This 3-track EP was originally released in 1993 on the Sub Rosa label (SR 064 CD)
after Michael Gira had remixed Warm Liquid Event, the opening track of the
‘Beautiful People Ltd’ album of 13 tracks released in 1992 (SR 061 CD). In 2004
the album was remastered and reissued on Atavistic (ALP153CD) with seven
extra tracks.

Of the 2004 reissue’s seven additional tracks, at least two are remixes of the
album’s first song Warm Liquid Event (3:10). The seven additions are: 14
Volcanic Ash Mix (5:24); 15 No Mix (4:42); 16 Warm Liquid Pleasure Mix (7:15);
17 Suicide Song Mix (5:11); 18 Badge of Courage Mix (4:53); 19 Unraveling
Thread Mix (5:17) and a hidden track 20 (5:17).

Number 20 turns out to be the same composition as number 14, the Volcanic
Ash Mix (5:24) of the song Volcano (5:20) which appears on the 1996 Swans
album ‘Soundtracks For The Blind.’ Discerning the differences between #14 and
#20 would require a specialist, but both the Volcanic Ash Mix and the hidden
Volcano have a slightly slower tempo and a longer instrumental intro.

This 1993 EP comprises the following mixes of Warm Liquid Event:

A potentially confusing situation is exacerbated by the fact that this version of
the No Mix (7:25) and the one on the 2004 album (4:42) are not identical.

Track one, Warm Liquid Event (Radio Mix) is a trippy pop ditty. The Radio Mix is
made distinctive by prominent samples of voices and laughter that enhance the
psychedelic feel of the original album track. Track two, Warm Liquid Remix,
resembles album track 16 in sound and structure: a blend of industrial
percussion, eruptions of muffled vocals and bursts of laughter, but more
restrained than the Pleasure Mix. In the last quarter the vocals become
dominant through a tempo and modal shift.

The album’s original 1993 No Mix has a texture formed by buoyant uptempo
percussion punctuated by the noise of an angle grinder alternating with
disembodied voices. The way the vocals come and go imbue the mix with a
dreamy quality. This heavy, shuddering No Mix EP track likewise moves in synch
with a vocal element, a background hum which waxes and wanes to its own
rules of rhythm. The No Mix suffers increasingly frequent blasts of distortion so
that the music seems to unravel towards the end.

The ‘Warm Liquid Event’ EP may be an obscure artifact, but it’s also a prophetic
seed in light of Jarboe’s future directions and fruitful collaborations with and
like inter alia Blackmouth, Byla, Neurosis, Cedric Victor, Attila Csihar, Kris Force,
Justin Broadrick and Veil of Thorns.
