National PhD Awards/Scholarships/Fellowships

1. Gates Millennium Scholars Program

Application Deadlines: January 15, Annually
The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS), funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding African American, American
Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander Americans, and Hispanic American
students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education, in all
discipline areas and a graduate education for those students
2. Phi Delta Kappa International Graduate Fellowships in Educational Leadership
Deadline: June 1
One-time graduate fellowship for members of Phi Delta Kappa pursuing a degree in
educational leadership. Must have minimum 3.0 GPA. Ten fellowships are granted
annually. Award Amount $750-$1500.

3. National Academy of Education/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship Program

Deadline: Continuous
The fellowship program seeks to encourage a new generation of scholars from a wide
range of disciplines and professional fields to undertake research relevant to the
improvement of education. These fellowships support individuals who show potential for
bringing fresh and constructive perspectives to the history, theory, or practice of formal
or informal education. Award Amount $25,000.

4. Sylvia Taylor Johnson Minority Fellowship in Educational Measurement

Deadline: Feb. 1
An award to a minority scholar who has received a doctorate degree within the past ten
years. The fellow will conduct independent research under the mentorship of ETS
researchers. The award is for a period of up to two years, renewable after the first year by
mutual agreement. Applicant must have a commitment to education, particularly
educational measurement. Dollar value varies.

5. Washington State University: Summer Doctoral Fellows Program

Deadline: March 15
Fellowships provide a $3000 stipend and housing for graduate students who have
completed all requirements for a doctorate except dissertation at a U.S. university other
than Washington State University. Provides select doctoral students from diverse
backgrounds with the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors at WSU to
prepare for careers in higher education. Must be a U.S. citizen. Minimum 3.5 GPA
required.

6. Paul W. Rodgers Scholarship

Deadline: May 1
 Award given to any senior undergraduate, master's or doctoral student who wishes to
pursue a future in research, conservation, education, communication, management, or
other knowledge-based activity pertaining to the Great Lakes. Award Amount $2000.

7. American Association Of School Administrators

The American Association of School Administrators (AASA) funds the annual
Educational Administration Scholarships. There are seven of these $2,500 awards, and
they go to outstanding graduate students in the field of school administration who intend
to become school superintendents. Winners will be recognized at the groups National
Conference on Education and receive an extra $500 to cover travel expenses.

8. (AERA) Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research Award

Application Deadline: November
The Council of the AERA established the fellowship program to provide support for
doctoral dissertation research, to advance education research by outstanding minority
graduate students, and to improve the quality and diversity of university faculties. This
fellowship is targeted for members of racial and ethnic groups historically
underrepresented in higher. This program offers doctoral fellowships to enhance the
competitiveness of outstanding minority scholars for academic appointments at major
research universities. It supports fellows conducting education research and provides
mentoring and guidance toward the completion of their doctoral studies.

9. Harold Gulliksen Psychometric Research Fellowships

Application Deadline: December 1
During the academic year, selected fellows study at their universities and carry out
research under the supervision of an academic mentor and in consultation with an ETS
researcher or psychometrician. During the summer, fellows are invited to participate in
the Summer Internship Program in Research for Graduate Students, working under the
guidance of an ETS mentor.

UNC Charlotte Scholarships/Awards

10. Lake I. and Edward J. Snyder, Jr. Special Education Fellowship (UNC Charlotte)
The fellowship was established in 2005 and enables a full-time doctoral student to work
collaboratively with the Lake I. and Edward J. Snyder, Jr. Special Education
Distinguished Professor to conduct research of importance in the field of special
education. Fellowship complements Snyder Distinguished Professorship in Special
Education.

11. Legacy for Leadership Award (UNC Charlotte)

Established in 2008, the Legacy for Leadership Award recognizes outstanding academic
performance for a doctoral dissertation successfully defended during the previous
academic-year. This will be accomplished by annually awarding an Outstanding
Dissertation Award

12. Philip Morris Educational Leadership Doctoral Fellowship (UNC Charlotte)

 This fellowship was established in l991 by Philip Morris USA Inc. to provide financial
support for outstanding students in the Education Department's program in Educational
Leadership, by awarding graduate fellowships to distinguished full-time students.

13. Graduate School Tuition Scholarship (UNC Charlotte)

The Graduate School recently received approval for a new need-based Graduate School
Tuition Scholarship for doctoral, masters, and certificate students beginning with the
2015-16 academic year. The primary purpose of the program is to enhance the
recruitment and retention of our graduate students, particularly our part-time students. To
be considered, a student must be eligible to complete a FAFSA and have the completed
form on file with the University. No additional application is needed.

14. The Graduate Assistant Support Plan (GASP) (UNC Charlotte)

GASP is a highly competitive support package used to attract top graduate students to
UNC Charlotte. Under this plan, doctoral students supported on a teaching or research
assistantship, or a qualifying fellowship of at least $667.67 per month for 9 months, and
who meet the minimum registration requirements, receive fall and spring semester tuition
and health insurance. Each student is eligible for a certain, limited number of semesters.

Fully funded PhDs in Education (Nationally):

15. Boston College, Lynch School of Education (Boston, MA):

The Lynch School offers competitive full funding packages for full-time Ph.D. students
during their first three years of study through a combination of research and teaching
assistantships. Assistantships provide both critical training and funding packages that
include a monthly stipend, tuition remission, and individual health insurance coverage.

16. Drexel University, School of Education, PhD in Educational Leadership Development

and Learning Technologies (Philadelphia, PA):
This program will be limited to a cohort of full-time students for whom full funding is
available and who will be fully embraced as members of the School of Education.

17. Harvard University, Graduate School of Education, Doctor of Education

Leadership (Ed.L.D.):
All students in the Ed.L.D. Program receive a full tuition funding package, which also
includes stipend support in years one and two, as well as a paid residency in year three.

18. New York University, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human
Development (New York, NY):
The Steinhardt School offers all full-time Ph.D. students a complete funding and
mentoring program. All students offered admission to our Ph.D. programs are awarded a
full funding package and are assigned to a faculty mentor.
19. Stanford University, Graduate School of Education (Stanford, CA):
Students in the Ph.D. programs are automatically funded through a combination of
fellowships and assistantships for the first four years of their graduate studies. Funding is
contingent upon satisfactory progress toward the degree requirements.

20. University of Colorado, School of Education, PhD in Education (Boulder, CO):

Doctoral students admitted and attending the School will be provided with three years of
funding.

21. University of Michigan, School of Education (Ann Arbor, MI):

Nearly all School of Education doctoral students receive full funding to cover tuition,
fees, books, living expenses, and health insurance.

22. University of Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Education (Philadelphia, PA):

Students in Ph.D. programs generally receive multi-year financial packages to cover
tuition, fees, health insurance and a living allowance or stipend.

23. Vanderbilt Peabody College, College of Education and Human Development (Nashville,
TN): Students admitted to the program typically receive full tuition support, health
insurance, and graduate assistantships that cover living expenses. A significant proportion
of students also receive scholarships that increase their level of financial support.
