cally all proposed developments. Old landlls are being mined for fuel, new landlls are
designed to prevent waste materials from migra ng to groundwater and new approaches to
waste incinera on focus on energy recovery and conversion of waste materials into usable
materials. This text should help engineers and scien sts meet the environmental challenges.

Limit State Design of Steel Structures

Ramchandra & V. Gehlot
Method of Limit State (Ul mate Limit State, (ULS) and serviceability limit state (SLS)) present an
improved design philosophy and makes allow-ance for the short-compings of working stress method
(conven onal and long me used in prac ce). This method provides basic framework, within which
the performance of the steel structures may be assessed against various limi ng condi ons and invo-
lves some concept of probability. Object of limit design method is to get steel structure that will remain
t for use during its life with acceptable target reliability. The probability of a limit state being reached
during its life me is kept very small. This method has been broadly adopted in many developed
countries and based on the recommenda ons of IS: 800-2007 (Third Revised Edi on). This method has
been covered in nine parts (in twenty six chapters and four appendices) as listed in contents. A er
introducing `Limit State Method of Design of Concrete Structures (LSD: CC) in IS: 456-1978, it was
natural for Bureau of Indian Standard to introduce `Limit State Design of Steel Structures (LSD: SS). SI
units for text for complete book, uncertain es involved in the working stress method and the concept
of par al safety factors for the loads and strength of mate-rials (for yield and ul mate stresses
reached) are the special feature of the book. Concepts of shear centre for thin-walled beam cross-
sec ons and unsymmetrical bending of beams are important for various requirements and have been
included in appendices. The text of book has been covered in about 1000 pages and 550 diagrams. The
texts of various topics has been explained in many illustra ve worked-out examples.

Design of Steel Structures Vol.1
Ramchandra & V. Gehlot
Twel h edi on, 2009 of this book is based on IS: 800-2007 and also newly revised IS: 883-1994
(code of prac ce for mber structures). New code of prac ce, IS: 800 is likely to be issued soon. It
is likely to introduce ``Limit State Design of Steel Structures''. Authors have distributed the text in
thirty four chapters in main text and one chapter `on Loca on of Shear Centre' in Appendix A.
Concept of Shear Centre and bending axis is important and signicant and essen ally needed to
understand simple theory of bending and so also unsymmetrical bending. Complete-text has
been updated and new ma er added (e.g., elas c buckling, inelas c, stability and instability of
columns and compression members, torsional-buckling, torsional-exural buckling, etc.).
Behaviour of web-s eners and web-panels specially near the end panels, tension-eld ac on
has been rst me included to familiarise the students with the concept. Durability of steel
members have been emphasized phenomenon of corrosion has been dis nctly explained.

Ramchandra & V. Gehlot
Eight edi on of this book is based on Bridge Rules (Adopted in 1941, Revised in 1964 and Reprinted in
1989), and IS: 800-2007. Authors have distributed present text in the edi on in thirty two chapters
[that is, in Four parts (1) Steel Bridges and Inuence Lines Diagrams for axial forces for the members
of dierent types of truss-girders, (2) Special Steel Structures (3) Analysis of Structures specially, the
method of tension co-ecients for determinate and indeterminate structures, (4) Aluminium
structures. In order to emphasize that similar to various other subjects, this subject is also very vast.
Therefore, space steel structures and stressed-skin steel structures have been described special
features of this new-edi on of this book may be men oned as under (1) Historical development of
dierent types of steel bridges details of some spans of longest spans of various types of steel
bridges, (2) Design of Guyed Steel Chimneys (3) Instantaneous Centre of Rota on (ICR) and Plas c
Analysis of Pitched slope (i.e., gable structure) and inuences of axial forces and shear forces on the

Kamlesh Purohit
Fluid Mechanics - RTU S.P. Harsha
(for Rajasthan Technical University) R.K. Purohit
The book is in the form of a ready reference. The subject ma er of stra graphy is full of names of
forma ons, groups, etc. At mes when we need to know about a certain forma on for which we do
not know the exact stra graphic posi on, then we have to search the en re book, page by page,
which becomes quite irrita ng and me consuming. To overcome this problem, the idea of arranging
the dierent forma ons in an alphabe c order occurred to the author. During this process it was seen
that many small forma ons, which are otherwise important, do not get their due representa on,
because they lie in company or associa on with much larger forma ons. Otherwise also stra graphy
is nothing but an orderly and chronological arrangement of dierent forma ons. In other words, we
can say that stra graphy is a language by itself, where dierent forma ons are its words. Same is the
case with large number of fossils occurring in dierent forma ons. In the usual literature on the
subject, it is prac cally impossible to nd in what forma on or forma ons a par cular fossil occurs
and to which fossil group it belongs. Alphabe cal arrangement of fossils as shown in the list of fossils
will help students and scholars to persue their task in an easier and quicker way. To arrange such a
large number of fossils in an alphabe cal order and to nd their fossil groups was really a tough job.
S ll the author does not claim that all the forma ons and fossils occurring in the Indian stra graphy
are included in this book, and it cannot be the last word on the subject. This is more true in case of
fossils, where unlimited literature is available.
