Just Thinking
By: May Jones
Today, just down the road from me, there is a tag sale. Its at the old farmhouse
where Doris lived all of her life. She died this past February in her nineties.
At this stage of life I am not only witnessing, but also participating in the dis-
posal of the personal belongings of people who dont need them anymore. We
human beings collect a lot of things throughout our lives; things that we know are
temporary and cannot take with us. Yet we have this repetitive urge to buy, use
once or twice, and either discard it or store it away. Many of us run out of room
even in the largest of houses, and then need storage units.
We can do better by becoming more savvy consumers. Here are some tips:
Wait 24 hours before making a purchase of any kind. More often than not, you
will find it wasnt the thing you wanted, it was the thrill of buying somethingwhich
is very short lived.
Make sure you dont have it already I have 12 heavy duty lead cords.
Ask yourself, Do I need this or do I want it? Is it an emotional purchase or a
necessary purchase?
When buying apparel set the rule of one in - one out. If you buy one new shirt,
one old one is given to the second hand shop. This way you keep a steady inven-
tory of shirts, pants, and shoes.
In place of giving gifts, give experiences instead; such as a picnic at the park, or
a day watching movies and eating popcorn. Time is the best gift you can ever give
to anyone you love.
Ben Franklin tried his best to live up to his thirteen virtues, and although he ad-
mitted to falling short of them, he felt he was a better man for trying. A few of them
fit into this subject: Frugality - he tried to waste nothing, Order - he felt everything
should have its place,
Moderation - he avoided extremes, Industry - he cut off all unnecessary actions,
and
Cleanliness - which speaks for itself. So, within five of the thirteen virtues, he
alluded to consumerism.
If Ben Franklin doesnt convince you, heres what the Dalai Lama has to say on
the subject: People were created to be loved. Things were created to be used.
The reason why the world is in such chaos is because things are being loved and
people are being used.
It just cannot be said any better than that.
