equations
A process in which one or more substances is changed into one
or more new substances is a chemical reaction
A chemical equation uses chemical symbols to show what
happens during a chemical reaction
reactants products
3 ways of representing the reaction of H2 with O2 to form H2O
2
How to Read Chemical Equations
2 Mg + O2 2 MgO
NOT
2 grams Mg + 1 gram O2 makes 2 g MgO
3
Balancing Chemical Equations
2 carbon 1 carbon
multiply CO2 by 2
on left on right
C2H6 + O2 2CO2 + H2O
6 hydrogen 2 hydrogen
multiply H2O by 3
on left on right
C2H6 + O2 2CO2 + 3H2O

Amounts of Reactants and Products
235 g H2O
16
Limiting Reagent:
Reactant used up first in
the reaction.
2NO + O2 2NO2
17
Limiting Reagent
Reactant that determines the amount of product formed.
The one you run out of first.
Makes the least product.
Book shows you a ratio method.
It works.
So does mine
Limiting reagent
To determine the limiting reagent requires that you do two
stoichiometry problems.
Figure out how much product each reactant makes.
The one that makes the least is the limiting reagent.
Excess Reagent
The reactant you dont run out of.
The amount of stuff you make is the yield.
The theoretical yield is the amount you would make if everything
went perfect.
The actual yield is what you make in the lab.
In one process, 124 g of Al are reacted with 601 g of Fe2O3

Example
Ammonia is produced by the following reaction
N2 + H2 NH3 What mass
of ammonia can be produced from a mixture of 100. g N2 and 500. g
H2 ?
How much unreacted material remains?

Actual Yield
% Yield = x 100%

1) Mr. Eugene made an experiment combining
hydrogen and oxygen and got an amount of 52.01
g water. He is expecting to get 58.00 g of water.
What is the % yield?
