CLASSWORK ASSIGMENT : LESSON A

The following exercises should be completed in class with the instructors assistance :

1.What do we call the list of specific thecnical information that describes an engine?

This list bring certain information about the engine. Also, this describes the important features
of the engine.

2.The first two line of an engine specififications reads as follows:

Type 4 cycle wter cooled

N cylinders 8, V-block, OHV

Write out the full description base don the information given

- Type: The engine is a four-stroke cycle, wter-cooled engine.

- N cylinders: This is a 8 cylinder engine in V-block overthead valve type of engine.

3. What does the word bore mean in reference to an engine?

The word bore means the diameter of the cylinder.

4. The engine specification reads:

Bore 3.50

Write out what this means

First, is the mark that indicates the measurenment is in inches. Also, this specification
represents the diameter o the cylinder that is 3.50 inches.

First, the word stroke means the distance the piston moves in the cylinder. Adittion to this,
the specification represents that the piston of this engine moves 3.50 inches.

5. Look at figure 1. Write your answer in the space provided.

Figure 1.a. shows the piston in the top dead center position, the abbrevation for this TDC.
Figure 1b show the piston in the bottom dead center position; the abbrevation for this is BDC
in figure 1a:

(1) indicates the crankshat

(2) indicates the crankpin

(3) indicates the connecting rod

The space indicated by (4) is the boreor diameter.

The world stroke refers to the distance the piston moves from the bottom dead center
position (abbr. BDC) to the top dead center position (abbr. TDC).
The arrow at (5) indicates the stroke

The arrow at (6) indicates the bore

Figure 1c shows the cylinder that would be represented by the

.andof the engine cylinder. (7) indicates the diameter or the
bore, (8) represents the height or the stroke.

(9) is the formula for calculating the volume of a cylinder.

If we know the bore or the diameter of the cylinder, and the stroke or the height of the
cylinder, and we have the formula given, we can calculate the volumen or the displacement of
one cylinder. If we multiply the displacement of one cylinder by the number of cylinders the
engine has, we wil have the total volumen of the engine.

6. If a V-8 engine has a displacement of 320 cubics inches, each cylinder has a displacement of
40 cubis inches

7. Look at the picture 1. Fill in the blanks bellow.

The compression ratio an engine compares the volumen of the .when the piston
is in the bottom dead- center position.

If the compression ratio of this engine is 8.0:1, figure 1b shows the space represented by the
number , and figure 1.a shows the space represented by the..(the
volumen of the combustion chamber at TDC always equals 1 in the compression ratio).

8. If the firing order of a V-6 engine is 1-5-3-6-2-4,

Which cylinder receives ignition first? N 1

Which cylinder receives ignition last? N 4

Which cylinder receives ignition after cylinder number 4? None of them.

9. Does net horsepower refer to the theorical: horsepower or to the actual output?

Net horsepower refers to one method of measuring the actual, not theorical, output of work.

10. Horsepower is a unit of power but engines are also measured in torque.

Torque is a measure of turning force. An a automotive type engine delivers power in the form
of a crankshaft.

The torque or turning force of the crankshaft is measured in libras-feet.
