EXERCISE 2.2
DETERMINATION OF THE AVERAGE DIFFERENCE IN ELEVATION
OF THE HIGHEST BLENCHER & THE COURT FLOOR
TITLE

I. OBJECTIVES
To determine the difference in elevation of the highest blencher from the court floor.

II. PROCEDURE
Set up the instrument at point 0 on the ground (particularly we put it on the stage).
Set up a point on the highest left blencher. Designate the point as A.
Position the leveling rod/ stadia at point A making sure that the rod is straight. Use a plumb
bob if possible to achieve the right position of the rod.
With the transit leveled at point 0, sight the upper and lower cross hair reading (a and b) as
long as the middle reading also and record these data.
Transfer the leveling rod/stadia at the left court floor on the line, designate it as point B and
repeat the same process.
Relocate the leveling rod/stadia at the highest right blencher, designate it at point D.
Replace the stadia at designating point C on the right court floor.
Tabulate all observed data accordingly.

III. MATERIALS/EQUIPMENTS
Transit
Stadia/Leveling Rod

V. FIELD MEASUREMENT DATA

VI. CALCULATION
Assume that the stadia constant is zero (0).
From the previous activity, k=99.762

At point A
VD1 = ks1cos1 sin1 + c sin1
VD1 = 99.762(0.537-0.283)(cos 1031)(sin 1031) + 0(sin 1031)
VD1 = 4.547m
At point B
VD2 = ks2cos2 sin2 + c sin2
VD2 = 99.762(1.992-1.782)(cos 0)(sin 0) + 0(sin 0)
VD2 = 0m
At point C

VD3 = ks3cos3 sin3 + c sin3

VD3 = 99.762(2.031-1.792)(cos 0)(sin 0) + 0(sin 0)
VD3 = 0m
At point D
VD4 = ks4cos4 sin4 + c sin4
VD4 = 99.762(1.664-1.382)(cos 930)(sin 930) + 0(sin 930)
VD4 = 4.580m
From the point A and B, the difference in elevation base from figure 1
DEab=VD1-RR1+RR2 ; since VD2 is zero.
DEab=4.547m-0.410m+1.887m
DEab= 6.024m
From the point D and C, the difference in elevation base from figure 2
DEdc=VD4-RR4+RR3 ; since VD3 is also zero.
DEdc=4.580m-1.523m+1.912m
DEdc= 4.969m
Therefore the average difference in elevation of the highest blencher from the court floor is
DEab+DEdc
DE= 2
6.024m+4.969m
DE= 2

DE= 5.497m

VII. OBSERVATION
Im very curious about the DEab and DEdc, the difference is almost 1m. I dont know
why but when Im checking my solution, it is also correct. Maybe something personal error
that implements in the activity.

From the activity, indirect measurement is very suitable in measuring high distant
building that the stadia cannot carry out the length. It is an advantage of the surveyor or
student to use indirect measurement rather than direct measurement for them to exert less
effort especially in getting the elevation of a certain building or getting the difference in
elevation.
