1. Please read your learning guide!
New requirements exist for mandatory reporters in NSW from October 2016. Many
department websites such as DEC are out of date at this time and will result in a
resubmit.

2. Teachers/Educators you must follow mandatory reporter requirements. I.e. you are
not required to inform your principal or supervisor prior to reporting. You may report
directly to the reporters line. This is particularly relevant if the allegation involves the
supervisor or a conflict of interest could occur. This includes teachers in state and
Private School. This is to ensure the safety of children and information is acted
upon.

Resubmits: Please re-submit your assessment by adding your additional information to


your marked assessment. Please leave assessors comments and highlights. Please
resubmit using the guide. This is located under the assessment submission box on your
moodle page.
NOTE: Only 3 attempts (i.e. two resubmits allowed) prior to re-enrollment being required.

Protecting Childrens Rights

a. Provide 2 examples outlining how you can ensure the safety of children in your
service/organisation and safeguard their rights.

b. Identify 1 strategy you could use to help a new staff member incorporate the
practice of safeguarding children into your centre.

c. As Educators and child-related professionals, we use child-focused practices. For


example:
i. Positive communication skills
ii. Engaging children and young people
iii. Awareness and sensitivity

Identify 1 child-focused practice/experience you would use to inform children of their


right to be safe and involve them in decision making (e.g. help them identify when
they are not safe and strategies to stay safe).

b. Please list the ROSH (Risk of significant harm) threshold for your state or territory.

This means the circumstances or types of abuse which should be reported to child
protection in your state or territory. Please note these will vary depending on where
you live. Use your learning guide or mandatory reporters guide/child protection
website for your state or territory. (Do not use DEC or other governing body websites
as they may not have correct information and may result in a resubmit).

L was climbing on the ladder using his left arm. His right arm was down next to his
side. I said Use your other hand to help balance. He said I cant it hurts. I asked
L to show me and asked him to bend his arm. L made an attempt to bend his arm
and said Ouch I cant. I looked at his elbow and could see that it was swollen,
red and what appeared to be adult size bite mark. I asked How did you hurt your
arm? L stated Mummy did it. I asked What happened. He stated Mummy bit
me cause she was angry at me I asked Why was she angry? L replied cause I
wasnt a good listener.

a. A parent has disclosed to you that they are currently homeless and have been
sleeping in their car. Identify one specific agency in your state or territory that you
could refer the family to for support. You are welcome to google services in your
area.

Part 5: Ethical Dilemmas

1. Ali 3.5 years and Han 2.3 years and their family have just enrolled at your service. They
have been in Australia for 4 months. On orientation, Ali and Hans father, Raj, reports that
You may hit Ali if she does not do the right thing, but you are not to touch my son Han, he is
the male and should be honoured.

a. Read the scenario above and identify two ethical dilemmas that may occur for you
as a professional in relation to this incident.

b. What would you say to Raj in regards to his requests above in accordance with your
centres policies and procedures and any relevant legislation?

c. In regards to these ethical concerns above, who would you seek support from either
within in your service and why would you do this?

d. How would you respond to unethical behaviour of others in your service?

2. List 3 possible ethical concerns which may occur in your role when working with children
and young people and their families (e.g. child rearing practices, some cultures avoid eye
contact).

Ashlee aged 4.2 years attends your child care centre 3 times per week. You have noticed
that she has been very withdrawn lately and is very conscious of her body when she goes to
the toilet. You notice that when she goes to the toilet she sometimes cries that it hurts when
wiping her bottom. When you are supervising the bathroom, you notice Ashlee has large
bruises on her bottom. When you help her wash her hands and push her sleeves up, you
notice she has bruises and scratches on her arm. Ashlee looks at you with a worried face and
says Dont tell mummy, Im scared because she might hit me with the broom again.

a. What would you say immediately in response to Ashlees comments?

tell you anything. He says, She keeps touching my penis and she wants me to put it on her.
You are best friends with Marcy and have worked with her for the past 4 years.
