W
hen it comes to autos and
women, well, there can often
be a something of a love-hate
relationship. But more and more, auto
manufacturers have to realize the po-
tential women have on the ultimate pur-
chase and are doing their best to satisfy
demands women may have.
Women are making the decisions
now, said Annette DiLorenzo Thayer,
managing partner of the Quality Mazda
dealership. The higher percentage is
women making that decision regarding the
purchase. And nothing tops the list of de-
sires like safety features, she said. Moms
are always interested in the safety rating,
Thayer said. Thats something theyre
always concerned. Especially for moms,
thats the No. 1 thing.
Thats been driving changes at the
manufacturers, said Lorie Holler, general
sales manager for Fiat and Alfa Romeo
of Albuquerque. For safety features,

the back-up cameras and plenty of air
bags are important, she said. Some of
them have built-in child seats, so you
dont have to worry about a childs seat
because its already there. Car seats are
definitely an issue, said Samantha Gunn
of Land Rover Jaguar of Albuquerque.
We have a new thing called Isofix, she
said. There are little latches that pop
right off and the car seat goes right into
it. Its the nicest system ever.
The new models that have built-in sen-
sors as added safety features are also very
important, Holler said. And assist-to-lane
departure is great so if you start to go into
the wrong lane, the cars have different
sensors so either the seat will vibrate or in
some, there will be beeping sound when
youre starting to go in, she said. Most
women I know prefer the beeping sound.
I know if I feel the seat vibrating, I think
something is broken.

heres just something about hit-
ting the open road in the summer
time for an adventurous trip out of
town. Whether its driving solo to parts
unknown, or packing up the whole fam-
ily to hit a series of tourist stops, theres
the freedom of the open road.
Any number of vehicles can serve for
such an excursion and for Buddy Espi-
nosa, owner of Toyota of Santa Fe, the
perfect vehicle was a Toyota Sienna van.
Two summers ago I rented one from the
dealership, he said. It was just a great
vehicle. Seven us went in it and headed
to the Grand Canyon, Disneyland and
Knotts Berry Farm. We did it all over
again because we had such a great time.

said Gunn, who has one child and also fre-
quently also has her sisters three children.
There are a lot of tools that help you
drive, she said. We have a blind spot
monitoring package, so if a car is coming
up, even if its not in the blind spot yet,
your rear-view mirror is going to flash and
it will say a car is approaching. And one
Gunn said she really likes is the traffic-sign
recognition technology. Theres a camera
right by the rear-view mirror by the wind-
shield, she said. ITs great for instance if
youre going through a construction zone
and goes from 75 to 65, then from 55 to
45, it picks up each one of those signs, it
goes live on the speedometer so you can
see it. Sometimes its hard to pay attention
to everything thats going on so its nice to
know there is something to help.

all the power you could want, it had lots of
storage space and it was comfortable. That
was the most important part about it.
At the Land Rover Jaguar of Albu-

ery occasion, said previous owner, Rocky
Hughes. We have some incredible cars
that would be wonderful for any kind of
trip, let alone a summer or fall vacation,
he said. Dealership sales manager John
Monette said the Jaguar F-Type is great a
great sporty car. It pushes 600 horsepower
with all-wheel drive. This makes driv-
ing mountainous roads and switchbacks

Do you have any siblings working
with you in the company?
I have an older sister, Sarah
McKamey, and she has been
the warranty administrator for
three years.
Did you know youd be taking over
the GM position?
My dad has been the owner
for 30-years and sold it to Group
1 Automotive. So yes, weve
been talking about it for quite a
while. When my dad was start-
ing to step down a little bit and
decided to officially sell I got
moved into that role.
How has your degree in Marketing
and Operations helped you in your
position as the General Manager?
Its helped a lot. The Ander-
son School of Management is a
great place to start your career
and really understand business.
As women, we are a minor-
ity in the automotive industry.
My degree has really helped
me understand people and the
marketing aspect has been huge
since I had real life experiences.

What was your position before you
became GM?
I started out in sales and
had always handled marketing
for the dealership. From there
I became the warranty admin-
istrator and did a six months
internship with Land Rover
in Nevada. I sat with all of the
managers and learned how to
do their jobs. That really helped
me feel comfortable in my man-
agerial role. When I came back
to Albuquerque while my dad
was the president, I was the vice
president. I had a lot of differ-
ent jobs, not just one specific job.
Whatever needed to be done
that day I took care of it.
How long have you been in the
car business?
Well, pretty much my whole
life now. In middle school I
would always come and do
little jobs with my dad, but
professionally for about seven
years now.
Our issue this month is about what
women want in their vehicle. With
Jaguar and Land Rover, what is it
you think women prefer or value
in their car?
I would say safety, which is
definitely a great feature in both
of these brands. Another one is
how stylish it is. You cant go
wrong with a Jaguar or a Land
Rover. Comfort and conve-
nience is also a feature they look
in for their car, and one of my fa-
vorite features is the easy entry/
exit using the auto start button.
These cars fit the active lifestyle
women and moms have. They
are always on the go and have
their hands full.
Im guessing youre a working mom?
Yes, I have a daughter named
Dakota and she is a year-and-a-
half. Another thing I really love
as a mom is that it has the ISO
Fix latches for car seats. So you
arent giving yourself arthritis
trying to get the latch in there,

