IbnRushdfurtheredthetraditionofGreekphilosophyintheIslamic
world(falsafa).HiscommentariesremovedtheneoPlatonicbiasofhispredecessors.[2]CriticizingalFarabi's
attempttomergePlatoandAristotle'sideas,IbnRushdarguedthatAristotle'sphilosophydivergedin
significantwaysfromPlato's.[35]AverroesrejectedAvicenna'sNeoplatonism[36]whichwaspartlybasedonthe
worksofneoPlatonicphilosophers,PlotinusandProclus,whichweremistakenlyattributedtoAristotle.[37]

Inmetaphysics,ormoreexactlyontology,IbnRushdrejectstheviewadvancedbyAvicennathatexistenceis
merelyaccidental.Avicennaholdsthat"essenceisontologicallypriortoexistence".Theaccidentalare
attributeswhicharenotessential,butratherareadditionalcontingentcharacteristics.IbnRushd,following
Aristotle,holdsthatindividualexistingsubstancesareprimary.Onemayseparatethemmentallyhowever,
ontologicallyspeaking,existenceandessenceareone.[38][39][40]AccordingtoFakhry,[41]thisrepresentsa
changefromPlato'stheoryofIdeas,whereideasprecedeparticulars,toAristotle'stheorywhereparticulars
comefirstandtheessenceis"arrivedatbyaprocessofabstraction."
