When Ms. Suria and Ms.

Iva first told our

class about the Homeroom project, we
were very excited. Many thoughts and ideas
were thrown about in class.

Where to start!
What do we
paint? Do we make it three dimensional? Do we cut
and paste? Question.. Question.. Question..

The class committee sat down to brainstorm. Every

one spoke excitedly at the same time.

We decided to choose the sun bear, pangolin and rhinoceros hornbill as our
endangered animals for the project.

The sun bear is the smallest one of the rarest of

all the bear species. The pangolin on the other
hand is unique because its the only mammal
that has scales. The rhinoceros hornbill is the
chief of birds in Sarawak.

Pangolins play very important roles in helping

to maintain reasonable ant and termite levels in various ecosystems. Without
them, the amount of insects could skyrocket, negatively affecting various other
organisms in their habitat, including humans. Both the hornbill and sun bear
loves to eat fruits. So, they help in dispersing seeds which allow new trees to
grow in the forest.

These animals are extinct due to habitat loss, hunting, poaching, population
expansion, logging and flourishing illegal wildlife trade.

Malaysian government has implemented endangered species laws to prevent

illegal hunting and to protect their habitat. They also rescue threatened animals
and help build rehabilitation centres. Other than this, organisations in Malaysia
create awareness campaigns through education initiatives in schools.
We spent three hours together every day after school for two weeks planning
and distributing work. We decided on a three dimensional art work.

In the beginning, it was kiosk. We spent more time laughing than working. We
bonded during these times. We were happy, with some even singing in class
while playing the guitar. At least there was entertainment!

We started to panic nearer the dateline. So much to do!

We first started to draw the pangolin. We began

by painstakingly pasting scales that were made
out of recycled CDs scale by scale. We also
painted the background, cut and paste tree
leaves and made the hornbill nest out of crushed
newspaper. Our bear had to have fur, beady
eyes and a 3D nose. It was lots of work.

In the end this project was a success as all our hard work and effort paid off. It is
unbelievable that we managed to complete the project on time. The journey
tightened our friendship. The best thing is we are proud of ourselves and happy
we won the secondary 2 homeroom project for year 2017 .
