Kubiak Research Group (2009 - 2015) UC San Diego


Electrocatalytic upgrading of renewable carbon feedstocks (2013 - 2015)
• Successfully combined CO2 reduction to a fuel precursor with oxidative upgrading of a
biomass derivative
• Characterized current-voltage behavior of a test device and created a power matched
photovoltaic power source
• Participated in a 12-member team for a 3-hour presentation to NSF staff and academic panel
at NSF Headquarters in Arlington, VA. Proposed Phase II ideas and defended Phase I funding
and research.
Proof of concept photo fuel cell device (2010 - 2013) UC San Diego
• Wrote proposal, developed, and patented a method for utilizing UV light and large band gap
semiconductors to efficiently oxidize hydrocarbons and other organics for a fuel cell device.
• Lead the multi-campus effort together with labs at the California Institute of Technology as
the primary graduate researcher
• Managed biweekly meetings and presented results to DARPA fund managers on a quarterly
basis.
