SECTION 4: 3G HDS Overview

Introduction

In this chapter, the function about 3G HDS(3rd generation HDS) is introduced. Moreover, the changing
points from 2G HDS (2nd generation HDS) and some note are introduced. Before you start to use 3G
HDS, please read this chapter.

 Chapter4: 3G HDS Overview

1. What is 3G HDS
1-1. Overview
3G HDS is the HDS version 3.001 or higher. It is based on 2G HDS and added some new
functions. Especially, it can link with MaRIS and service manual on server thru internet. This
new function improves the speed of your repair to save time to search information about the
failure and its repair. Moreover, it makes easy to operate HDS seeing service manual. See
service manual for vehicle application.

1-2. System component

The components of 3G HDS are below.
HDS software (v3.001 or higher)
PC
SPX-MVCI
Need to ready and set-up to use 3G HDS. For the details, see from chapter1 to chapter4.

1-3. New functions

New functions of 3G HDS are below.
Vehicle information search
DTC information search
Service manual linkage
Country information input
Sever selection
MVCI standalone CM Update mode

The details about each new functions are introduced in other content.

2. New function introduction

2-1. Vehicle Information Search

2-1-1. Overview
3G HDS transfer the retrieved vehicle information to Service Information Search Server.
Service Information Search Server will search information related with the vehicle, and
display the search result.

2-1-2. Assumption
When you use this search function, following conditions should be satisfied.
HDSv3.001 or higher is installed
PC installed HDS application connects to internet.
Correct server URL is set. NOTE: refer to 2-2 for the details.
Internet Explorer (I.E. ver.7 or higher) has been installed.

Service Information Search site is available, and you can log in to the server.

2-1-3. Screens
1) Confirm your environment satisfies all assumption in 2-1-2.
2) Connect HDS to the vehicle. See the Chapter4 Vehicle connection if you dont know how
to connect HDS to the vehicle.
3) Run HDS. Press New vehicle button.

4) Vehicle information input screen shall be displayed, and Network Explore (i.e. I.E.)
automatically waked up at the same time. Input the vehicle information, and log in to the
site.

NOTE:
If Network Explore (i.e. I.E.) was not automatically waked up, there shall be 2
reasons.
1. Your PC does not install Network Explore (i.e. I.E. ver.7 or higher).
2. Your service information search server URL is set as Non-Network (See 2-5).
If the Network Explore (i.e. I.E.) shows Network Explore (i.e. I.E.) cannot display the
webpage, confirm your PC connects to the network. Nextly, refer to 2-5-4. Change
server URL, confirm your current URL is correct URL. Finally, confirm your internet
environment (For example, your PC can see any webpage thru network).
The screen contents of Network Explore (i.e. I.E.) shall be different by each server.
Some countries may not use service information search server.
If you cannot log in to the server, there is a risk current server URL is not correct.
Refer to 2-5-4. Change server URL and set correct server URL.

5) Search result shall be displayed.

2-1-4. When you need not to use vehicle information search function
This search function can be canceled when you need not to connect network, or to see
service information.
Refer to 2-5-5, and change the server URL to Non-Network.

2-2. DTC Information Search

2-2-1. Overview
3G HDS transfer the retrieved DTC and vehicle information to Service Information
Search Server. Service Information Search Server will search information related with the
DTC, and display the search result.

2-2-2. Assumption
When you use this search function, following conditions should be satisfied.
HDSv3.001 or higher is installed
PC installed HDS application connects to internet.
Correct server URL is set. NOTE: refer to 2-5 for the details.
Network Explorer has been installed.
Service Information Search site is available, and you can log in to the server.

2-2-3. Screens
1) Confirm your environment satisfies all assumption in 2-2-2.
2) Connect HDS to the vehicle, and go ahead to the screen of whether DTCs/Freeze Data
nor All DTC test. Following figure is the example of DTCs/Freeze Data on PGM-FI system.

Need to log in to Service Information Search webpage when you want to use this
search function.
The window of network explore (i.e. I.E.) may be back of the window of HDS.
If Network Explore (i.e. I.E.) was not automatically waked up, there shall be 2 reason.
1. Your PC does not install Network Explore (i.e. I.E.).
2. Your service information search server URL is set as Non-Network (See 2-5).
If the Network Explore (i.e. I.E.) shows Network Explore (i.e. I.E.) cannot display the
webpage, confirm your PC connects to the network. Nextly, refer to 2-5-4. Change
server URL, confirm your current URL is correct URL. Finally, confirm your internet
environment (For example, your PC can see any webpage thru network).
The screen contents of Network Explore (i.e. I.E.) shall be different by each server.
Some countries may not use service information search server.
If you cannot log in to the server, there is a risk current server URL is not correct.
Refer to 2-5-4. Change server URL, set correct server URL.

3) HDS DTC screen shall be automatically refreshed, but the search result does not
automatically refresh itself. If you want to refresh the result, press Refresh button in HDS
screen.

2-2-4. When you need not to use DTC information Search

This search function can be canceled when you need not to connect network, or to see
service information.

Refer to 2-5-5, and change the server URL to Non-Network.

2-2-5. Default DTC Information

Network explore of DTC information search result shall be waked up when DTC screen is
displayed. Then, we can set whether DTC help screen of HDS shall be displayed in front of
DTC information search result nor DTC information search result shall be displayed in
from of DTC help screen of HDS.
1) Run HDS. Click F12 tab.

2) Select Default DTC Information.

When DTC Help is selected, DTC Help screen shall be displayed in front of DTC
information search result.
When Service Information is selected, DTC information search result shall be
displayed in front of HDS DTC help.
After you change the setting, close HDS. Then, the change shall be applied.

