Design of Truss Bridge ( 38m Span )

Description of Bridge Structure

One Truss Bridge of 38m span is provided at one end ( Rajeev Lochan Temple side) in Rajim. Analysis
has been carried out by STAAD Pro software. Design data and Load cases considered are as follow.

Design Data

1 Span of Bridge 38 m
2 Height of Bridge 5 m
3 Passage Width 3.25 m
4 Live Load 5 kN/m2 ( Pedetrian Loading )
5 Wind Velocity 39 m/s
6 Seismic Zone II
7 Reference IS Code IS875, IS1893 ( Part 3 ) , IRC 6 : 2014
Loads

Dead load
Self weight of structure is applied by SELFWEIGHT command.
A chequered plate of 5mm thk weight is applied.
= 0.00525 x 78.5 = 0.412 kN/m2

Live load
A load of 5kN/m2 is applied on carrigeway width.

Wind Load Reference IRC 6 :2014

Table 5 For plain Terrain and Height 20m

Hourly mean wind Speed (Vz) = (30.30 / 33) x 39 = 35.81 m/s

Design wind Pressure Pz 0.6 = 0.77 kN/m2

Clause 209.3.3 Force in Transverse direction

Gust factor G = 2
Annex C : Table C1 Cd = 1.9

Pressure in Transverse direction P= 2.92

Considered Pressure = 2.92 kN/m2 for Truss design.

Total Wind force = 401 kN ( From STAAD Pro )

Seismic load Reference IS1893 ( Part 3 : 2014 )

Clause 9.2

From STAAD Pro results -

Total DL = 280 kN
Total LL = 604 kN
In seismic calculation , 50% of live load has been considered as seismic mass.
W = 280 + 0.5 x 604 = 582 kN

Clause 9.4.1

Zone 2 Z= 0.10
Table 2 I = 1.2
Table 3 R = 1 ( For super structure )
Fig. 1 Sa/g = 2.5
Ah = 0.15
So,
Fh = 87 kN

Total Seismic Force = 87 kN

Wind Force is greater than Seismic Force, So seismic force is not applied in STAAD Pro software.

Temperature load Refer IRC 6: 2014 - Fig. 8 & Fig. 9

Change in temperature is considered as 45*c.

Load Combinations :

IRC 6 Clause 209.3.7 The bridges shall not be considered to be carrying any live load when
the wind speed at deck level exceeds 36 m/s.

Following Load combinations are considered as per IS 875 Part 5 .

LOAD COMB 201 DL

LOAD COMB 202 DL+LL
LOAD COMB 203 DL + WIND Z+
LOAD COMB 204 DL + WIND X+
LOAD COMB 205 DL + WIND UP
LOAD COMB 206 DL+TEMP
LOAD COMB 207 DL + WIND Z+ + TEMP
LOAD COMB 208 DL + WIND X+ + TEMP
LOAD COMB 209 DL + WIND UP + TEMP
LOAD COMB 210 DL + LL + TEMP

As per IRC 6 : 2014 , 33% increse in permissible stress is allowed for wind load and its
combinations with other loads.

Results :
Sections provided are satisfactory for all load combinations considered.
