MT-203: Ordinary Differential Equations

(Spring 2016)
Assignment02
Instructor: Dr. Syed Irfan Shah
Instructions:
1. Each student must individually attempt thisassignment.
2. Copying someone elses solution or providing your solution to someone
else, willsimply lead to zero marks forboth.
3. This is the practice assignment for preparation of Mids.

Due Date: 24th Feb-2016

1.) When a chicken is removed from a baking oven its temperature is measured at 300F.
Three minutes later its temperature is 200F. How long will it take to cool off to room
temperature of 70F?
2.) The population of a community is known to increase at a rate proportional to the number
of people present at time t. If an initial population P0 has doubled in 4 years, how long
will it take to triple?
3.) Let population of a country be decreasing at a rate proportional to its population. If the
population has decreased to 25% in 10 year, how long will it take to be half?
4.) Suppose that we have an aircraft, say a piece of fossilized wood, and measurements show
that the ratio of C-14 to carbon in the sample is 37% of the current ratio. Let us assume
that the wood died at time 0, then compute the time T it would take for one gram of the
radioactive carbon to decay this amount.
5.) A tank contains 300 liters of fluid in which 20 grams of salt are dissolved. Brine
containing 1 gram of salt per liter is then pumped into the tank at a rate of 4 L/min; the
well-mixed solution is pumped out at the same rate. Find the numberN(t)of grams of salt
in the tank at time t.
6.)
7.)

8.) Solve the following Bernoulli differential equations:

9.) Find the solution of the equation:

4xy 3x dx 2 y 2x dy 0
2 2 dy xy 2 1

dx 1 x 2 y
; given that y = 1 when x = 0.

dy x y cos x

dx y sin x

10.)
dy
(a) Solve: x y 2x 2 y
dx
dy y 2 1
(b)Find the general solution of: .
dx x 2 1
(c)Solve: 3x( y 2 1)dx y( x 2 2)dy 0 .

(d) Solve: 2 y cos x dx 3 sin x dy 0 ; given y2 2 .
