EXERCISE 2.1
DETERMINATION OF STADIA INTERVAL FACTOR
TITLE

I. OBJECTIVE
To determine the Stadia Interval Factor of the Engineers Transit.

II. PROCEDURE
Set up the instrument at point 0 on the ground where a horizontal sight can be obtained up to
a distance of 70m.
Set up at least six (6) points along the horizontal line of sight such that the first point is 20m
away from the instrument and the succeeding point are 10m apart. Designate the points as d1,
d2, d3, d4, d5, and d6 respectively.
Position the leveling rod/ stadia at point d1 making sure that the rod is straight. Use a plumb
bob if possible to achieve the right position of the rod.
With the transit leveled at point 0, sight the upper and lower cross hair reading (a and b) and
record these data.
Transfer the leveling rod/stadia at the next point on the line and repeat the same process until
the last point had been sighted.
Tabulate all observed data accordingly.

III. MATERIALS/EQUIPMENTS
Transit
Stadia/Leveling Rod
Measuring Tape

VII. OBSERVATION
As I observed alwaysnot only in the activity but most of the problems have the
same mind-boggling in finding the stadia interval factor. This is because of every
proceeding ks, theres a pattern. Considering in the problem: 102.041 , 99.668,
99.751, 99.602, 98.361, 99.150 as k (123456) respectively, theres a fall-rise situation.
Observe k1 and k2, the value of k decreased. Observe k2 and k3, the value of k increased.
Observe k3 and k4, the value of k decreased again. I dont know what happened to k4-k5,
but almost of the problems I encountered, theres always a fall-rise relationship.
Another thing that I observed, the magnitude of k1 is always greater than to the
proceeding ks (k2,k3,k4,k5...kn) assuming that the line of sight is horizontal.
2
k1 > { 3 where n is a positive integer greater than 1.

VIII. CONCLUSION
Since the Stadia Interval Factor is the ratio of focal length of the lens to the distance
between stadia hair and must be close enough to 100 therefore the value should must not be too
large or else something error in the activity.
99.762 is acceptable.