I drive the F-PACE that
just came out in 2017. I love
everything about it. You feel
safe on and off road with
the all-wheel drive package,

What makes the Jaguar and
Land Rover vehicles stand
out?
The brand has really
grown a lot in these last
nine years. We are owned
by Tata motors, and their
investment in the brand
has really made the product
strongI mean its pretty
amazing. A lot of our cars
only need to be serviced
every 16,000 miles or once a
year and have great warran-
ty. They have an aluminum
body, which make it lighter
and faster, and in case of
impact it absorbs more en-
ergy than steel.

what Im hearing from women, they want
something that can fit their children but
doesnt look like a soccer mom van, she
said. Something thats fun to drive, like
any SUV and with lots of room in the back
so you can fit soccer equipment. It has to
be big enough to tote plenty of kids around,
as well. A mother that has children, they
want the third row because the kids always
have friends with them, Holler said. They
always want the room for kids and their
activities and can carry more than four pas-
sengers in the vehicle. And they want all the
accessories like the blue tooth and screens in
the back to keep the kids entertained.

however, Monette said a Range Rover Sport
would be a good choice. Its a very, very safe
and attractive car, he said. Its not big and
cumbersome, but theres plenty of room for
five people. The only strike against it is some-
one like Julia Roberts wouldnt look so good
in that car, because the car is gorgeous. If its
for a large group outing, the brand new Dis-
covery vehicle would be the one to select. If I
was a family going on a road trip, Id certainly
consider that car, Monette said. It seats sev-
en people and has an excellent tow capacity of
5,800 pounds, so you could tow a small trailer.
Its a very comfortable car, but its capable of
going off road.
There are numerous other fun vehicles out
there that will make for an exciting summer
roadie. The new Hyundai Ioniq, for instance,
is great for gobbling up the miles without
gobbling up the wallet. The hatchback hybrid
features plenty of room and comes with a
1.6-liter gas engine paired to an electric motor.
For some folks, taking a road trip means find-
ing a road a lot less traveled, and preferably
in pretty sketchy shape. Those are the folks
checking out the new Ford F-150 Raptor Su-
percrew. Its been beefed up with more room,
comfort and a weight-loss program through a
new aluminum body dropped the poundage
a convenient package where the doors will
unlock automatically when the key is within
a 3-foot radius of the car, she said. It just
makes it a lot easier. Climate control pack-
ages are also becoming quite popular with
women, Gunn said.
Thats really nice for Albuquerque be-
cause you never know what kind of weather
youre going to get in Albuquerque, she
said. We have heated steering wheels and
heated windshields that automatically melt
the snow right off the windshield. Heated
and cooled front and rear seats. For the
woman sans children, having a ride that
looks good is important, Holler said.
They want something like the (Alfa
Romeo) Giulia or (Fiat) Spyder, which are
both fun to drive, but they have all the
safety features, back up camera, lane as-
sistance and theyre really great on fuel
because theyre always looking for it to be
economical. They want all that but they

V-6 engine and an advanced four-wheel drive
system and on top of being more spacious and previous models, meaning theres just that
comfortable than the previous model.
For those who like their road trip to be a bit
less rocky, the new Chrysler Pacifica fits the
bill for families. Flush with high safety ratings
and a rear-seat entertainment system, the kids
will be happy and safe, allowing mom and
dad to enjoy the scenery. The rear-seat enter-
tainment system includes dual touch screens
that can play DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and, of
course, video games from HDMI-connected
devices. Although a minivan, it offers solid
fuel economy, and the Stow n Go system cre-
ates extra storage space by folding the second
row of seats into the floor. For a trip along,
say, the Mother Road, the Honda Fit might
be the place to get your kicks. Its fresh with
plenty of usable space and storage, with solid
fuel economy. Its roomy enough in both the
front and second-row seats. If theres a draw-
back its that the Fit may not have the get-up-
and-go for long stretches of interstate travel,
but when checking out the neon along Route
66, who needs all that extra power? The Jeep
Grand Cherokee, however, is all about power
with its upgraded 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 en-
gine that still gets 30 miles to the gallon on the

who work there, Thayer said. A lot of it is
how theyre approached, in service espe-
cially, she said. Women are really loyal,
especially if treated with respect. Thats
the main issue. They dont want anyone
to assume they need anybody else to make
a decision. If theyre treated with respect,
especially in service, theyre really loyal to
the dealership.

Once again, its hard to go wrong with
a minivan family jaunt and the Mazda5 is
roomy enough for most families without
pinching the budget on gas mileage. Al-

best with four, allowing the rear seats to
fold back for more storage space. Minivans
are great for family road trips, but not ev-
eryone wants to drive a bus. The six-seat
Mazda5 strikes a nice balance between the
space of a minivan, the road manners and
fuel economy of a mid-size car, and the
price tag of a compact. Be warned, though,
that the 2-2-2 seating arrangement limits
flexibility -- chances are youll have to fold
the back seats for additional cargo space,
and that drops the Mazda5s seating ca-
pacity to four. Finally, the Infiniti QX60,
a mid-size, SUV crossover is roomy with
storage space, and offers plenty of comfort
for small or large families. It features Intel-
ligent Cruise Control, which automatically
adjusts the vehicles speed in accordance
with the surrounding traffic, which can
help on a long road trip.
