Dimmers
Why dim the lights

Regulating the light levels using dimmers creates comfort and to have right level
depending on mood and situation.
But dimming has other benefits as well. Energy saving through dimming is not often
understood. Still for example by dimming your lights, you reduce the voltage over the
lamp to 200V (~10%) gives an energy saving of 20%!!
If dimming would be used more regularly in both residential appliCations and in
building, the total savings in kWh would be significant.
A simple example illustrates this:
We have a 300W dimmer and load, which is the most common one. Average
dimming is 20% when in use. Average use per day in residential appliCation is 3
hours. Total electricity savings: 60W (20% dimmed down from 300W) x 365 days x 3
h/day = 65,7 kWh year. With an average European price of electricity of 0,16/kWh
this equals appr 10,50 savings and in CO savings 24,3 kgs which corresponds with
driving a car 125 kms.
Image the impact if you then would use 3-4 dimmers in your household or there
would be used at least 1 dimmer in each home in Europe!
Furthermore, dimming your incandescent or e.g. low voltage halogen lamps only
10-20% multiplies the lifetime for the lamps. Especially in case of e.g. halogen
lamps, both low voltage and 230V halogen lamps, this is important due to the usually
high price of the low voltage halogen lamps.
Main type of dimmers

There are today several different type and dimmer solutions, and often linked to the
type of lamp load they are controlling.
We distinguish today between mainly following dimmer types
Triac dimmers
The triac dimmers using a coil placed in the bottom of the dimmer. These dimmers
operate based on leading edge control and are usually used for control of resistive
and inductive loads like incandescent lamps, low voltage halogen lamps with iron
core transformer.
Triac dimmers may sometimes have a small humming sound which might be

regulating resistive loads like incandescent lamps and low Triac dimmers are usually equipped with separate exchangeable fuse in case of
voltage halogen lamps with iron core transformers short-circuits.
Transistor dimmers
Compared to the triac dimmers, the transistor dimmers have no coil. Instead the
dimming is based on using transistors. The transistor dimmers operate using trailing
edge control and are used for regulating resistive and capacitive loads like incandes-
cent lamps, 230V halogen lamps and low voltage halogen lamps using an electronic
transformer. The transistor dimmers are silent, have built-in electronic reversible
electronic fuse so there is no need to change fuse at short-circuit. When the cause
for the short-circuit is corrected, the dimmer operates normally again.
Trailing edge control with transistors is used for regulating
resistive loads like incandescent lamps and also capacitive Universal dimmers
loads like electronic transformers for low voltage halogen Universal dimmers are like the transistor dimmers in most features but the universal
lamps. This type of regulation is more or less dimmers are able to work in leading edge or trailing edge, depending on the load
they see. Therefore they can regulate either resistive and capacitive loads or
resistive and inductive loads (but not simultaneously capacitive and inductive loads).
1-10V dimming
The 1-10V controller is used for controlling fluorescent lamps with special electronic
ballast. The dimming is done in the ballast. Sometimes a 1-10 controller is also used
for regulating electronic transformers for low voltage halogen lamps but this depends
on the transformer.
Dimming with Dali
Dali or Digital Addressable Light Interface is a digital lighting control system allowing
addressing of mainly the electronic ballasts. The dimming is based on similar 1-10V
regulating as above.
Advantages compared to 1-10V dimming:

Multi channelling use
No mains switching needed
Back channelling enables information feedback from the fittings.

