TAGISAN NG TALINO AT GALING 2012

CONTEST MECHANICS
I. GENERAL MECHANICS
The 12th Annual Tagisan ng Talino at Galing is open for all public and private high
schools from Occidental and Oriental Mindoro.
Each delegation shall be composed of the following:

Three (3) student participants for the Tagisan ng Talino (Quiz Bee);
One (1) student participant for the Poster Making Contest;
One (1) student participant for the Impromptu Speaking Contest (English) and (1)
student participant for the Impromptu Speaking Contest (Filipino);
One (1) student participant for the Essay Writing Contest (English) and (1) student
participant for the Essay Writing Contest (Filipino); and,
One (1) adviser to serve as official coach.
A delegation may send participants other than those mentioned above, i.e.
observers, substitute contestants and adviser/s.

A reply form will be given to each school that they could send back to the organizers
through mail, email, call or SMS on or before October 19, 2012.
There will be a registration fee of Php 75.00 per head for each member of the
delegation (including observers, substitute and advisers). Receipts will be issued.

II. CONTEST-SPECIFIC MECHANICS


Each contestant must be a bona fide student of the high school s/he is representing.
The contestants are requested to wear their respective school uniforms and IDs
during the contest proper.
A. Quiz Bee
The contest will be a team competition. Each school must send three (3) official
contestants per team. Only one (1) team shall represent each school.
Elimination Round

Each team member will be provided with the necessary materials, (i.e. pens,
markers, boards, scratch papers, etc.)
The elimination round will be composed of thirty (30) questions (10 questions per
level of difficulty). The easy questions are worth one (1) point each. The average
questions are worth three (3) points each and the difficult questions are worth five
(5) points each.
Questions will be taken from the following fields:
o SCIENCE which will include Biology, Chemistry, Physics and General
Science;
o MATHEMATICS which will cover Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry and
Statistics;
o HISTORY which will include that of the world, Asia, Philippines and
Mindoro; and,
o GENERAL INFORMATION which will include arts and literature, current
events and pop culture.
Team members will answer the questions individually. They will also be scored
individually.
The quizmaster will read each question twice. The contestants may begin writing
their answers only after the quizmaster says GO. The contestants will be given ten
(10) seconds to write their answer/s unless specified otherwise.
At the end of the round, the scores of the three team members will be added to
determine the team score.
The top 50% teams will qualify for the semi final round.
In case of a tie, each team member shall answer three (3) clincher questions.
Individual scores will be added to get the team score and thus determine who
qualified. If there is still a tie, one (1) question shall be asked at a time until a
qualifying team emerges.
Scores will be carried over to the final round.
Semi-Final Round
During this round, team members will answer as one team.
The semi-final round shall be composed of three sets of questions. The first set shall
be composed of fifteen easy questions worth five (5) points. The second set shall
consist of ten (10) average questions worth seven (7) points each. The last set on
the other hand shall include five difficult questions worth ten (10) points each.
Rules in reading questions and in writing answers in the elimination round shall
apply in the semi-final round.
The top three teams at the end of this round shall qualify for the final round.
Scores will be carried over to the final round.
Final Round
Team members will answer as one team. The final round will be a buzzer-match
competition between qualified teams.
Fifteen (15) questions worth ten (10) points shall be asked. The questions will come
from the four fields mentioned earlier.
The quizmaster will read each question twice. The team who pushes the buzzer first
will be given the chance to answer the question. The answer must be given within
five (5) seconds after the quizmasters acknowledgement.
A team may interrupt the quizmaster to signify intention to answer. However, if no
team interrupts, a ten-second limit, unless specified otherwise, will be given before
that particular question is considered unanswered.
In case of an incorrect answer, other teams shall have the time to steal with the
remaining time of the question.
An answer given before the acknowledgement will mean a warning. The second
offense will mean disqualification from answering the particular question. Answers,
once given, cannot be changed.
The team which garners the highest score at the end of this round shall be declared
as the winner, the second highest as the first runner-up and the third as the second
runner-up.
In case of a tie, rule 5 of the elimination round shall be applied.
Any protest/s or question/s must be made by the adviser and should be addressed
to the Technical Panel. It should be done during the round concerned. No protest/s
shall be entertained, otherwise, and while answering time is in effect.
* The contest mechanics for the quiz bee competition shall be subject to
change depending on the number of participating teams.
B. Poster Making Contest
The contest is an individual competition. Each school must send one (1) official
contestant.

The event organizers will provide the canvass material (illustration board), while all
other materials (coloring materials, pencils, rulers, etc.) shall be provided by the
contestants.
Once the topic is given, the contestants would be given a maximum of two (2) hours
to complete their entries. Failure to submit works on time would be a detriment.
Contestants are encouraged to come up with fresh ideas and designs. Certain
elements/drawings such as dove, hand, globe with hands, Philippine flag AND
people in kapit-bisig around the globe are DISCOURAGED.
Entries will be judged according to the following criteria:
Concept/Idea 40%
Design Composition 30%
Originality 20%
Design Impact 10%
Total 100%
C. Impromptu Speaking Contest
The contest is an individual competition. Each school must send one (1) official
contestant.

The time limit is five (5) minutes maximum for each speech. There will be no
minimum time limit. Brevity should be penalized only if it discloses a lack of
knowledge of the subject or a lack of a complete speech. Overtime will be a
detriment.
Topics will be announced to the contestants individually. The first speaker will be
called into the room; the topic will be announced to her/him and s/he shall be given
sixty (60) seconds to prepare. Then the speech should be delivered. When s/he is
finished, the next speaker will be called into the room and will follow the above
procedures. Speakers must stay in the room until the round is completed. They
should not leave after they have delivered their speech.
The speaker should be judged for her/his ability to think in her/his own feet. S/He is
judged for the continuity of the speech and the material s/he is able to call forth on
the spur of the moment and mold that information into a logical speech. The speaker
would also be judged on the mechanics of the speech poise, quality and use of
voice, body action and the ability to hold the attention of the audience. The student
should be penalized if he or she does not stay within the time limit.

Topics, anchored on the events theme, will be: a word, a saying or a current event.
No specific order of topics will be announced.
D. Essay Writing Contest
The contest is an individual competition. Each school must send one (1) official
contestant.

The time limit is two (2) hours for all the contestants. A minimum of five hundred
(500) words and a maximum of one thousand (1000) words shall be implemented.
The event organizers will provide the writing material (ruled paper) for the
contestants.
Topics will be announced to the contestants at once. It will be in a form of word, a
saying or a current event, which will be in a form of question. It will then be
discussed by the contestants based on the following criteria:

Syntax 10%