2-3. Service manual linkage

2-3-1. Overview
Service manual on server can run 3G HDS in your PC thru internet. For example, service
manual get sensor value using HDS, and run a function test.
For the details, see help or user guide for service manual.

2-4. Country information input

2-4-1. Overview
3G HDS deals with the country information of you. Using country information, it can
control whether this function shall be worked or not. It make better to use 3G HDS.

2-4-2. Setting of country information

When you install 3G HDS, country information shall be set.
The way how to set country information is depended on your selected market information.

1) CANADA, USA, JAPAN market is selected.

The country information shall be set automatically.
When CANADA market is selected, the country information shall be CANADA.
When JAPAN market is selected, the country information shall be JAPAN.
When USA market is selected, the country information shall be USA.
2) EUROPE, LAC, GENERAL market is selected
After you select market, the screen to select your country shall be displayed. Select your
country.
Then, 3G HDS will display some country name using the setting of Windows
When you can find out your country in screen, select it and press Next> button.

If you do not find out your country in the screen, select Other and press Next>
button. In next screen, all country names are listed. Please select your country in the
list.

2-4-3. Confirm the current country information

In the set-up menu, current country information is displayed.
1) Run HDS. Click F12 tab.

2) See Country. It is the current country information.

2-4-4. Change country information

It is necessary to install 3G HDS again when you change current country information.
After 3G HDS is removed, install it again.

2-5. Service Information Search Server URL

2-5-1. Overview
3G HDS connects to server thru internet. The server URL is different by each market and
country. Moreover, some market may not connect to the server because Service
Information search service does not started in the country or market. In this content, the
way to change the URL, setting and cancel.

2-5-2. Server URL

The market selected in installation shall decide the default server URL.

2-5-3. Confirm current Server URL

Current server URL is displayed in the HDS set-up screen.
1) Run HDS, and click F12 tab.

2) See Service Information Search Server URL. It is the current server URL.

2-5-4. Change server URL

1) Current server URL can be changed in HDS set-up screen. Display set-up screen
referring 2-2-3. Click the box of Service Information Search Server URL, then some URL
are displayed.

2) Select an URL.

Server URL which can be selected in set-up screen is different by each market.
Please see the following list.
NOTE: If you select LAC or GENERAL market, server URL which should be selected is
different by each country. See 4-1. The List of Service Information Search Server URL,
then find out your correct URL.

3) Press return button.

4) Press Exit button, then close HDS The setting has been changed.

2-5-5. When you need not to use Service Information Search function
If your PC needs not to connect to network or not to use service information search, you
shall be able to cancel this function.
1) Refer to 2-5-3, and display set-up screen. Click Service Information Search Server URL,
some URL are displayed.

2) Select Non-Network.

3) Refer to 2-5-4, and close HDS. The setting has been changed.

2-6. MVCI standalone CM Update mode

2-6-1. Overview
3G HDS and MVCI can include all of calibration files to MVCI SD memory inside. When

you receive the latest HDS software, after updating your MVCI once, you can update all
reprogrammable vehicles by only your MVCI.

2-6-2. Preparation
Turn on your MVCI by external power supply and connect the MVCI to your PC. Press
New vehicle button.
If your MVCI is not the latest, HDS will update your MVCI. If your MVCI has already
been the latest, this step will be skipped.

2-6-3. Procedure outline

Connect your MVCI to vehicle DLC.
Select CM Update mode on MVCI screen menu.
Update reprogrammable vehicle system.
Attention: On IMA system, a part of screen and procedure are different from other
systems.
Attention: Do not turn off the vehicle ignition switch. It will break damages on the vehicle
control modules.
After complete the reprogramming the vehicle control module, MVCI sounds beep to notify
the completion. Then, turn off the vehicle ignition switch and turn on again.
For detail procedure, please refer to MVCI CM Update User Manual.

2-6-4. Cannot use previous CM Update

Previous CM Update software cannot use the MVCI.

3. NOTE
3-1. Update from 2G HDS to 3G HDS
3G HDS shall be installed to the PC which has been already installed 2G HDS.
Please start to install 3G HDS referring the steps introduced in chapter2 Software
installation. Then, 2G HDS shall be removed automatically, and 3G HDS shall be
installed.

You cannot install both 3G HDS and 2G HDS in a PC. If you want to use 2G HDS, you
should remove 3G HDS and install 2G HDS.

3-2. Hardware support

3G HDS supports only SPX-MVCI. It does not support HIM, GDS3100, GDS2200,
GNA600 and Pocket tester. Moreover, see chapter4 Vehicle connection about 3pin DLC
and 5 pin DLC.

3-3. MaRIS server URL

When you select LAC or General market, you have to select correct URL because server

URL is different by each county. See 4-1. the List of MaRIS server URL by each country,
and select your correct URL.

4-2. Displaying a balloon icon for HDS

4-2-1. Overview
3G HDS connects to server thru internet. When internet connection is not available, a
balloon icon for HDS is displayed on the task tray as shown below. In this chapter, how to
handle with balloon is introduced.

4-2-2. Environmental conditions when a balloon is displayed.

Balloon is displayed in the following cases.
HDS is used when internet is unconnected. (Such as a driving test outside the field
and others.)
HDS is used under the environment necessary for authentication (a user ID and
password) to connect into the internet.

4-2-3. Instruction when a balloon is displayed

When a balloon is displayed, click the balloon or right-click the icon for HDS on the bottom
right corner of the screen to select Setting(s) and please show the setting screen.

If internet access is normally-off on your PC, please check Dont show this screen
again and click the OK button.
Temporary this screen is displayed
when internet is unconnected, but
please follow the similar procedure as
described.

When authentication is require,

please enter your user ID and
password then click the OK button.
Please contact your network
administrator to confirm your ID and
password.