Dimmers
Dimming and different type of lamps

When you want to dim a lamp it is essential to know the lamp type and whether it is
possible to dim. Knowing the lamp type also allows you to choose right dimmer for
the lamp type.
Incandescent lamps
Incandescent lamps are still the most common lamp types on the market and are
available usually from 25W up to 75W. Earlier also 100W was available in Europe
but the new EU regulations have banned them and in a few years we can anticipate
that they unfortunately will disappear from at least the European market.
The incandescent lamps can be dimmed with most dimmers, especially the leading
and trailing edge dimmers. Dimming is normally easy and without and problems in
form of flickering etc.
Halogen lamps
Halogen lamps are available in both as 12V versions using a transformer or as 230V
versions which are directly connected to the mains.
Low voltage halogen lamps, 12V
These lamps are always using a transformer, either electronic, or conventional ones
like iron core or toroidal transformers.
When regulating the lights, the dimmer actually regulate the transformer.
LV halogen lamps with an electronic transformer are regulated with a trailing edge
dimmer. The electronic transformer usually gives a better and more even light which
also dont flicker.
The conventional transformers like an iron core and toroidal transformer requires a
leading edge dimmer for light regulation.
The conventional transformers are usually cheaper than electronic transformers
but e.g. the toroidal transformers are more difficult for the dimmer due to the high
start-up current.
Note! Always ensure first that the transformer is dimmable. Sometimes the trans-
former is not designed for dimming and trying to regulate will cause disturbance in
the regulation of the halogen lamps. Especially toroidal transformers may often not
be dimmable
Halogen lamps, 230V
The 230V halogen lamps are regulated directly from the dimmer. The dimming scale
is the same as for incandescent lamps. Since the start-up current is slightly higher for
230V halogen lamps than for incandescent lamps, it is recommended that the
dimmer max load is bigger than the
halogen lamps Watt rating. The 230V halogen lamps can be dimmed with both
trailing and leading edge dimmers.
When replacing incandescent lamps with less energy consuming lamps, the 230V
halogen lamps are strongly recommended instead of CFL lamps due to the better
dimming and better colour reproduction.
Compact fluorescent tubes
Compact fluorescent are in practice normal fluorescent tubes and operates in same
way.
There are several versions of these lamps and available with 2- or 4-pole pin. The
2-pin versions can usually not be dimmed but the 4-pin can be dimmable if the lamp
fixture is designed to be dimmed. In such case the regulating is usually done using
some special electronic ballast with a 1-10V input.
CFL - Compact Fluorescent Lamps
The compact fluorescent lamps, or generally referred to CFLs, are available both as
standard versions and as dimmable. Generally the CFLs are assumed to take over
after incandescent lamps are phased out, but their strong period on the market is
estimated to be only 3-5 years, after which LED lamps are forecasted to replace
them.
According to interpretation of current valid standards and norms CFLs are not
allowed to be dimmed, even if they would be dimmable with a dimmer, mainly
because of the interference on the harmonics. However, these standards are expect-
ed to change within the coming years.
Dimming of dimmable CFLs is generally difficult due to lack of common standards.
One dimmer may work well with one dimmable CFL but very badly with another
manufacturers CFL.
Often but not always a leading edge dimmer works with a dimmable CFL better than
trailing edge dimmers.
The light level is usually not possible to dim as much as in e.g. incandescent lamps.
Today there are dimmers for special loads which work with dimmable CFLs but it is
better to ensure that the dimmer manufacturer lists which type of dimmable CFLs
have been verified to work with the dimmer.

Standard fluorescent tubes

There are today several different fluorescent tubes available on the market. Below is
listed only the most common ones.
T8 26 mm tubes
The 26 mm fluorescent tubes use electronic ballast which controls the fluorescent
tubes. First it needs to be ensured that the ballast is dimmable since not all are
dimmable. Most common way of regulate the lights of a dimmable electronic ballast
is using 1-10V controller. However, some older electronic ballast on the market may
still be found which can be dimmed using leading edge dimmers.
T5 16 mm tubes
The T5 fluorescent tubes are reasonably new on the market are used often for more
design orientated lamp fixtures due to its thin diameter of only 16 mm. The T5
fluorescent tubes can often be dimmed, normally by 1-10V control, Dali or using
other digital solutions.
LED lamps
A more recent lamp type is Light Emitting Diodes (or usually called LEDs), which
also are very energy efficient with a consumption of 5-7W per lamp. Since the LED
lamps are developing in a rapid pace and the Lumen they generate increases every
year, they are nowadays considered to be the lamp type which will replace CFLs
within a few years. Today the LED lamps are also available with E27 base, which
means that more and more they are used for replacing incandescent lamps. When
regulating LED lamps we have very much the same type of problems as with CFLs.
The lack of common standards means that depending on LED type and manufac-
turer dimming quality varies. Today some manufacturers also indiCate on the LED
lamp if it is for dimming or not.
The LED lamps available today are usually either with a base like E27, E14 or other,
with the driver built in, or LED lamps with an own separate driver, like a low voltage
halogen lamps transformer. The last one is usually dimmed using 1-10V regulation
or digital dimming like Dali etc. Dimming is in other words possible sometimes with
e.g. a leading edge (triac) dimmer but this needs for the moment be checked from
case to case.
Motors
Regulating small motors of asynchrony types in fans and similar devices
are often done with use of a dimmer dediCated for this type of regulating.
If the dimmer can regulate this type of motors, it is clearly indiCated on
the dimmer with the symbol M
The Schneider motor regulating dimmers always start from fulleffect when the
rotary knob is turned, which is for the motor the best way to start it.

