Steven Quinn-Assistant Director Childrens Services, Renfrewshire
NIF drivers for improvement-Teacher Professionalism/ Leadership

Steven will introduce the Making Maths Count in Renfrewshire Conference. He will outline the
present landscape, the vision for Renfrewshire and the plans for the day. Steven will mention the
headline results of our extensive HIGIOS 4 self-evaluation, What you told us, what we have done and
what we are going to do. He will inform the conference of the new maths blog and encourage all to
take part in the twitter challenge throughout the day. Finally Steven will introduce The Things we are
getting right in Renfrewshire video.

Maureen McKenna Making Maths Count Chair

wellbeing and iImprovement in employability and sustained positive school leaver destinations) NIF drivers for
improvement-Teacher Professionalism

Maureen will deliver the key messages from the Making Maths Count report and the Scottish
government agenda to drive this forward. Maureen will challenge all maths teachers to look at their
practice, attitudes approach and encourage all to continue to promote the subject and take forward
the messages from The Making Maths Count Report.

Stuart Cathro HMI (Mathematics and Numeracy)

Stuart will share with staff key messages on challenge and improvement through self-evaluation
using How good is our school? 4th Edition. Increase staff awareness of recent changes to inspection
and provide an update on Insight and the Scottish National Standardised Assessment.

Pat and Lynne will introduce the landscape from the primary, attainment challenge perspective.

Allison Hennesay- Growth Mind-Set


(NIF key priority Improvement in Children and Young Peoples Health and Wellbeing)

Allison will talk to staff about developing a growth mind set as practitioners and how we can develop
a growth mind set in our pupils. This will be maths focused and related directly to secondary maths
teachers. The idea is to leave all staff with a positive challenging message that we can really improve
attainment through this approach.

Billy Burke- Head teacher, Renfrew high School

Billy will sum up the days events at the conference and provide information on the work that he is
doing with The Making Maths Count group.

Billy will leave everyone with a challenge to take away and change one thing that you can share on
twitter and The Maths Blog.

Billy will also provide information on The Scottish Maths Week.

Workshop 1

The role of Numeracy and Mathematics

Key Messages, Education Scotland


Lorna Harvey-Senior Education Officer Numeracy/ Maths, Education Scotland

(NIF key priority Improvement in attainment in numeracy)

Lorna (former head teacher) has been a member of the National Numeracy and Mathematics Team
at Education Scotland for 3 years and is currently the team lead.

Lorna will talk about the role of numeracy and mathematics in Curriculum for Excellence, Making
Maths Count, Read, Write Count and Education Scotlands online resources. She will share the latest
national developments in numeracy and mathematics with staff with a focus on how using the
benchmarks will support staff in assessment, moderation and sharing the standard.

Workshop 2

Bringing Literacy into the Maths Classroom


Lyndsey Duncan - PEF Literacy Lead, West Lothian Council, former Literacy Education Officer,
Education Scotland

Lyndsey has been working as Education Officer Literacy with Education Scotland, taking forward
national developments in literacy. Lyndsey will share her experience, the national picture and share
with you some simple, but effective ways to bring literacy into the maths classroom now.

Raising Attainment using Scholar


Lynne Biagioni - Scholar Advisor, Heriot Watt University

Lynne has been supporting local authorities making effective use of scholar to support staff, parents
and pupils through the senior phase. This is an underutilised resource particularly in mathematics
that has been shown to have a big impact on pupils attainment.

Introducing a CGI (Cognitively Guided Instruction)

Approach to Raising Attainment in Numeracy and Mathematics


Graham McKechnie - PT Pupil Support, Stephen Smith - Acting PT Maths, Renfrew High

(NIF key priority Closing the attainment gap between the most and least disadvantaged children)

Graham and Stephen have been working successfully together to improve engagement and
achievement with pupils who have traditionally found maths challenging and have switched off.

Using a CGI approach, they have made a big impact on the achievements and attitudes of many of
their most disengaged young people.

Effective tracking and monitoring

to ensure

flexible pathways to the senior phase


Bernadette McFadden - DHT St Benedicts High School

Bernadette will share her experience of effective tracking and monitoring as a PT Maths and now in
her capacity as DHT and time tabler. She will discuss the challenges of ensuring that based on robust
evidence, we create flexible pathways through mathematics to ensure that pupils maximise their
attainment through the senior phase developing skills for learning life and work leading to positive
and sustained destinations.

Higher Mathematics Teaching and Learning and Marking Tips


Margie Walker- PT Maths Gleniffer High School, Robert Allan - PT Maths Linwood High School,

SQA Team Leaders Higher Maths

Margie and Robert have extensive experience in leading teams involved in marking higher maths and
they are going to share this expertise with you to show you how to effectively use this knowledge to
improve classroom practice and attainment.

Advanced Higher Mathematics Teaching and Learning and Marking Tips


Dougie Benzie - Glennifer High School, AH Maths Senior Setter

Dougie as advanced higher setter is going to share his wealth of experience in teaching and
delivering advanced higher maths to maximise attainment.

Gary is going to share with you his approach to the BGE focusing on mastery. They have been
working on this for almost two years now and are starting to see results.

In addition to her PT post at Todholme Primary, Lynne has been working as Development Officer
Numeracy in Renfrewshire for the last four years. Lynne is going to provide a snapshot of the
numeracy/maths developments in early years/ primary in the authority over the last few years and
provide us with information on how SEAL and Number Talks are having an impact in the primary.

My Maths
Trinity High School, Mathematics Department

Trinity High School maths department will share their approaches to using my maths software to
enhance teaching and learning in mathematics and improve parental engagement.

Workshop 13

Flipped Learning
Kirsty Davidson and Andrew Sutherland Renfrew high school

(NIF key priority Improvement in attainment in numeracy)

Flipped learning is a new ICT strategy that a great number of schools across authorities are adopting
to support and encourage pupils to take more responsibility for their own learning.

Kate has introduced this into Renfrew High school and will be demonstrating this along with A
Sutherland PT Maths.

Jenna, Clark, Paisley Grammar

Jenna has just recently moved to Renfrewshire Council from Midlothian. She brings with her a
wealth of experience and is going to share with us her tips on effective teaching and learning and
marking National 5 Mathematics.

Using Effective Differentiation in the maths Classroom to Meet the Needs of all Learners and

Dominic will share with us his approaches to delivering effective differentiation in the classroom and
