Public Service

send into the community young men and
women that have the potential for future
development and the character to assume

History
*Austin Jr. High was formerly located at what is
now CCTA
*The current campuss doors opened in 1930.
*A 103-foot bell tower crowns the campus.
* A mountain is the ONLY sustained
representation of any high school in El Paso
County.
*Robert E. Mckee built the school using Spanish
Mission architecture; the football stadium was
named for him as he donated the funds to build it.
*Elroy, a mounted panther, named after former
Austin writing teacher and famed west Texas
author, Elroy Bode, greets visitors as they enter the
building.
*Supreme Court Justice and alumnus, Sandra Day
OConnors accomplishments are honored in both
the Public Service Academy and New Tech
Program by integrating service learning into the
curriculum.
SDOA Panther New Tech
Trust, Respect, Responsibility (TRR) are the
pillars of Panther New Tech. TRR encompasses
the culture of the program to allow students and
facilitators to take ownership over multifaceted
learning experiences exercised in everyday life.
Students and facilitators collaborate in integrated
spaces and share leadership of the learning
community.
Why Panther New Tech?
Active learning environment: Through
lessons and projects that engage their hearts and
minds, students not only gain content knowledge,
but are also better able to apply what they know
and can do to new situations.
Building success skills for college,
career, and life: Students learn how to take
the initiative and have a sense of ownership as
classrooms, however, you take electives
they solve problems, work in teams,
communicate ideas, and manage themselves more
effectively.
Learning from experts from the field:
We provide real-world relevance for what
students are learning in their classes. The
centerpiece of Panther New Techs learning
experience is the collaboration with experts in the
public service community.
Myths About New Tech
Myth 1: New Tech is only for
smarter students. Truth: New Tech is
for everyone! We provide challenging and
rigorous academic to students who are
dedicated to be college-ready and career-
minded. The academics are challenging
and rigorous because they are based
around applying lessons to real-world
situations and not because the concepts are
out of reach for most people.
Myth 2: Project-based learning
means students are graded in
groups. Truth: While working with
others is essential to the New Tech
learning experience, students are also
graded on an individual basis. They are
evaluated on various learning outcomes
which measures their development of 21st
century skills. Our students also take
exams and quizzes to measure their
progress in each course.
Myth 3: You will not see your
friends who are not in New Tech.
Truth: You have all the core classes and
public service courses in New Tech
with the regular high school population
you also have lunch with all other
students!
