In this course, we will discuss the numerical procedures used for 1. Knowledge of UG
solving mathematical models originates from typical engineering mathematics
applications. Essentially, this course deals with how functions, 2. Elementary knowledge
derivatives, integrals, matrices and differential equations are of programming in any
evaluated as strings of numbers in the computer. We also expect the one language, such as
C++, FORTRAN,
students to write computer programs for several of the numerical
Python, Matlab
techniques covered in the course.
Text:
S. C. Chapra, and R. P. Canale, Numerical Methods for Engineers, McGraw Hill Edu. India Pvt. Ltd.
Indian Edition costs about INR450, it helps to have your own copy. Two (02) copies of the text are kept
in library reserve.

Tentative lecture-wise breakup is given in course_contents file
The course will include few tutorials on mathematical modeling and computer programming. Attendance
in these tutorials would be optional. We encourage you to contact the instructor in/outside the class and
especially during the office hours. You may also take appointment with the TAs for any course-related
discussions
Grade determination: You must secure 40% marks to pass this course
Home assignments will include small programming problems; knowledge of any one programming
language will be necessary to solve the assignments. Programming quiz will ask you to write small
programs in class within limited time. Programming practice would be essential to perform well in the
programming quizzes.