Some final words about regulating light levels

of dimmable CFLs
Although dimmable lamps can be dimmed their behaviour varies widely and can be
not in line with costumers expectations.
The dimmable CFLs may not start properly when set to a dimmed level of about 50%
or less. If a lamp is turned on at a low level and flickers or flashes, the lamp life is
reduced dramatically. Often lamps can not be dimmed lower than about 40%.
Some new dimmable CFLs are of the step dimming type. This means a regular
light switch can be turned on and off to dim the lamp up or down in preset steps.
These types are not usable for use with dimmers but they shall be controlled by a
regular light switch.
Sometimes when the switch is turned off, the lamp does not turn off. This is most
probably due to the sticking of the switch contacts. The high inrush current gener-
ated by the lamps when switched on can cause this sticking. If the contact sticks, you
need to have this replaced.
Therefore we recommend that in existing installations, should be used the energy
efficient halogen lamps in combination with dimmers and other electronic switches
as these lamps are in line with the current EU regulation and are easy to dim.
Energy efficient halogen lamps are approximately 30%-50% more energy efficient
than conventional incandescent lamps and last twice as long. This is not fully as
good as the CFLs which can reach 60-80% energy savings compared to incandes-
cent lamps. On the other hand, the 230V halogen lamps with E27 installation base
cost only 1/3 of that of a dimmable CFL.
The halogen lamps switch on without delay and colour rending of the light is
comparable with conventional incandescent lamps.
Finally, from an environmental point of view the halogen lamps are much more
environmental friendly than the CFLs since they contain much less environmentally
harmful substances.
When used with electronic controls and dimmers, they can generate even more
energy savings.
Things to remember when installing and using dimmers

Heat dissipation and down rating
The nominal applicable load is valid at an ambient temperature up to 35C. Above
this temperature the load that may be connected to the dimmer needs to be reduced
to ensure operation in a safe way.

How do dimmers Save energy?

The triac or FET is the Key to dimming, this dimmer component actually turns light on
and off very rapidly 100 times per second. The longer the triac is off, the lower the
light output, and the greater the energy savings. Schneider dimmers pay for
themselves.
If the lights are being turned on and off, wont the lights seem to be flickering?
No matter how bright or dim, the light level is constant and smooth. The human eye
has a built in persistence to see things after they go away. An example of this is in
movies where the film is projected on the screen many times a second.
Doesnt turning the lights on and off quickly reduce lamp life?
No. Heat decreases lamp life. By reducing heat, lamp life is increased.
Does dimming affect halogen lamp life?
Yes. Dimming increases incandescent lamp life. Halogen lamps are incandescent
lamps with a tungsten filament. Test data suggests that halogen lamps will have an
expected lamp life similar to other incandescent lamps when dimmed.
Why do dimmers get warm, and is this safe?
During normal operation, solid-state dimmers generate heat. A solid dimmer is
roughly 98% efficient -2% of the power dissipates as heat, causing the dimmer to
feel warm to the touch. The closer a dimmer is run to full output and the higher the
load (watts) on the dimmer, the warmer it will feel. This is perfectly normal and safe.
Why does my lamp buzz?
Occasionally, you may sometimes notice that a lamp is buzzing. This is caused by
the lamp filament vibration as the dimmer rapidly switches the lamp on and off. Lamp
buzz is generally noisiest at the mid-range (50%) dimming level. If this happens, use
rough service lamps (sometimes called garage door opener lamps), physically
smaller lamps, or lower wattage lamps.
Why do my lights flash or suddenly change levels?
You may be experiencing a common neutral interaction. Common neutral interaction
is cross talk between dimmers that share the same neutral wire. This may cause the
lights to flicker, flash or suddenly change intensity. When solid-state dimmers are
operating, voltage spikes occur and are transmitted onto the neutral wire.

