Rights vs Responsibilities
Worker Rights
The right to know the dangers in a
workplace
The right to participate in safety activities
in the workplace
The right to refuse unsafe work without
being fired or punished
Employer Rights
The right to determine whether the
employee can perform the requirements
of the job
The right to establish entitlements such as
sick leave, superannuation,
compensation, and other types of
insurance.
The right to identify any reasonable
adjustments are needed for the
recruitment process, workplace, or the
workers role.
Worker Responsibilities
Report hazards immediately to superiors
Follow safe work procedures and act
safely
Properly use provided safety equipment
If injured, get treatment immediately and
report to health care provider that the
injury was work related
Follow advice of health care providers
Never work under the influence of drugs,
alcohol, or any other substance, or if very
tired.
Employer Responsibilities
Establish a valid health and safety
program
Train employees to do their work safely
and provide adequate supervision
Fix problems reported by workers
Report injuries and submit necessary
forms to WorkSafeBC.
Reguarly inspect workplace to make sure
that everything is working properly
Provide supervisors with the support and
training to carry out health and safety
responsibilities.
