CHE4170 - Week 1, Lecture 1

2017 Project - EG

Key uses of MEG:

1. Antifreeze agent

2. Dehydrating agent

MEG Consumption dominated by Asia

CHE4170: 2016 7
Department of Chemical Engineering

Why do we need MEG production in

Australia / NZ?

What really happens to PET bottles in Australia?

CHE4170 - Week 1, Lecture 1

Australian Plastics
PET has the highest recycling rate

BUT
Domestic
Recycling
<15% !!

OFarrell, K, 2011, National Plastics Recycling Survey, publ. PACIA

CHE4170: 2016 9
Department of Chemical Engineering

70% of collected PET is exported

from Australia to China

Producing virgin PET in Australia will help

with recycling of PET in Australia.

To make PET we need MEG

CHE4170 - Week 1, Lecture 1

Plant Processing Objective

Design a MEG plant with a capacity of between

50 200 kta
Plant will operate 24/7 with 4 week s/d (every 2yrs)
Plant Availability 95% (excl. s/d)

1. Must meet the Polymer Grade Specification

2. Minimise the cost of production
3. Minimise the carbon footprint

CHE4170 - Week 1, Lecture 1

How do we make MEG?

Traditional route starts with Ethylene (which comes from steam cracking of ethane)

CHE4170: 2016 13
Department of Chemical Engineering

Two processes dominate EO route - A

DOW Meteor Process (similar to conventional)

CHE4170 - Week 1, Lecture 1

Two processes dominate EO route - B

Shell Omega Process

The advantage of Shell Omega is that it only produces MEG (no DEG or TEG)

CHE4170: 2016 15
Department of Chemical Engineering

Best technology for Australia/NZ

Sustainability Considerations

1. Market size

2. Feedstock availability

3. Inherent Safety

4. Process Economics

5. Environmental factors

6. Community acceptance

CHE4170: 2016 17
Department of Chemical Engineering

2. Ethane Availability ???

East coast NG resources

fast being depleted
( < 40% remaining)

Coal seam gas does not

contain ethane

West coast NG LNG

(without extracting
ethane)

Extraction from LNG

Cost of methanol & formaldehyde

Methanol price is strongly
correlated with the natural gas price

Cost of formaldehyde / tonne FA is

about 1.1 x cost of methanol

CHE4170: 2016 23
Department of Chemical Engineering

Redox Process

Advantages
1. Relatively simple process

Disadvantages
Depends also on market for co-product
Best suited to an oil refinery integration

The role of Hoadley Enterprises

Some locations do not have some of the feedstock

Hoadley Enterprises will import and store the following in

atmospheric storage tanks if not currently available

1. Ethylene Liquid
2. Methanol Liquid
3. Formaldehyde Liquid (30wt% or 37wt%)
Iso-butane in pressurised storage bullet at average
ambient temperature
* CO2 streams leave the Regererator Column saturated in water
