Dear Students

Herewith some notes to help you prepare for the examinations.

1. The course content is summarized in a mind map type diagram. The

numbers on the main branches refer to the relevant chapters in your text
book (Rhodes, 2nd ed).
2. Both exams will consist of 4 or 5 questions totaling 100 marks to be
covered in 3 hours. Each question will generally cover a specific theme of
the work.
3. In your exams, you will have theory questions (discuss briefly, show by
way of a diagram, etc.) that would not require solution of problems (or not
seriously so). These questions can come from any chapter.
4. Other questions will involve solution of problems (similar to what you have
encountered in your tutorials) and in this respect, chapters 1-4, 6-7 and 9-
11 are especially important.
5. Please familiarize yourselves thoroughly with the material in the tutorials
some exam questions would probably be very similar to some of your
tutorial problems. Also, Andreasen pipettes, cumulative sedimentation
scales and BET adsorption are not covered adequately in your textbook
(but is done so in the tutorials).
6. Also make sure that you are familiar with the symbols in the equations
heuristics sheet that you will get in the exams (see page 3 of this
document).
7. Please feel free to e-mail me, should you have any questions
(ca1@sun.ac.za).
8. I wish you all of the best in the exams!

Sincerely,

Chris Aldrich
