muito semelhante nos dois gneros. A mdia
do peso corporal ligeiramente maior nos ido-
sos masculinos poderia determinar diferenas
entre os gneros, mas no sentido contrrio ao
verificado. A diferena da mdia das idades
entre os idosos de ambos os gneros de
4,382,76 anos, com mdia superior nos
idosos do gnero feminino, o que poderia en-
to explicar a diferena entre os gneros. No
gneros ou at ligeiramente maior no gnero
masculino. Provavelmente, estes resultados
devem-se ao facto de a mdia das alturas dos
homens ser superior mdia das alturas das
mulheres (diferena de cerca de 10 cm entre
os gneros; maior diferena encontrada nas
caractersticas basais entre idosos masculinos
e femininos). No entanto, a maior diferena
do permetro abdominal entre jovens adultos
e idosos no gnero feminino poderia ter mi-
metizado a maior deteriorao da funo
pulmonar encontrada no gnero feminino.
Esta diferena foi de 24,15 cm, contra 8, 22
cm no gnero masculino.

qual se efectuaram vrias comparaes pulmo-
nares entre idosos e adultos por pletismografia

influncia da idade na funo respiratria foi

Explanations and clarification given to the research subject
1. Justification and aims of the research/procedures used: Aging brings about morpho-
physiological changes in the organism as a whole. In association with a less healthy life-
style they heighten propensity to disease and increase the risk of death. Decline in lung
function is one of the earliest degenerative abnormalities to onset, caused by exposure to
environmental pollutants over the years.
The multiple lung morphology changes brought on by aging impact on the functioning
of the airway and the deep lung, and have a multifaceted affect on lung function. Knowl-
edge of these age-related changes aids in the detection and prevention of lung dysfunc-
tion in the elderly. Thus, based on these presuppositions, we will perform lung function
tests and expansion of the chest measurement to investigate/show the effect aging has on
the lung, by showing the changes brought to the several parameters evaluated (static and
dynamic volume and expansion of the chest). We aim to reach viable conclusions, so it
is necessary to manage certain variables which might otherwise distort the results, reason
for which we will use an anonymous questionnaire and measure abdominal girth.
2. Subjects will have permanent access to information on the researchs proceedings and
aims as well as the results of exams they have undergone, and clarification of any
doubts.
3. Subjects may withdraw their consent at any time and drop out of the study, with no
further repercussions.
4. Subjects are guaranteed full confidentiality of the results gleaned.
