Their Story (200 points) Due: 11/14 by midnight on BB

Skills: Building on the digital composing skills you learned working on your My Story, this
assignment requires you to conduct an interview and collect digital materials to edit someone
elses story about a place that is meaningful to them. You will use your communication and
editing skills.

Learning Objectives:
Identify and apply the elements of professional digital storytelling
Distinguish how digital stories circulate and their impact on cultures and communities
Produce high-quality audio and video stories designed to engage various audiences
Compare and contrast the benefits and constraints of audio/video stories and differentiate which
method to use for different digital stories
Create digital stories that are communally and culturally-driven
Goals: This assignment requires you communicate cross-culturally. You have to use your listening
and interviewing skills to successfully assist your assigned partner is telling her or his story about the
place(s) she or he is from. You will then have to collect digital artifacts (images, sounds, and/or videos)
to create a digital composition that shares your partners story with a wider UF audience. Successful
stories will be considered for publication with The Center for Digital Storytelling at UF and UF-TV.
Requirements:

1.) Contact your assigned partner and spend some time getting to know him or her, so that
you can adequately tell his or her story about a place that is meaningful. Remember, it
might take several meetings before you can create your story. Plan ahead!
2.) Complete the planning worksheet (attached below) for this assignment.
3.) Complete a storyboard/shot list. For assistance with storyboards, see the Resources page
on our course website for information.
4.) Complete a 4-5 page reflection that cites at least 5 theories or theorists we discussed in
the readings.
5.) Work to draft, edit, and compose an audio or video story that tells your partners story
about a place that is meaningful to him or her.
6.) Complete your video and/or audio piece and upload to either YouTube or SoundCloud.
Make sure to turn in your video/audio link, storyboard/script, and your reflection paper
by midnight on 11/14 via BB.

Grading Criteria:
___ Story Quality (60 points)
- The story is appropriate given the project parameters.
- The digitals images, video, and audio/text work together to tell a cohesive story.
- The story isnt generic you speak in specifics.
- The story has the quality of accessibility, it is identifiable and specific.
- The story shows rather than tells.
- The story appropriately connects to the goals and parameters of this project (see
above).
- The story addresses an appropriate audience.
___ Video/Image Quality (35 points)
- The video/images are edited appropriately to reflect the story told.
- The video/images work in conjunction with audio/text to tell the story.
- The video/images represent the story; in other words, they are not flashy for the sake of
being flashy.
- Video/images are cleanly edited and professional.
- Transitions are appropriate.
- Video/Images are cited appropriately in the digital story.
___Audio (35 points)
- The story includes appropriate audio that works in conjunction with video and imagery.
- Audio elements enhance the video/images to tell a story, neither detracts from the
other.
- Audio is cleanly edited and professional.
- Transitions are appropriate.
- Audio elements are cited correctly in the digital story.
___Reflection Paper (50 points)
- The reflection paper is 4-5 pages in length.
- The reflection paper cites at least 5 appropriate theories/theorists we discussed/read
about for class.
- The reflection paper considers the story-making process and shows that the student has
grasped the necessary technical and theoretical concepts necessary to be proficient in
digital storytelling.
- The reflection paper includes proper citation of sources and a Works Cited page.

Directions: Complete the following sections designed to help you prepare for the Their Story
assignment. DUE Thursday, 10/24 on BB.

Section One: Building on the experience gained in composing your My Story, write down a list
of at least 10 interview questions. Hint: Remember to ask about why a place is meaningful and
any sensory experiences (sight, sound, etc.) your partner associates with place.

Section Two: In this section, summarize your interview experience. Will you need a follow-up
interview? Why or why not? What stories or portions of the interview resonated with you and
why? Remember, honing your listening skills and working to understand and empathize with
your partners story will be the key to success with this assignment.

Section Three: Write down the digital media artifacts you will need to illustrate your story. For
example, you might create a shot/sound list here. Use this list to guide you as you collect the
pieces you will need to edit your story. i.e. Picture of steel mill, timelapse sunset, etc.
