Introduction to Solar Photovoltaic

Solar Photovoltaic system is classified into 3 types

Grid connected systems (net metering)
Off-grid systems (requires battery)
Hybrid systems.

Grid connected systems:-

A grid-connected photovoltaic power system or grid-connected PV power
system is an electricity generating solar PV power system that is connected to
the utility grid. A grid-connected PV system consists of solar panels, one or
several inverters, and grid connection equipment. They range from small
residential and commercial rooftop systems to large utility-scale solar power
stations. When conditions are right, the grid-connected PV system supplies the
excess power, beyond consumption by the connected load, to the utility grid.

Components:-
1. Solar panel,
2. A.C. distribution box
3. D.C. distribution box
4. Inverter
5. Cables and cable trays etc.

Grid connected PV system

Off-grid systems:-
Off grid solar system uses a battery to store the electricity generated through
the panel and to supply that electricity whenever require. Except battery and
net meter rest of all components are same as grid connected systems.

Off-grid PV system

Hybrid solar systems:-

Hybrid solar systems combine the best from grid-tied and off-grid solar
systems. These systems can either be described as off-grid solar with utility
backup power, or grid-tied solar with extra battery storage.

Hybrid PV system
Components and their function in solar PV

Solar panel

Converts radiation energy from the sun into the electricity.

D.C. distribution box

Electrical energy from solar panel is received by D.C. distribution box where it
passes through Fuse, Surge protection device (SPD).

Fuse

If the current from the panel is more than the Impp value then fuse does not
allow that over current to pass through it and thus protects the device.

Surge Protection Device (SPD)

In case of electrical surges and spikes Surge Protection Device attempts to

limit the over voltage supplied to an electrical circuit and thus protects the device.

Inverter

To convert D.C. energy supply to A.C. supply which we utilize for home.
A.C. Distribution box

A.C. supply from the inverter is received by the A.C. distribution box where it
passes through Miniature Circuit Breaker and Surge Protection Device again.

Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB)

It is a circuit breaker which isolates the electrical circuit from the solar panel in
case of abnormal conditions or faulty conditions like short circuit.

Net Energy meter (for grid connected system)

Energy meter is replaced by this Net Energy Meter which measures the
electrical energy generated and consumed.

Battery (off-grid system)

To store the charge generated by the solar panel.

Electric cables

For making connections between the solar panels, DC distribution box,

Inverter, AC distribution box & Net meter etc.
Stepwise Procedure to Install Solar PV System
1. At very first get consumer number & BU code of customer which is there in
his electricity bill.

2. Go to Mahavitaran website, select view/pay bill option. It will ask for

consumer no. and BU code, just enter these two numbers and we will get
month wise unit consumption of customer in kw-hr.

3. Select the proper location for installation of solar PV at site.

4. Calculate the total capacity of solar PV required to be installed.

5. Give application to MSEB for getting permission for installation of grid

connected solar PV (net metering) and if the sanction load is less than the total
solar PV load then do the request to MSEB to raise the sanction load.

6. Apply for subsidy to MEDA (Maharashtra Energy Development Agency).

7. Design and fabrication of solar PV panel mounting structure.

8. Installation and commissioning of solar PV.

Solar PV Installation Case Study
Step 1:- At very first get consumer number & BU code of customer which
is there in his electricity bill.
Customer name: - Mr. Suhas Gopal Shukla

Address: - Plot no. 27A, sr. no. 722A/5/27 Sahajeevan colony, Vise mala, Nasik-
422001.

Connection type: - LT

Consumer number: - 049016702918

BU code: - 4253 Satpur S/DN.

Step 2:- Go to Mahavitaran website, select view/pay bill option. It will ask
for consumer no. and BU code just enter these two numbers and we will
get month wise unit consumption of customer in kw-hr.

Step: - 3 select the proper location for installation of solar PV at site.

Following points we have taken into consideration while selecting the location for
solar PV installation.

East, west, north, south directions at site location.

Direction of sun path i.e. from east to west.
Solar panels are always mounted towards south because sun movement is from
east to west, if panels are towards north then there will be shadow on the
panels which is of no use.
Because of tall tank structure there was problem of shadow which may fall on
the panels so we decided to make a structure of tank height and then mount
panles on it.
Also we did the shadow analysis in Google sketch-up. We have drawn the
entire structure with panels and all and we have studied at what time of the
day, where the shadow is and whether it is falling on the panels or not. We
came to know that there is no shadow falling on the panels for the entire
sunshine hours and that is what we want.

At 8.30 a.m. At 9.30 a.m.

At 10.30 a.m. At 11.30 a.m.

At 12.30 p.m. At 1.30 p.m.

Step: - 4 calculate the total capacity of solar PV required to be installed.

1. Calculate the yearly consumption of customer by adding 12 month units (kw-

hr).

2. So the total consumption for 12 months is,

a. 23+284+337+268+312+.................+389 = 4158 units in one year.

3. Now 1 kW solar PV panel generates 1440 units/year.

4. So the total capacity of solar PV required to be install can be calculated as,

4158/1450 which is equal to 2.8875 kW.

This is how we calculated the capacity solar PV required to be installed.

Step: - 5 Give application to MSEB for getting permission for installation
of grid connected solar PV (net metering) and if the sanction load is less
than the total solar PV load then do the request to MSEB to raise the
sanction load.
1. We gave application to MSEB for getting permission for installation of grid
connected solar PV (net metering).
2. Let us assume that our sanction load is 7.5 kW for single phase and the solar
PV load that is to be installed is more than that then, we have to request MSEB
to raise the sanction load and get 3 phase supply.*****

Step: - 6 we applied for subsidy to MEDA (Maharashtra Energy

Development Agency)
MEDA i.e. Maharashtra Energy Development Agency is offering subsidy
of Rs. 18300 per kW. Now that scheme is going to end on 25 th july 2017
because government decided to run that scheme for 18 months only.
But we started project on 5th of June 2017 so we applied for subsidy to
MEDA and customer received Rs. 52704 for 2.88 kW.
Step: - 7 Design and fabrication of solar PV panel mounting structure.
As shown in following image we made the design of the structure and fabricated the
same at site.
Step: - 8 installation and commissioning of solar PV.
1. Installation and commissioning includes mounting of solar panels on solar
mounting structure, installation of D.C. distribution box, A.C. distribution box,
inverter and their wiring connections.
2. Installation of Net meter which is require for net metering purpose and wiring
connection of net meter to solar PV output from AC distribution box.
3. Earthing connections: -
a) Structure earthing.
b) DC distribution box earthing.
c) Inverter and AC distribution box earthing.
4. Checking for electricity generation i.e. whether the system is producing require
power output (voltage and current) or not, how much units panels are
generating per day and how much consumed etc.
