CASE : PREMATURE FAILURE OF FAG 24156B.531079 AT WRM


Application :
The concerned bearing was used in Stand#1,Bottom Drive,Drive end chock.
Basic stands to transform square CS pellets to Round CS wire WRM main floor Tata Steel.
Grease used : BECHEM HIGH LUB LT2 EP400.
Centralised Greasing System.
Load : Could not be assessed.
Speed : 0.173 to 0.178 m/s with Roll Dia. Of 538.3 mm
RPM should be approximately 9 to 11.
Drawing/Actual measurement details :
460.000 to 460.063 (ID of chock) for 500 Roll Housing(4 total bearings per stand)
Shaft measurement log unavailable.
Bearing Spec as per drawing : SKF 24156/C2 W33/235220, 280/460/180 // Carburised Inner ring and
Circumferential Grease Grooves.
Bearing applied : FAG 24156B.531079 [ COO : Germany] , RC:C2,Pressed brass retainer,Inner ring case
hardened,Helix on Bore : 20 deg angle,0.6mm depth,depth radius 6.35 mm
Bearing Radial clearance(post mounting) measured : 0.008 mm (27.04.2010)
Performance History :

Date of bearing application to site (in operation since) : 27.04.2010
Date of bearing failure : 17.03.2011
Failure mode (based on information from Customer)
Noted fatigue spalling at load zone of Outer ring raceway .Fracture initiated at outer ring ,which had
consequently resulted in disintegration of both rings .Fretting marks have been observed in outer ring raceway.

Photographs : Complete failed bearing not available .Only a few parts available .It was difficult to come to a
conclusion on the shape,size,nature(axial/circumferential) of primary crack /damage from these failed
portions.Kindly refer to the photographs enclosed.

Outer ring was found to exhibit slight fretting-corrosion on the outer surface. To the best of my knowledge,Fretting may be
caused by ingress of water and relative motion (slip) of outer rings with respect to the chock, resulting from loose fit in chock
bore.

Contamination is also at times responsible for failures.Discussion with Foremen at the WRM Roll shop unofficially through
questioning.Bearings may have contamination from mounting,according to them. Some contaminants include oxide scale /
particles which may go in the inner ring- roll journal interface and affect fit.

Faulty billet sizes may also be responsible for bearing overloading
