1.0 BASIC DESIGN DATA

1 Total Population Equivalent = 2580 PE

2 No. Of Sewage Pumping Station = 1 No
3 Average Flow Rate = 580.5 m3/day
24.188 m3/h
0.403 m3/min
0.007 m3/s
4 Peak Factor = 4.23

2.0 DESIGN OF INLET SCREEN CHAMBER & PRIMARY SCREEN CHAMBER FOR
ULTIMATE PHASE

Upon reaching the sewage treament plant, sewage flows to the primary screen prior to the pump
sump. The primary screening facilities consists of one mechanical screen and one manual screen as by
pass.
2.1 Finding total opening width in coarse screen

x = no. of bars
W = Channel width = 500
W' = Total channel width

W - (50 x 2) = 6x + 25(x + 1)
x = 12.10 bars
W' = 25 mm x ( x + 1 )
W' = 350 mm

Q = flow rate (m3/s)

S = area of orifice measured at outer section(m2)
g = acceleration due to gravity, 9.81m/s2
2 of 14
G:\04157\Cal\pumping station\[pump-sta.xls]calculation
h = head on the orifice measured from the upstream level of the liquid to the center of gravity of the
orifice (m)
Q = KS(2gh)1/2 K = 0.62

2.2.1 Finding h when Qavg

Qavg = 0.0067 m3/s
K = 0.62
S = 0.5 m(width)x 0.1 m(height)
Q = KS(2gh) 1/2

(2gh)1/2 = 0.2167
h = 0.0024 m
Thus, H2 = 0.0524 m

2.2.2 Finding h when Qpeak

Qpeak = 0.0285 m3/s
K = 0.62
S = 0.5 m(width)x 0.1 m(height)
Q = KS(2gh)1/2
(2gh)1/2 = 0.9178
h = 0.0429 m
Thus, H2 = 0.0929 m

2.3 Finding head loss, hL across screen

The formula for head loss across clean bar screen is:
hL = 1/0.7(Vft2/2g - Vapp2/2g) (Metcalf & Eddy, Eq. 6-1)
Vft = Q/(W'+H2) = Q/(W'x(H2+hL)) ..1
Vapp = Q/(W+H2) = Q/(Wx(H2+hL)) ..2
Substitute 1 & 2 into hL,
hL = Q2/0.7x2g(H2+hL)2)x(1/W'2 -1/W2)
hL(H2+hL)2) = Q2/13.73(1/W'2 -1/W2)

Given W = 0.5
W'= 0.350

1) At Qavg = 0.00672 m3/s

H2 = 0.0524 m
Solving the equation, hL = 0.05 m

2) At Qpeak = 0.0285 m3/s

H2 = 0.0929 m
Solving the equation, hL = 0.35 m

2.4 Calculation for flow velocities in primary screen chamber

Channel width,W= 0.5 m
Total opening width in screen, W'= 0.350 m

At Qave = 0.00672 H2 = 0.0524 hL = 0.05

At Qpeak = 0.0285 H2 = 0.0929 hL = 0.35

a) At Qavg,
Therefore, H0 = H2 + hL
H0= 0.1024 m
I) Approach velocity; Vapp = Qavg/(WxH0)
= 0.1312 m/s
(<=1.0m/s) (table 5.2 Developer Guidelines, PG 82)
II) Flow through velocity; Vft = Qavg/(W'xH0)
= 0.1875 m/s
3 of 14
G:\04157\Cal\pumping station\[pump-sta.xls]calculation
(<=1.0m/s) (table 5.2 Developer Guidelines, PG 82)

b) At Qpeak,
Therefore, H0 = H2 + hL
H0= 0.4429 m
I) Approach velocity; Vapp = Qpeak/(WxH0)
= 0.1285 m/s
(<=1.0m/s) (table 5.2 Developer Guidelines, PG 82)
II) Flow through velocity; Vft = Qpeak/(W'xH0)
= 0.1835 m/s
(<=1.0m/s) (table 5.2 Developer Guidelines, PG 82)

Conclusion
a) Therefore, 1 nos. of
0.5 m x 0.4429 m mech.coarse screen is adequate.

b) For manual screen, the effective area is 0.5 m x 0.4429 m = 0.2214666 m2

When 50% clogged, the area needed is 1.5 x 0.2214666 m2
= 0.3322 m2
Thus, the height of the static screen = 0.6644 m

2.5 CAPACITY OF SCREENINGS COLLECTION BIN

From the guideline design of sewage treatment works, (Volume IV). Quantity of screening collected from Primary Screen.

ADOPTED SPACING OF BAR = 25.00 mm

VOLUME OF SCREENINBG = 30.00 m3 / 1,000,000 m3 OF

Therefore provide One 1 unit of Collection Bin with dimension of 0.5m(L) x 0.5m(W) x 0.5m(D)

3.0 PUMP SUMP DESIGN FOR ULTIMATE PHASE ( 2,580 PE)

For Design of pump sum, there must be a minimum capacity between start and cut off level to give between 6 to 15 for start/stop
of pumping cycle per hour (time cycle). (Guidelines for developers,2nd edition, Jan 1998)

Allow for number of start/stop per hours = 10

The volume of pump sump required = Tq/4

Please take note that the minimum level of difference shall be 150mm

Hydraulic Retention Time

The maximum hydraulic retention time at average flow Qave , is 30 min (Guidelines for Developers,
