This morning, we are going to join millions of Christians all over the world in reading the same passage
from the Gospel according to Luke 19:2938:
All across the world
In hundreds of different languages
Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Protestants, Evangelicals
All reading this same passage of scripture! Luke 19:2938
This, of course, is the very important story known as Christs Triumphal entrance to Jerusalem.
Palm Sunday! All four gospels take note of this very important event1 in the life of Christ.
In the church calendar this story starts the most important season of the Christian calendar and the
Christian faith: Holy Week (Way more important than Christmas).
Christians for many (many) years, way back to early Christianity have set aside this week as the most
important week in the Christian faith.
Please stand for the reading of the Gospel! Luke 19:2938
As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his
disciples, saying to them, Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied
there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, Why are you
untying it? say, The Lord needs it. Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told
them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, Why are you untying the colt? They
replied, The Lord needs it. They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it.
As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. When he came near the place where the
road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud
voices for all the miracles they had seen: Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! Luke 19:2938 (NIV)
The big event starts with Jesus sending two of his disciples ahead to get a donkey for him to
ride into Jerusalem. I find this quite remarkable! Jesus tells them:
Go to the village ahead of you (That would have been Bethphage), and as you enter it, you
will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. (When we in our culture hear the
word colt we think of a young horse. But the Greek word here is referring to the colt of a
donkey, a young donkey) Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, Why are you untying
it? say, The Lord needs it.
So the two disciples head off and sure enough there is the colt just as he had told them
verse 33
As they were untying the colt (donkey), its owners asked them, Why are you untying the colt
(donkey)? 34They replied, The Lord needs it. They brought it to Jesus
Now I need to expand on this a bit for us to get the full impact of this passage Please
notice carefully this word Lord!

Page 2 of 5 Jesus needs your donkey

This Greek word is a very important word!
Greek word: i = (koo'-ree-os) means lord master, owner.
Someone who has the top authority!
Illustration: Kids game Im the King of the castle also called King of the Hill. The object of the
game which is to stay on top of a large hill.
The word Kureeos means LORD or The King of the castle
This same word appears twice in these two verses:
Verse 34 The Lord needs it.
And verse 33 its owners asked them (same word lord)
They got knocked off the lord hill by the King of the Castle! There is no argument, no further
questioning, no we will think about it the very next line is They brought it to Jesus
Why? Jesus is Lord, and when Jesus wants your donkey that is what you do! You give him your donkey!
Today in our world a donkey is a funny animal you see in a petting zoo, a novelty but to these people,
this was their business, their plow animal, their tractor, their revenue, their mode of transportation!

It makes perfect sense for them to say Why are you untying my donkey?
But when they heard The Lord needs it that was end of discussion!
I might own the donkey but the Lord owns the rights over me!
You see its about this word LORD! IS JESUS YOUR LORD? Can He ask you for your donkey, your car,
your revenue, your business, your time?
Today, especially in North America, the Gospel and Christianity has been repackaged to a
watered down message that says: Becoming a Christian is easy, all you have to do is say a sinners
prayer (raise your hand at the end of a sermon) and ask Jesus to be your saviour and forgive you of
your sins. Once you have done that youre in! We have created a false Christianity that says you can
have faith without repentance, heaven with Christ in the next world without obedience to Christ in
this world, receiving Jesus as Saviour without having to receive Jesus as Lord!

The gospel starts to take place in your life the moment you make Jesus your Lord, JESUS IN FIRST
PLACE, the moment you step off of the hill and make Him King of your castle!
Jesus cannot be my Saviour until FIRST he is truly my Lord!
If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him
from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
Lord FIRST then Saviour! Lets not forget the order
Illustration: I downloaded a free version of this app called Myfitnessapp. I use it to track what
I eat, how many calories, salt, etc. I used it just fine for one year but now it is
encouraging me to upgrade to the Premium version for $13.99 a month.

Page 3 of 5 Jesus needs your donkey

But I am doing just fine with the free version! It does all I need it to do. That is how many
people have come to think of Christianity. Theres salvationin which you get your sins
forgiven and entrance to heaventhats the free version of the Im a Christian app. Then
theres the Premium version of the Im a Christian app thats for those people that
want to really get serious: missionaries, pastors, the deeper kind of Christians, the extra
dedicated the ones who obey Jesus with their giving, seek the Lords will in their lives, repent
of their wrong attitudes, forgive people when they wrong them (the Premium Christians!)
that is great but that is optional Ill stick with the free version of the Im a Christian
app for now, thank you very much! As long as Im on my way to heaven when I die in the
meantime Ill show up to church if its convenient, help the poor - give in the offering if I have
anything left over after I get all the stuff I want, spend time in prayer and in the Word once in
a while if Im not too busy, tell a fib here and there as long as it isnt too bad, cheat a little as
long as no one gets hurt, flirt a little with my neighbours wife as long as I dont actually have
sex with her you know, I can always say a quick little prayer and ask Jesus my Saviour to
forgive me and He always does!
And its, pass go collect $200 (Im going to heaven when I die). But is He your Lord?
They placed Jesus on the donkey and he started down towards Jerusalem. The crowd started
to shout Some shouted Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Others shouted
Hosanna! = save us. Others, the Pharisees, (did not believe in him) criticized!
Same groups of people today!
Those who just dont want anything to do with him
Those who are will to call on him to save them (Heal me! Give me a job! Help me
financially! Help me with this test!)
Those who are willing to follow Him as King and Lord!
All through the New Testament the subject is about Jesus as Lord!
When he encounters Peter he doesnt say Peter, lets have a little prayer he says,
park your boat and follow me
When he meets Matthew, the tax collector, he says follow me
Matthew leaves his crooked business and follows Jesus!
The key question is this: Are you going to follow Jesus?
The prophet Zechariah prophesied hundreds of years before
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is
coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of
a donkey. Zechariah 9:9 (NKJV)
Those men where chosen by God, hundreds of years before, to provide a young donkey for
Jesus triumphal entrance to Jerusalem

Page 4 of 5 Jesus needs your donkey

What will he ask of me, what will he ask of you?
Maybe all he wants to do is use your donkey your car, pick this person up for church next
week maybe help this person out financially
Illustration: A while ago I came into an unexpected extra $100. Hey, maybe I can get myself
a new tool, new pair of jeans a couple of days later I heard about a need someone had
and as I was praying I felt the Lord impressing me to help them I thought, maybe $25 or
$50 no, no! The Lord needs your $100! He is Lord!
The Lord needs you to
Call so and so
Say Im sorry
Get up in the night and pray
Fast
Get baptised
Help in the nursery
Give someone your second car
What will He ask of you? Will you say yes?
Are you going to follow Jesus? Is he Lord? King?
