Specific Expectations
Variety of Texts 1.1 read a few different types of literary texts (e.g., pattern books, rhymes, books from
home, simple fiction stories), graphic texts (e.g., calendars, environmental print, signs), and informational
texts (e.g., morning messages, strategy charts, instructions, simple non-fiction books, labels).
Rationale for Use Within the Curriculum: Why is this App great? First of all, this app is a FREE
resource so that's fantastic. This is a great way to introduce young students to reading in a method that
slowly builds their skills and self-confidence. There are 15 mini-books, each focusing on a specific vowel,
along with videos and activities to enhance literacy learning. There is a good variety of reading resources,
games to play, songs to sing together, and videos to watch. This App is interactive and engaging so kids
just want to keep coming back!
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate
experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual
environments.
1a. Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness.

Rationale for Use Within the Curriculum: This app is a lot of fun for kids to use. Students are shown a
board (like tile 1 below). They must determine which two tiles equal the same number. Once they make
the matches, the tiles disappear (see tile 2 below) so the kids feel a sense of gratification as they make
progress. Students will even earn some cool tile designs (see tile 3) as they master each math concept so
they have incentive to keep playing. This app allows students to practice math facts in addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division so it will be useful through many grades.

-create short pieces consisting of sounds from a variety of traditional (e.g., tambourine, recorder, piano,
voice), electronic (e.g., keyboard), and non-traditional sound sources (e.g., water-filled glasses) (a)
-sing songs and play instruments, maintaining tone quality, pitch, rhythm, tempo, and dynamics; perform
the music expressively; and sing or play simple repeated patterns (ostinatos) with familiar songs, rounds,
partner songs, and harmonizing parts
Specific Expectations
C 1. Creating and Performing
C1.1 sing songs in unison and play simple accompaniments for music from a wide variety of diverse
cultures, styles, and historical periods (e.g., play a simple rhythmic ostinato on a drum or tambourine to
accompany singing; match pitches in echo singing.
Rationale for Use Within the Curriculum: Music is an important part of all every students life. This
app is a good one, particularly for younger children up to the age of 6 because it incorporates memory,
rhythm, dance, instruments and notes for a well-rounded introduction to music. This app allows students
to listen to notes, copy patterns that they hear and learn about rhythm while playing with instruments.
What I like about this app is that it begins to teach kids to read music at a young age so that they are not
apprehensive about learning to read music when they get to the older grades. Allowing students to interact
in a musical way, while using this app is an important first step to fostering their abilities in music and
sparking a love of music. Best of all, Duck Duck Moose has joined Khan Academy, a non-profit with a
mission to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere!

C1.Understanding Health Concepts
C1.1 Healthy Eating. Explain why people need food to have healthy bodies (e.g., food provides energy
for the healthy growth of teeth, skin, bones, muscles, and other body components)
Rationale for Use Within the Curriculum: Students are being faced with information at every turn.
Sometimes it is difficult to determine which information is factual and as a result, making choices can be
difficult. It is important to educate students about the importance of making healthy food choices. This
app is educates students about nutrition, snacks, meals and diet support. It is designed to make learning
about healthy food choices, fun. Students go on health food adventures with their furry friend as they
seek to collect good food and avoid the junk food. With each god food choice, comes the opportunity to
earn coins which can be used for character upgrades. This game allows students to identify which foods
are part of a healthy lifestyle. This is a valuable skill that they will need in order to support their growing
bodies and minds.
Grade: 1

Developing Ideas
1.2 generate ideas about a potential topic, using a variety of strategies and resources (e.g., ask questions
to identify personal experiences, prior knowledge, and information needs; brainstorm ideas with the
class).
Rationale for Use Within the Curriculum: This app provides a fun and interactive way for first graders
to learn early writing, reading, literacy and phonics skills. Students will gain exposure to alphabet sounds
(phonemes), rhyming words, themed words, spelling, proper letter formation, pincer-grip action, and a
keep sake scrapbook designed to remind players of word meanings. I like this app because it was
designed by a teacher so it touches on the necessary curriculum standards while ensuring that the
students learning experience is fun. All activities are carried out against a beach back drop with animated
menu options such as sailboats, sand pails, crabby clues and more. Some neat things to notice as kids
negotiate the learning activities are the wiggling shells, the multicultural castles, the bubble guide and
more! There is so much to see, do and hear while using this app, kids (and adults) will keep coming back
to this app!

problems in ways that leverage the power of technological methods to develop and test solutions.

Specific Expectations
Variety of Texts 1.1 read a few different types of literary texts (e.g., pattern books, rhymes, books from
home, simple fiction stories), graphic texts (e.g., calendars, environmental print, signs), and informational
texts (e.g., morning messages, strategy charts, instructions, simple non-fiction books, labels).
Rationale for Use Within the Curriculum: Learning a new language can present challenges for
anyone. I like this app because it not only teaches English Language Learners, vocabulary in the English
language but kids can play 9 fun games to practice their understanding of word meanings rather than
simply trying to memorize a list of commonly used words. This app uses positive reinforcement to keep
students motivated which is very important when they are learning a new language. It is curriculum based
and has been designed with Common Core Standards in mind. There is a hand-illustrated word library as
well as an audio-clip option for correct pronunciation. This app is designed with quests and challenges to
keep kids coming back again and again. This is an excellent choice for elementary English Language
Learners,

Specific Expectations
Variety of Texts 1.1 read a few different types of literary texts (e.g., pattern books, rhymes, books from
home, simple fiction stories), graphic texts (e.g., calendars, environmental print, signs), and informational
texts (e.g., morning messages, strategy charts, instructions, simple non-fiction books, labels).
Rationale for Use Within the Curriculum: This is a fantastic app for Students With Disabilities. Often
times, these students benefit from extra assistance in areas of communication to ensure that their
educational needs are being met. This app is an empowering assistive device for these students because it
teaches emotions and problem-solving techniques. The app focuses on identifying a variety of emotions
through facial expressions, body language, and written/spoken language, and suggests coping strategies to
deal with a range of social situations. This is of particular effectiveness if a teacher or classroom adult is
helping another student at the time of need. This allows them to take control of determining how to get
the specific help that they need and manage their behavior until further assistance is available. What is
even better is that this app is customizable so that students can add their own pictures and text to emotions
and coping techniques.
Title: Community Helpers Play & Learn: Educational App for Kids
Price: $1.99
Subject: Community Helpers, Social Studies
Curriculum Area: Social Studies
Specific Expectations
A3.2 Identify some of the significant people, places, and things in their life, including their life
in the community (e.g., people: parent, teacher, Elder, doctor; places: school, friends homes,
the library, parks or playgrounds, their place of worship; things: pets, culturally specific items in
their home, toys and comfort items), and describe their purpose or the role they have.
Rationale for Use Within the Curriculum: This is one of my favorite apps! I love to listen to the
excitement in students voices when they share their ideas about what they want to be when they grow up.
This always brings us to a discussion about the roles and responsibilities of people in our community.
Running Head: EDU 571 App Assignment 17
This app is really neat because it allows the students to interactively help the community helpers with
their daily tasks. This is a wonderful tool because in essence, the students are learning first-hand about
what each community helpers role is. This builds wonderful character traits such as curiosity, empathy
and collaboration. Learning all about others is a great way to build a classroom of creative and
collaborative critical thinkers with excellent communication skills. Phew! The 4 Cs of 21st Century
learning at their best!
