S15 Application Guideline 1.

3-Wire Control (Momentary Start/Stop)

Introduction
As a default the S15 drive uses a maintained contact to start the motor in either the forward or reverse direction.
If this contact is closed, the drive will run the motor in the indicated direction depending upon which input
terminal is used (F Forward / R Reverse). The S15 may also be programmed to use a normally open,
momentary input to start the motor, and a normally closed momentary input to stop. This arrangement is often
called a momentary start/stop or 3 wire control. The speed reference can be supplied by any standard input.
This app note shows the programming steps necessary to program, wire and operate the S15 drive using 3 wire
control.

cmod Command Mode Selection 1: Panel Keypad 0: Terminal Block

f114 Input Terminal Selection 4 (S1) 10: Preset Speed Command 1 (SS1) 50: Operation Hold (HD)

Operation
The switch between S1 (operation hold) and CC should be closed. If this switch is not closed, any command
entered through a terminal is ignored. If the S1 switch is closed to CC, a momentary contact to either F or R will
start the drive in the indicated direction (forward or reverse). Output frequency will be controlled dependent on
the setting of the fmod parameter. Refer to S11 operation and maintenance manual for details on Frequency
Mode Selection.

3 Wire Control Notes

If a RUN signal is sent during DC braking it will not have an effect until DC braking is completed and
the drive has fully stopped.
To change direction while running, close the opposite directional terminal (F or R) to cc. The drive will
slow through 0Hz before accelerating in the new direction.
If a Jog run command is issued during the three-wire operation, the inverter will stop.

If the drive does not run at the commanded speed, verify all connections and programming on the unit. Ensure
that the correct logic setting is selected on switch SW1. Units are shipped from the factory with a default setting
of PLC for SW1, and most applications will need to be configured for SINK logic. If the unit still does not
operate, contact Toshiba LV ASD Marketing at the number shown at the end of the document.
