CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

Language is a system of communication by sound with a manner of speech

and hearing, among human beings of a certain group or community. Language

important for all human beings in the world because it is a means of international

communication . People use the language to express their idea, feeling, and

emotion and it will not fluence without vocabulary.

Vocabulary is one of the language components, all about words in

language or special set of words you are trying to learn. The more words they

have the easier the communication in english. Words are basic units of language

form. Without sufficient vocabulary we can not communicate effectively or

express ideas. Having limited vocabulary is also a barrir that prevent the students

from learning a foreign language. If learners do not know how to expand their

vocabulary, they gradually lost interest in learning.

Bassed on the above statement, vocabulary has a very important role in

language to do communication. Because if we have lack of

vocabulary it can influence the learners motivation in mastering english

vocabulary.

1.2 Problem Statement

Based on the background statement , it can be identified some

problems:

1. the students difficulties understanding English language because

lack of vocabulary.

2. the students boring class activities.

3. the students difficulties using the english vocabulary in the

sentence

1.3 The Aim Of The Research

This research aims at proving the effectivenes of teaching english for

the junior high school through picture

1.4 The Significant Of The Research

The results of the research is expected to be usefull information as

a refrence for the english teachers in general and to solve the problem of students

difficulties in memorizing the meaning of word or vocabulary.

1.5 Scope Of The Reason

Vocabulary can be remembered by the learners if they know the

pronounciation, the meaning, and the spelling the words. In this case, the research

focused her teaching on the meaning of the words, and spelling.

THEORETICAL FROMWORK

2.1. Definition Of Vocabulary

As explained in the backround, vocabulary is a listing of all words that are

taught in the foreign language. Voacabulary refers to the words we must

understand to communicate effectively. because vocabulary has an important role

fo all language to mastering english as foreign language well. There are some

definition of vocabulary purposed by some experts.

Hornby (1995:1331) mentions his definition of vocabulary as the total

number of words in a language and vocabulary as a list of words with

their meanings.

Hatch and Brown (1995) as the term vocabulary refers to a list or set of

words for a paticular language or words that individual speakers of

language might use.

2.2 Vocabulary As A Language Component

Language components such as grammar, pronounciation, spelling, and

vocabulary link each other. One of them which is very crucial is vocabulary.

vocabulary is one of the most obvious components of language and one of the

first things applied linguists turned their attention to (richards, 2001:12). This

statement explains about the function of the vocabulary as the basic component of

language. Vocabulary carries meaning when people want to convey messages to

others. What people convet consist of symbol or signs that express their idea.

2.3 The Purpose Of Teacing Vocabulary Using Picture Cards

Generally as the beginner to understanding the sentence is not easy,

especially if the students lack of vocabulary, that is why to know the vocabulary

is strongly important to understand the language. The teacher who want to

develop the students vocabulary will use picture cards. The picture cards is one of

the technique in teaching vocabulary that helps them to memorize the words. This

technique is intended to make learning more intresting and enjoyable. Dory

(1966:1) states one of my strong belief about second language teaching is that the

whole proccess of teaching and learning should be fun.

2.4 Advantages Using Picture Cards

The are several advantages to improving the students vocabulary :

a.. the picture can motivate the students to learn vocabulary

b. picture will help students a lot in uderstanding and memorizing

voabulary

c. teaching vocabulary through pictures can improve students words.

RESEARCH METHOD

3.1 Research Design

In conducting this research, The research using true experimental research.

The samples of this research will devide into two groups, group A (experimental)

received the treatment, and grup B do not, but both of groups will give pre-test

and post-test.

3.2 Population And Sample

3.2.1 Population

Population is a group of people, things living in a country, city, or

area. According (Arikunto, 2002:108) population is the whole subject of

research.

3.2.2.Sample

A selection taken from a larger group, so that you can examine it to

find out something about the larger group and it is make the research easy

to conducted of research activities. Arikunto (2002:109) states jika kita

hanya meneliti sebagian dari populasi, maka penelitian tersebut disebut

penelitian sample. Sample adalah sebagian atau wakil populasi yang

diteliti. The sample of the research is the seventh grade students of junior

high school.

3.3 Research Variable

The variable in this research consisted of dependent and independent

variable.dependent variable the score achievement of the seventh grade students

of junior high school and independent variable is the use of picture cards.

3.4 Research Instrutment

This research using two kinds of instrument that is test and observation.

Observation just focus on observing the english teachers equipment, condition of

the class, and classroom activities.

3.5 Technique Of Data Collection

Technique of data collection is the way to get an accurate data supporting

the success of this research. The data of this research is collected through

observation and test. The formula that the writer used to obtain the individual

standard score as follows:


= 10 (Arikunto, 1985:240)

Where: = standard Score

X= raw score

N= maximum score

3.5.1 Test

Finding out how well something works. In terms of human beings,

tesing tells what level of knowledge or skill has been aquire. Brown

(2004:3) stated that is a test is a method of measuring a person ability

knowledge, or performance in a givrn domain. And according Huges

(2003) stated that is a test is a tool measure language proficiency of

students.

3.5.2 Pre-test

Pretest is given to the experimental and control groups before the

treatment. This is intended to know students mastery before getting the

teaching.

3.5.3 Post- Test

After givingthe sequences of treatment, the researcher give the

post-test to the students. The main of giving the post-test is to know the

final scores that showed how far the progress is made by students.

3.5.4 Treatment

The treatmen is given students by using cards in teaching

vocabulary. In teaching vocabulary by using picture card, it this some of

the tests as follow:

A. Teacher show on of the picture. For example picture of the rabbit

B. Ask the students to guess the english animal name of the picture .

If they difficulty to guess the name, the teacher helped them.

Using simple sentence like this:

It like carrot

It has ling ear

After the students have know the answer, teacher ask them how to

pronounce the word of the picture, if the the pronounce not correct, teacher will be

correct it and ask them to repeat the pronounce, it make the students easy to

memorize the word of the picture

After showing some cards, and students understood, teacher give evaluated

to know students ability about memorizing some words that had been learnt doing

some folliwing steps:

Teacher devide the students into several groups according to their seats:

Each group sent their representative to come in front of the clas

and take some cards to be fill by them.

She shuffle the cards then each students take five cards randomly.

Each students write the word of the picture on cards.

Students who answer most correctly is the winner.