Why movement and presence detectors?

Movement detectors are today becoming more and more common. In the beginning
movement detectors were used mainly outdoors and for controlling your garden,
entrance lights etc, with the main drivers being comfort and security. The lights were
switched on when you arrived to your home when it was dark and in case some
unknown person approached your house the lights were switched on.
Today movement detectors, or PIRs as they are often called, are standard installa-
tion products, used not only installed outdoor for comfort and security but also used
indoors on the wall in wiring device design ranges or in the ceiling. New benefits
seen by the customers are the energy saving created by using PIRs to automatically
switch on and off the lights depending on if someone is present or passes the
detectors detection zones.
Energy saving with movement/presence detectors

In the next 50 years from now, the energy demand will double while CO2 emissions
should be divided by 2. Electrical energy represents roughly half of the end energy
usage and electricity is key in the control of other energy usage.
Energy use reduction and management will be a continued focus of policy makers.
Electrical and thermal energy costs are very significantly increasing but very
measures are installed to properly assess the consumption by usage, by energy
type, by facility.
Robust automation, control and monitoring of energy usage can deliver up to 30%
energy savings and significantly contribute to CO2 emissions reduction.
One possibility for saving electrical energy is the installation of movement / presence
detectors (or twilight switches) mainly for lighting and HVAC control.
Movement and presence detectors are the most common SAE devices for achieving
easily energy savings without compromising on your comfort. In fact you combine
comfort with energy savings. The lights are switched on and off according to actual
need of lights. If the natural light is strong enough, the detector does not switch on
the lights unnecessary. Furthermore, the detector never forgets to switch off the
lights if no one is present.
Type of indoor movement detectors

We distinguish today between two main types of PIRs which is based on the
performance.
A presence detector is more sensitive is usually capable to detect a person sitting at

e.g. a desk doing normal office work. The movements required for detection are
small, sometimes moving your head from one side to another may be sufficient,
sometimes a little more is required. There is no standard for required movement in
order to be able to call a detector a presence (or occupancy) detector and the
performance between different manufacturers detectors varies also a lot.
Presence detectors are therefore recommended for office rooms etc where detection
is not depending on a movement like walking etc.
A movement detector requires a movement through the zones. Optimal movement

detection is only provided if the detector is installed laterally with respect to the
detection range (movements and segments are perpendicular).
Therefore movement detectors are best suitable for corridors and toilets where you
pass the detector zones.

About the technology in the movement detectors

You can say that there are two technologies in one movement detector product
Movement detection part: based on Passive Infra-Red (PIR) technology, the
sensor detects movement in a sensing zone (therefore we often talk about PIRs
as the product although it just one technology among others for movement and
presence detection)
Brightness sensor and detection part: comparison of the ambient light to a
predefined minimum level
Combination of Movement detection + Insufficient Brightness = Light automati-
cally switched on for a set time period.
These two technologies results in a movement detector automatically controlling

your lights.
The brightness sensor defines if the light level for activating or not the detector, if the
PIR sensor has detected a movement. This way the detector does not turn on the
lights if the daylight is on a level where you dont need artificial lights.
Infra-red movement detection part - Basic Principle:

A Passive Infra-Red (PIR) sensor:
1 st step: measures infra-red (IR) radiation emitted by objects (& walls) in its sensing
zone without the presence of people.
2 nd step: apparent motion is detected when an infra-red source with another
temperature, such as a human, passes in the sensing zone.
Passive means that the PIR device does not emit an infra-red beam but simply
receives incoming infra-red radiation, passively.
